MARKSVILLE, LOUISIANA — Two Louisiana law enforcement officers were arrested and charged with murder on Friday in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy in Marksville.
Derrick Stafford, 32, and Norris Greenhouse, 23, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, Louisiana State Police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said.
Jeremy Mardis, 6, was killed while sitting in the front seat while his father Chris Few was critically wounded behind the wheel after shots were fired into the vehicle at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in Marksville, after what authorities described as a pursuit.
Edmonson said body camera footage from a third officer who arrived on scene helped lead to the arrests. That officer told investigators Few was not acting in a threatening manner toward police, CBS News reported.
Edmonson said there was no exchange of gunfire, and no gun was found in Few's vehicle.
Initially there was a report that Few had a warrant out for his arrest, which now has turned out to be false.
Edmonson said at first the two officers claimed that Few tried to reverse his vehicle and ram into one of their police cars. The damage to the police car that was hit reportedly appears minor.
The two officers fired a total of 18 shots at the father and son.
The Avoyelles Parish coroner said Mardis was shot five times in the head and chest.
The two officers arrested normally work for the Marksville city police department, but on the night of the shooting were working for the city marshal's office.
