HEBRON, WEST BANK — Hospital staff and the Palestinian Health Minister have protested a raid by Israeli forces on a West Bank hospital that left one Palestinian man dead. The Israeli Army has confirmed the raid in which commandos arrested Azzam al-Shalalda, who is accused of stabbing an Israeli settler in the West Bank two weeks ago.

Undercover Israeli forces arrived at the al-Ahly hospital in the West Bank city of Hebron at 3 a.m. on Thursday. The director of the hospital, Jehad Shawar, told Palestine radio that the commandos entered the hospital dressed in fake beards and keffiyeh scarves, and pushed a person pretending to be a pregnant woman in a wheelchair.

The commandos held hospital staff at gunpoint, then entered the hospital room of Azzam al-Shalalda. al-Shalalda's brother Bilal, who was asleep on a bed in the room at the time, says he was tied to the bed while they arrested al-Shalalda.

Hospital Director Shawar told the radio station that when al-Shalalda's cousin Abdallah exited the ensuite bathroom suddenly, the commandos shot him five times. He died at the scene.

"As his cousin exited the bathroom, which was inside the room, they fired five bullets, one bullet in the head, one in the chest and three in his body," Shawar said.

"They took Azzam and placed him in the wheelchair they brought the woman in and they exited the room preventing anyone from giving medical aid to the young man lying on the floor."

Israel's Shin Bet domestic security agency issued a statement after the raid, saying it "will not permit terror operatives to hide in any places of refuge."

al-Shalalda is accused of stabbing a settler in late October, near the West Bank settlement of Metzad. He was injured when the settler shot him as he escaped.
