ZION, ILLINOIS — A man carrying an Airsoft BB gun and wearing a homemade tactical vest was shot dead on Wednesday morning after leading police officers on a brief chase through quiet, suburban Illinois streets.
Zion, Illinois police responded to a report that a suspicious white male was taking photos of two local schools — New Tech High and Lakeview Elementary — at around 8:30 a.m.
According to ABC News affiliate WLS-TV, the 38-year-old man led police on a chase from the schools and to the 2000 block of Ezekiel Avenue. He fled to an alley where a struggle ensued between him and two officers. Police told the Chicago Tribune that during the physical altercation in the alley, officers tried to use a stun gun but it didn't work because of winter clothing.
The suspect was shot at some point during the fight and taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have released little information about the shooting and have not said how many shots were fired. One witness interviewed by Fox 32 Chicago said her neighbor had heard three shots fired.
Fox 32 Chicago reports that according to police, the man appeared to be carrying a handgun but it was in fact "probably" an Airsoft gun. The bulletproof vest the suspect was wearing was handmade with metal plates inserted into the vest itself.
Schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown following the incident.
