Transcript
00:00President Nicolás Maduro visited the municipality of Samora ahead of the coming elections that
00:15will take place next Sunday, 25th.
00:25U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted her official nomination as the Democratic
00:29Party's presidential candidate for the November election.
00:37And the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas denounced that the objective of Israel and
00:42the United States is to continue the genocide against the civilian Gazan population.
00:58Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:00My name is Belén de los Santos, I'm from the Tesoro studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:04We begin with the news.
01:05President Nicolás Maduro visited the municipality of Samora in the state of Miranda as part
01:10of the National People's Consultation 2024 to be held next Sunday, August 25th.
01:16During his visit to the state of Miranda, the Venezuelan president assured that the
01:19power of the country lies in the Venezuelan people, a reality that is expressed in the
01:24communal councils that today play an important role in the development of social and productive
01:30projects.
01:31In this regard, the Venezuelan head of state urged the population of the community to attend
01:35and participate in the People's Consultation next Sunday, August 25th.
01:41He also reiterated that he will support and finance the project chosen by each community
01:46according to their needs in order to repair the damage caused by the sanctions imposed
01:51by the U.S. government to the country.
01:59Now with the consultation this coming Sunday, August 25th, immediately approved, certified,
02:06the project approved by each circuit, biggity, the money has to come down right there.
02:12I have something that I have been thinking about, that I have been talking to Hector.
02:18I was talking with Celia, with Alfred Nazaret, and I told Prado the other day that I am looking
02:25for some money to finance 4,505 productive projects, nothing more than productive.
02:33We are healing wounds created by the criminal economic sanctions requested by the ultra-right
02:38and the fascist surnames.
02:40On Tuesday, a video call was leaked in which a Venezuelan influencer based in Argentina
02:45revealed how much he was paid to publish content on his social networks with the aim of reinforcing
02:51the idea of fraud promoted by the Venezuelan right wing.
02:55Let's see.
03:06Create content related to everything that is happening in Venezuela.
03:10The global price would be 400.
03:14It would be two videos in Instagram, two in TikTok, plus the 8 stories for these two weeks.
03:22I'm not going to be in Con el Más Fajando.
03:25It is necessary to emphasize on the minutes, on the kidnappings, and based on that, I prepare
03:32a content.
03:33I turn on the phone and say what is going on.
03:36Now, what happens is that I work in advance, and here in Buenos Aires, I can go to the
03:42spot and record right, interview the people.
03:48In this context, the government of Venezuela has denounced that the ultra-right has resorted
03:53to artists, YouTubers, and influencers in order to destabilize the country and establish
03:58a narrative that will be used as a platform for presidential elections on July 28th.
04:04In this sense, it is worth mentioning the recent statements made by the artist Puma
04:10RodrĂguez, who revealed he had been intimidated by the Venezuelan radical opposition with
04:15the purpose of influencing the electoral scenario.
04:24And the entrepreneurial sector in Venezuela is growing and driving the country's economy,
04:29which is reinventing itself to move forward.
04:32More details in the following story by our correspondent Gladys Casada.
04:37For almost two years, Gabriela has been occupying this busy corner of the Candelaria sector
04:43in downtown Caracas.
04:45In this four-meter by two-meter truck, her beauty truck Gabis, she placed two manicure
04:52chairs and a hairdresser's stand and set up on her own.
04:57From necessity, inventiveness was born.
05:04It took me a while to convince my husband of the idea, but in the end, I convinced him
05:13and he helped me to execute it.
05:20And to this day, he is the one who carries out the logistics part.
05:26Gabriela is part of a sector growing in Venezuela under the government.
05:31According to President Nicolás Maduro Moros, the national economy grew by 8% in the first
05:37semester of 2024, with an optimistic projection for the rest of the year.
05:43Part of this rising rate is the work of the entrepreneurs, who not only guarantee their
05:48personal economy, but also benefit others with employment and possibilities.
