It's true that on a global basis many more films are released these days, but GWTW didn't get to play markets such as China, India and the Soviet Union on its original release so the two eras are not directly comparable. If you consider the US marketplace specifically:
1939: 761 feature film releases (388 major features by the studios, 373 independents)
2011: 602 features (189 films by the major studios, the rest independent)
Coupled with the fact that the number of screens has doubled in that period there is no doubt the 1930s was more competitive than the modern marketplace. I don't think there is really much debate in it.
