NEW YORK — Former New York governor Eliot Spitzer is back in the headlines after being accused of choking a 25-year-old woman.
Inside Edition reports that the woman, Russian-born Svetlana Travis, is believed to have used the name Svetlana Z to write a 2014 article detailing her life as a high-class escort.
On Saturday night, cops responding to a 911 call found her inside a room in the Plaza Hotel with Spitzer. She was taken to the hospital for a cut to her forearm, where she told doctors and later police that Spitzer had choked her.
Spitzer resigned as governor of New York in 2008 after he was revealed to be a client of a high-class prostitution ring.
The disgraced governor's camp denied the allegations and gave a different version of events, reports the New York Times.
According to Spitzer's lawyer Adam Kaufmann, Travis apologized via email after admitting she made up the attack to avoid being institutionalized.
She had invited Spitzer to her hotel room on Saturday where the two talked for less than an hour. Spitzer left the hotel but received a call from her hours later asking him to return.
He found her distraught and suicidal and attempted to calm her down. She cut her arm and called 911, but attempted to cancel the call for fear of being locked up in a mental ward.
Travis left the hospital on Sunday and is currently back in Russia. The incident is still under investigation by both the New York Police Department and the district attorney's office.
