NAZARETH IN GALILEE - Some Seed Fell on Good Ground

The heart of Israel's northern, farming, region --
Galilee is a land of rolling hills and fertile valleys.

I always feel King David was thinking about the Galilee when he wrote Psalm 121

SONG (Psalm 121) I will lift up my eyes to the hills

It was here -- in the simple Galilean village of Nazareth,
that Jesus grew to manhood.

Perched high on a hill, Nazareth is just a small farming community -- so small it is not even mentioned in the registers of our time.

Arieh: Nazareth, very small fields, I would say hardly several hundred, hardly.

If a man is greatly blessed, the farm he inherits is close to his home.

But for most of us, our farms are spread out in small plots of lands
scattered across the valleys and terraces
all around the village.

While the men work out in the fields,
the children play in the village streets, or out on the terraces.

Synch Boy: Growing up in a village is a beautiful thing, as little kids we used to play around in the village, you know, all sorts of games, like David against Goliath or other heroes from the bible, when we weren't studying with the Rabbi we would just spend some time out in the fields, in the terrace, or we will do other things like children do.

Yeshua spent much of His time closely observing the life of the village.

Becoming strong and filled with wisdom, these experiences provided the fertile ground from which His own teachings would grow.

For instance -- Jesus saw how, during planting, we plough our fields twice -- once before we sow, and once after.

We do this to make sure that the seed gets to a good depth in the soil.
As He later taught us ...
Some seed fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth ...
and when the sun was up it was scorched ....
... some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it
But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop...
some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred. (Mark 4:1-9)

Talk of a hundred-fold increase rang truly miraculous in our ears,
Proof of the promise of the kingdom of heaven.

Once planting is finished,
all that's left is to hope for good rains throughout the winter ----
and that the village sheep and cattle don't find their way into our fields.
