Having fired what is said to be his farthest-reaching missile, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un says he is pursuing his nuclear goals with the aim of achieving an “equilibrium” of military force with the United States,

“Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the U.S. and make the U.S. rulers dare not talk about military option,“ he was quoted as saying by the state news agency, KCNA.

The latest launch over Japan comes as Pyongyang accelerates a weapons programme designed to give it the ability to target the US with a nuclear-tipped missile.

North Korea staged its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test earlier this month

Meeting in emergency session on Friday, the UN Security Council condemned the firing of the missile on Friday as “highly provocative” although no new sanctions were imposed.

As the US loses patience, fellow Council member Russia urged caution.

“We were discussing for a while that we are really in a vicious circle,” said Moscow’s UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.

“We have a resolution, a provocation, a provocation, a resolution and then another provocation and we were contemplating, many people raised an issue, that we have to think maybe out of the box at a certain point.”

China, too, rejects Donald Trump’s tough talk, urging dialogue and negotiation.

But the US President says he is “more confident than ever that our options in addressing this threat are both effective and overwhelming.”

In the meantime, Pyongyang continues its military advance.
