People leave flowers at memorial for slain officers
Flowers, notes at DC memorial honor officers killed in Texas
WASHINGTON (AP) — People have started to leave flowers and notes at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington in memory of five police officers fatally shot during a Dallas protest.
The memorial, which was dedicated in 1991, is the nation's monument to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Carved into its curving marble walls are the names of more than 20,000 officers who have died in the line of duty throughout the nation's history.
Authorities have identified two of the officers killed Thursday in Dallas as Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson and police officer Patrick Zamarripa.
Before he died, the suspect in the shooting, Micah Xavier Johnson, allegedly told negotiators he was upset about recent police shootings and wanted to kill white people, particularly white officers.