05:59Everything has been like a trial and error test, and it has been giving us little by
06:02little.
06:03I have seen a little economic growth in my family, in the girls who work here and well.
06:08Little by little we are getting things by saving, knowing how to manage.
06:19After I started working here, I began to have economic growth with the number of clients
06:23that come to me.
06:25I was able to raise enough money to buy my motorcycle, buy some things for my house.
06:31In addition to her 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, Gabriela has a degree
06:37in administration from the Francisco de Miranda University, and has added to her salon skills
06:43in digital marketing, social networks, and new communication trends.
06:49All of this, in addition to her perseverance, has earned her a stable base of clients.
06:55I have already been here for about a year and I started to enjoy the service of this
07:06cable truck because I was going to the supermarket one day to do my shopping with my sister.
07:17And I always found the place so beautiful that I didn't believe that a truck had been
07:20conditioned to provide a service to the lady made by a lady.
07:29As of August, 1,450,000 entrepreneurs are registered, while the authorities project
07:37that the figure will reach 3 or 4 million entrepreneurs.
07:41For this, credits and legal openings are available that allow those who have a dream, a talent
07:48or a skill to promote it and take it to the real world.
07:52Gabriela is already aspiring to great things.
07:56Well, the truth is that I would like to have a beauty truck Gaby at least in every parish
08:05in Caracas.
08:06That's my next project that I have here.
08:12In Venezuela you can do it.
08:13Yes, it is possible.
08:16Sometimes people come and see us and they are astonished.
08:18They tell me about the capacity of the Venezuelans to receive people.
08:22After I started working here, I started to have an economic growth.
08:27Venezuela looks inward and bets on its own if it is about improvement and growth.
08:33So that those who do for themselves, from their own entrepreneurship, small businesses
08:39and initiatives, do for everyone.

09:09Welcome back from the South.
09:16In the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday formally accepted her official
09:21nomination as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate for the November election.
09:26During a rally in the city of Milwaukee, held simultaneously with the second day of the
09:31convention being held in Chicago, Harris officially accepted the nomination.
09:36It should be recalled that Kamala Harris, 59, secured the Democratic nomination for
09:41president earlier this month when she won the support of 99% of the delegates at the
09:46virtual meeting of the Democratic National Committee.
09:51Delegates, please know how critical you are to this process, both now and earlier this
09:58month when we conducted our virtual roll call.
10:02I am thrilled to reaffirm Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president of the
10:08United States.
10:13This is not just about us versus Donald Trump.
10:16This is about two very different visions for our nation.
10:21One, ours focused on the future.
10:26The other focused on the past.
10:30In Wisconsin, we fight for the future.
10:35We fight for the future.
10:39And meanwhile, outside the Democratic convention in Chicago, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters
10:44clashed with police officers on Tuesday.
10:47During the clashes, American flags were seen burning while chants of free Palestine were
10:52chanted in front of the Israeli consulate located near the United Center site of the
10:57convention.
10:59Police attempted to break through a barrier of riot police in front of the building that
11:02houses the consulate, and several videos posted on networks showed how the officers responded
11:08using force.
11:09As the demonstrators drew to a close, several protesters were arrested by U.S. authorities,
11:15prompting dozens of demonstrators to charge a police line near the Israeli consulate.
11:29And Israel pursues dropping bombs on the Gaza Strip, evading a ceasefire and slaughtering
11:45at least 52 Palestinians in the last 24 hours.
11:48WAFA news agency revealed that at least one Gazan was killed during an Israeli airstrike
11:54on the house of the Al-Khatib family in the Javalia refugee camp.
11:59On Tuesday evening, the shelling left several people injured, including children.
12:03The attacks further killed 12 people in a school in Gaza and nine in a crowded market
12:09in Deir al-Bala, where about one million people have been displaced, and in the last hours,
12:16the occupation army issued new evacuation orders.
12:23And in this context, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas denounced that the objective
12:29of Israel and the United States is to continue the genocide against the civilian population
12:34of the Gaza Strip.
