Since 1988, fewer parents have been using spanking and hitting methods to discipline their children. Research has shown that mother’s who use spanking decreased from 46 percent to 21 percent. More parents are using time outs as their method of disciplining. Rebecca Ryan, a lead researcher, stated, “Parents seem to be using more reasoning and nonphysical discipline strategies with children, which is in line with what American Academy of Pediatrics recommended in 1998.”
