Volkswagen drives fullyautomated

In 2005, Volkswagen already won the Grand Challenge in the USA – a race for automated vehicles over a distance of 220 kilometers – with the first-generation Touareg. The prototype, named “Stanley”, had been developed by the Volkswagen Group’s Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL) in Palo Alto, California, and Stanford University. Since then, rapid progress has been made with the development of automated driving. All the studies of the future I.D. family shown to date – the I.D., I.D. BUZZ. I.D. CROZZ and I.D. VIZZION – can be driven in fully automated mode. Depending on the legal conditions, the first vehicles with a fully automated driving mode could be launched in the second half of the next decade.
