CHICAGO — Two girls, aged 11 and 12, were shot in separate incidents in Chicago on Saturday night.
Kanari Gentry-Bowers, 12, was playing with her friends in a playground at around 7:15 p.m when the children heard gunshots, ABC affiliate WLS reported. The children immediately scattered and fled in different directions.
While Kanari was running for safety, a bullet struck her. Initial reports said the girl was hit in the head. However, Kanari’s family clarified on Sunday that she was shot in the right side of her neck and the bullet shattered her spine.
In a separate incident about 30 minutes later, 11-year-old Takiya Holmes was shot in the parking lot of a dry cleaning shop.
The young girl was sitting in the back seat of a minivan with her 3-year-old brother, mother and aunt. Takiya’s mother heard gunshots and told everyone to get down, but the young girl didn’t have time to react and was hit in the head by a bullet, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
No arrests have been made in relation to either incident. The two girls are both in critical condition in the hospital. They were among at least 21 people shot in Chicago over the weekend.
