ROGERSVILLE, TENNESSEE — A 9-year-old girl's kidnapping last week in Rogersville, Tennessee sparked an extensive, week-long search for the girl and her kidnapper. Two men found the missing girl on Thursday and held the uncle accused of kidnapping her at gunpoint until police arrived.
Tennessee authorities began searching for Carlie Marie Trent after her uncle, Gary Simpson, pulled her out of class last Wednesday without permission. The pair was last seen driving away in Simpson's white 2002 Dodge Conversion van that had a Tennessee license plate, chipped paint and a stripe down the middle.
Shortly after Trent went missing, the two stopped at a Save-A-Lot grocery store and picked up a several items, including men's clothes, lipstick and girls' underwear. Based on surveillance video showing the two shopping for supplies, police issued a public call to check remote areas and campgrounds for the pair, reported NBC News.
Two men, acting on law enforcement appeals to look around isolated areas, were searching a rural property when they stumbled upon Trent and Simpson. One of the men held Simpson at gunpoint while the other went to call the police.
According to WRAL News, there was no indication that Trent was harmed in any way. However, she has been taken to a local hospital for a checkup as a precaution.
Officials believe a custody battle between her father and her uncle may have led to her abduction.