12:36The high official of the Palestinian movement, Osama Hamdan, said he agreed with the proposal
12:41presented by the U.S. President Joe Biden, but assured that they didn't manage to convince
12:46the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
12:49He also warned that the Israelis have left aside the important issues of the Washington
12:55plan and are not willing to accept it.
12:58On the other hand, Hamdan emphasized that any agreement must include five basic issues
13:02starting with the end of the aggression, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the reconstruction
13:07of the Gaza Strip.
13:14In this context, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that in the last 24 hours, 34 people
13:19have been killed and 114 others injured as a result of the Israeli occupation attacks.
13:25The occupation warplanes bombed the Mustafa Hafez School west of the city, which houses
13:31displaced people, living, nine dead and several wounded.
13:35Meanwhile, in the town of Deir al-Bala, in the central Gaza Strip, four civilians were
13:39killed by heavy IDF air and artillery strikes.
13:43The figures for casualties in the Gaza Strip are incomplete due to continued Israeli aggression,
13:49lack of fuel infrastructure being destroyed, and rubble, among other things, which undermine
13:55the work of the authorities in documenting the number of deaths and injuries.

14:38Welcome back to From the South.
14:45In the Chinese autonomous region of Shizang, previously known as Tibet, amid US accusations
14:51the population positively evaluates the government policies aimed at barring their access to
14:56basic infrastructure and services and preserving the region's cultural and religious values.
15:03From Shizang, Telesur collaborator Mauro Ramos offers more details on the matter.
15:09The Democratic Party has chosen Kamala Harris as running mate, Minnesota government team
15:13Walsh.
15:14The Democrat was a congressman for six terms since 2006 and is also known for his interest
15:19in China.
15:20Walsh was a member of the Congressional Executive Commission on China, a body that claims to
15:25monitor human rights in the Asian country.
15:27The Chinese government has repeatedly expressed strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the
15:32reports released by the commission.
15:34China also has just taken countermeasures on Congressman Jim McGovern, a member of the
15:38commission and a very close ally of Tim Walsh.
15:41Because of his actions meddling in China's internal affairs, McGovern will be banned
15:45from doing business or traveling to China.
15:47In recent years, Walsh and McGovern have focused on reporting alleged human rights abuses in
15:52Shizang, known as Tibet in the West.
15:55We were invited to be part of a delegation to visit Shizang firsthand.
15:58We spoke with peasants, teachers and monks from different cities in the autonomous region.
16:05As a Tibetan, I can mention two significant actions that the Communist Party of China
16:09took in Xi'an.
16:10Politically, the party freed millions of serfs, granting them freedom, economically.
16:15By 2019, all 74 impoverished counties in Tibet had been lifted out of poverty.
16:20Now, we are entering a phase of rural revitalization.
16:24May marked 73 years since the peaceful liberation of Shizang.
16:27At that time, aristocrats, local officials and high-ranking lamas in monasteries represented
16:32Only about 5% of the Tibetan population owned almost all of the region's wealth.
16:38The other 95% were feudal serfs and enslaved people.
16:42By 2019, 628,000 people had been lifted out of absolute poverty in the 74 counties mentioned
16:49by Yang Zong.
16:50Part of the policies focused on relocating families from places that are difficult to
16:54access and without base infrastructure or services.
16:58Tsiwang Pintso, a resident of Sige village was one of the relocated Tibetans.
17:03We come from a small village in Medij county, Nyingke.
17:08It used to take 5 or 6 days to walk from our village to the county town.
17:13Sometimes when we went to Bom county to buy things, we had to carry everything, whether
17:18big or small, on our backs.
17:20In our hometown, the most common means of transportation to cross the Yarlung Zangbo
17:25river was the iron rope.
17:27So, it was obviously difficult to send children to school and for the elderly to see the doctor.
17:33It is fair to say that our quality of life was low.
17:36With the help of the country and the government, we moved to our current home in 2003.
