Peru: Government Fully Supports Police in Mining Protests

Funerals are being held for four people killed by security forces during protests in the Apurimac region of southern Peru against alterations made to the regional plan for what could become the largest mining project in the country. These changes involve the elimination of a secure transportation system for the minerals and the addition of two processing plants, which residents feel will greatly increase environmental destruction. Despite five civilian deaths and injuries, government officials have condemned the protesters and expressed total support for the police and armed forces in the area.
