The food in Beijing, China’s capital, is rich in wheat and heavy on the meat.

Here, street food was once actually sold on the street, but in recent years, the government has been cracking down on curbside vendors, citing food safety and cleanliness issues.

Now, most street food can be found in tidy food courts that largely cater to tourists. But that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of good eats. We went and picked the five best dishes.

00:10the region is arid, so the food is rich in wheat-based carbs
00:13and is heavy on the meat.

00:21on curbside vendors, citing food safety and cleanliness issues.

00:29like these that mostly cater to tourists.
00:33But you can still find good eats here.
00:34We went to Beijing’s Nanluoguxiang
00:37and picked out the five best dishes.
00:47Beijing’s roast duck is iconic, but it can be quite pricey,
00:50especially if you go to a sit-down restaurant.
00:54This street vendor serves it in a wheat wrap
00:56that’s affordable and can be eaten on the go.
01:16Noodles are king in Beijing,
01:18where wheat, not rice, is the carb of choice.
01:21And these cold noodles are a classic summer dish.
01:40This savory crepe comes from the city of Tianjin,
01:43about an hour’s drive outside of Beijing.
02:11Barbecued squid is a favorite in this food court,
02:13and it’s doused with a spicy chili sauce.
02:30In the age of Instagram, trendy means photogenic,
02:32and these red bean cakes definitely fit the bill.