17:41In addition to the different commissions in the US Congress, Human Rights Watch is another
17:45US entity that negatively evaluates these policies in Sijang.
17:49In different reports the organization claims that the relocations were forced and that
17:53the Tibetan language and culture have been repressed, although the Sijang Autonomous
17:58Region has a bilingual education system in Mandarin and Tibetan.
18:02Wang Dui is a primary school teacher who talks about the education offered in schools in
18:06the region.
18:09We are committed to preserving and transmitting our culture.
18:14In our classes, each teacher incorporates this tradition into their classes, sharing
18:18knowledge with everyone.
18:21Whether it is about passing on tradition or learning about it, our goal is to pass
18:25this content on to our students so they can better preserve it in the future.
18:29Wang Dui has been teaching Tibetan for 24 years.
18:33He states that in addition to the language, the teaching of Tibetan calligraphy in schools
18:37is being increasingly prioritized.
18:40In the past, we did not have convenient transportation like today.
18:45The road we used to use to go to school was difficult to walk on.
18:49In the past, we needed ink and paper to practice Tibetan calligraphy, but we didn't have it,
18:53so we had to follow tradition and write on wooden tablets.
18:57But now students have good quality paper and ink.
19:00They are very lucky.
19:02Human Rights Watch also accuses China of restricting religious freedom in Sijang.
19:06Buddhism is one of the main religions practiced in China, along with Taoism, Islam, Catholicism
19:12and Protestantism.
19:14Although the state is secular, there are policies to support monasteries and monks due to the
19:18cultural and historical value of Tibetan Buddhism, which is the second-largest branch
19:22of this religion in the country.
19:24Dong Zhu, guide at the Changzhu Temple, explains these policies.
19:29The government takes care of our monks in various aspects, such as medical care and
19:34social security.
19:36For example, all temples in Xi'an, including Changyu Temple, offer a free annual medical
19:42check-up for monks.
19:44The check-up results are kept in the monks' personal records.
19:48Our temple's main source of income comes from our small tea shop and the sale of items
19:53such as butter lamps, barley lamps and cottas, all made by the temple itself.
19:59These sources of income are usually enough to support each monk.
20:03Barkhor Street and Chokhan Temple are in the center of the old city of Lhasa, the capital
20:07of Sijang.
20:08The temple is under state protection and became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2000.
20:14More than 90% of the population of Sijang is Tibetan Buddhist.
20:18The Chokhan Temple was built over 1,300 years ago, and the temple receives up to 80,000
20:24people a day on special dates for Tibetan Buddhism.
20:29With the country's strong support, transportation and economy here are relatively developed
20:35compared to before, and there are many more tourists and worshippers than before.
20:41As the internal staff of Yokong Temple, we monks, must maintain and protect this world
20:47cultural heritage, make our own efforts to pass it on to the next generation, and strengthen
20:53our research on religious knowledge.
21:00And in other news, in Iran, a bus carrying Shiite pilgrims from Pakistan to Iraq crashed
21:07on Tuesday evening claiming at least 28 lives.
21:11According to authorities, the vehicle got overturned and caught fire on the outskirts
21:15of the Taft city, where 51 pilgrims aboard.
21:19In addition to the 28 fatalities, another 23 were injured in the accident, 14 under
21:25serious health conditions.
21:27The Pakistani pilgrims were crossing over Iran to reach Karbala, Iraq, in order to attend
21:33the annual Arbain March, to mark the 40 days since the death of Imam Hussein, one of the
21:40most significant days for the Shiite Islam.
21:46Unfortunately, we report 28 deaths and 23 injured, a total of 51 casualties.
21:54The bus was carrying Pakistani pilgrims on their way from Pakistan to Iraq for Arbain
21:58rituals.
21:59It went off the road in Deshir county Taft city Yazd province due to lack of control
22:03of the vehicle driver, unfamiliarity with the road, high speed and technical problems.
22:11And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
