Tony Rebel is a hero of 1990s reggae, along with other champions such as Luciano, Buju Banton and Garnett Silk, he has contributed to bringing back conscious lyrics and the legacy of the roots reggae dancehall scene in an extraordinary way. As a sing-jay the quality and solidity of his lyrics ensured he became an idol for 'ghetto sufferers'.
His texts reflected the concerns and hopes of the poor people with references to the prosody and the use of words from traditional Jamaican poetry by the great poet Louise Bennett, popularly known in Jamaica as Miss Lou.
Through his label Flames Tony also sought out talent and organised the Rebel Salute. This annual event celebrates his birthday in mid-January and has become one of the most anticipated concerts for roots reggae worldwide.
