N-word discussion sees Texas teacher talk her way into trouble

ROCKWALL, TEXAS — A Texas teacher has been placed on administrative leave for giving an unscheduled lesson on the N-word.

Social studies teacher Rebekah Cook did not seek prior approval for the exercise, according to Utley Middle School in Rockwall, KTVT reported.

The Civil Rights movement lesson was intended to provoke discussion on the use of the racially derogatory term, the school said in a statement. However, the school said the lesson was not part of the curriculum, and offensive words had no place in the classroom.

A Chicago Reader article from 1997 titled "The N-Word and how to use it", was handed out to the class.

In the article, author Bennie M. Currie recalls how he once casually called a white college roommate the N-word. Currie, who is black, wrote that an altercation between the two men took place and led to his reassessment of his use of the N-word.

The school district did not reveal how long Cook had been placed on leave, or if she was still getting paid, the New York Daily News reported.
