A male lion at the Indianapolis Zoo has died after sustaining injuries from a fight with the mother of three of his cubs.
In a Facebook post Friday, the park wrote: "Our Zoo family is sad to announce that 10-yr-old male African lion Nyack has died. Earlier this week he was injured during a physical incident with female lion Zuri."
The facility had also released a statement revealing that the confrontation occurred in early Monday morning, saying, "Zoo personnel made every effort to separate the lions, but Zuri held Nyack by the neck until he stopped moving."
The cause of the fight appears to be unknown, as staffers have indicated that there were no notable incidents between the two in the time leading up to the fight, reports USA Today.
The pair had lived in the same area for eight years and produced their three offspring in 2015.
The zoo says the mother and cubs are "all ok" while Nyack "will be greatly missed."
It promises to "conduct a thorough review to attempt to understand what may have led to [his death]."
