A seven-year-old girl visiting Morocco’s Rabat Zoo was killed after one of the elephants launched a stone, and it hit her in the head.
Zoos provide an opportunity to see a variety of animals, but a recent fatality adds to a growing list of child-related incidents.
According to the Washington Post, the latest victim is a seven-year-old girl who was visiting Morocco’s Rabat Zoo on July 26th when she was hit in the head with a stone launched by one of the elephants.
She died hours later at a nearby hospital.
The zoo has since expressed its sympathy to the girl’s family.
But Morocco World News is reporting that zoo officials don’t believe the facility’s enclosure is a problem, instead calling the accident “rare, unforeseeable, and unusual.”
An elephant expert has told the BBC that the animal was likely not “directly targeting the girl - but exhibiting frustration.”
The case is still being investigated.
