Study Documents Rare Sexual Behavior Between A Monkey And Deer

A new study documents the rare sexual behavior a male Japanese macaque displayed towards a female sika deer in Japan.

Mating between animals of completely different species is believed to be extremely rare with the first scientifically documented incident involving a seal and penguin reported in 2014.
An international team of researchers has now described another case in a new paper about sexual relations between a male Japanese macaque and a female sika deer in Japan.
According to a news release about the study, this activity was filmed by one of the authors, Alexandre Bonnefoy, in November 2015 during the monkeys’ mating season.
He is quoted as saying, “The male mounted the deer and displayed some copulation behaviors, which included about 15 sexual movements over a period of 10 seconds, before dismounting.”
And while researchers believe ejaculation occurred, they don’t think there was penetration due to his positioning on her body.
The study hypothesizes that this case could be the result of mate deprivation where males lack adequate access to females.
