In 2010, he became the first in the region to receive the prestigious Forbes Asia Businessman of the Year award. In recognition of his contributions to the growth of Asia, he received the Nikkei Asia Prize in Tokyo. He was also conferred the 'CAPA Legend Award 2009 (Aviation Hall of Fame)' for his influence on the aviation industry, and was the recipient of the 'Airline CEO of the Year Award for 2009' from Jane's Transport Finance for growing AirAsia into a leading low-cost airline.
