He is the choreographer who helped transform Natalie Portman into an obsessed, paranoid ballerina for the film "Black Swan" - before going on to marry her. After decades as the star of the New York City Ballet he has directed music videos, been the face of Yves Saint Laurent and started the modern dance company LA Dance Project.
But perhaps most impressively, at the age of 38 he is now the director of one of the world's most revered ballet companies, the Paris Opera Ballet. He speaks to Eve Jackson about its first season, the legacy of "Black Swan" and his plans for the future.
