00:00Capital A Burhat CEO Tanshri Tony Fernandes said Asia has the potential to be a dominant
00:07force in the next 50 years, as he shared his confidence in the capabilities of the region,
00:12especially ASEAN.
00:14He was speaking during a special address at the Asia News Network Summit 2024, Future
00:19of Asia, where he brought forward the concept of a New Asia.
00:24New Asia has been used to refer to various concepts, from a geopolitical vision to a
00:29marketing slogan, and it does not describe any officially recognised sovereign state
00:35or political union in Asia.
00:37So, I'm a big believer in ASEAN, I know this is a new Asia, but I think ASEAN is going
00:42to be a very big part of Asia.
00:45I'm trying to encourage.
00:47My big goal, ASEAN has not done enough, it's been great as keeping peace, but economically
00:55it can do much more.
00:56I hope there's more collaboration in this New Asia.
01:01I hope that we work closer together and create one plus one equals three.
01:06Fernandes also highlighted the loss of talent to Singapore and the Middle East, but he added
01:11that there is a need for everyone to work on building a strong loyalty.
01:15Talent I think is the future of New Asia.
01:18How we harness it, how we develop it, how we encourage it, and how we nurture it going
01:24forward.
01:25I think there's a difference between great economies and ordinary economies.
01:29Number one is people.
01:32And I think we have work to do there, I really think we have work to do there, but we're
01:36moving in the right direction.
01:38On another note, Fernandes said the media also play an important role in developing
01:42an economy, and he hoped for more press freedom in the near future.
01:46You guys have a massive job to tell the story of what the New Asia could be.
01:55I am 100 percent, I have never shied away from saying the press in Malaysia has played
02:00an enormous part in telling the truth, in telling the story, and getting it going.
02:06I hope for more press freedom, I think it's critical for the development of Asia, I think
02:13that the press plays a huge, huge part in a developing economy.
