The Indian constitution is both the creation of the Indian people through their representatives in the constituent assembly but it has also, in turn, moulded the Indian people into democratic citizens and, in that sense, it has created them. As the constitution approaches its 70th anniversary on the 26th of January, this is a key insight into the relationship between the constitution and the Indian people. This point was explained by Prof. Madhav Khosla in an interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire to mark the recent launch of his book on the Indian constitution ‘India’s Founding Moment: The Constitution of a Most Surprising Democracy’.
