The neck-and-neck fight in the coveted Nandigram assembly constituency finally ended late Sunday night with BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari defeating Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee by 1956 votes.

"My sincere thanks to the great people of Nandigram for their love, trust, blessings, and support, and for choosing me as their representative and the MLA from Nandigram. It is my never-ending commitment to be of service to them and working for their welfare. I am truly grateful," he tweeted.

The electoral battle in Nandigram was arguably the most coveted of all electoral battles in West Bengal this time. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee moved from her traditional Bhabanipur seat to Nandigram, where she was challenged by her former close aide Suvendu Adhikari, who is a local and BJP candidate from the seat.
