MILWAUKEE — A 26-year-old woman driving down a highway was shot and killed when a child in the backseat got a hold of a gun and discharged the firearm, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

According to WDJT, the vehicle was traveling in the southbound lanes of Highway 175 near Vliet Street on Tuesday morning. Police responded at about 10:30 a.m. to a call about a subject who had been shot in a car on the highway.

Deputies found that the female driver sustained a gunshot wound, did not have a pulse and was not breathing. They administered CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Initial witness accounts indicate that a child in the back seat of the vehicle got ahold of a gun and discharged the firearm, sending a single bullet into the driver's back," the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
