Germany's main administrative court has ruled that cities in the country can ban some diesel cars in an effort to protect citizens from harmful emissions.
The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig said Tuesday that the heavily polluted cities of Stuttgart and Dusseldorf can gradually implement the ban on older diesel vehicles.
The move may trigger other cities and even some countries across Europe to take similar action as they struggle to meet EU air quality standards.
However, it's bitter news for German car giants Daimler, BMW, and especially Volkswagen, which has already seen a drop in their diesel vehicle sales amid the firm's emissions cheating scandal.
