Jim and Saab on Stalkers, Cheaters, and their Malibag Podcast

Admit it or not, we know there's something about discussing other people's problems live on air that just captures your attention. Even Jim Bacarro and Saab Magalona know it. Their podcast section, "Malibag"—a misspelling of mailbag, where listeners send in their problems—is as juicy as it gets.

We talk to the Wake Up With Jim and Saab hosts about why Pinoys are so obsessed with this format. Plus tips on starting your own podcast!

00:00Oh my god!
00:01Nakakatakot yan!
00:03Etong April lang, nag-message:
00:03Don't look inside your closet now
00:06tapos may wink.
00:12Yuny Malibag started kasi
00:15when we were doing the podcast
00:16The mailbag is something that's very interesting
00:19like having people send letters
00:22and then I accidently typed
00:23'malibag' on the episode title.
00:26The format was so easy
00:27and then eventually
00:29it's become a recurring thing.
00:30"Wedding ring!?", she answers
00:33"Wala siyang ring kapag nagkikita kami"
00:36So you went to the coffee shop.
00:37You showed the picture na parang
00:40'Bam! May asawa ka pala! Hayop ka!"
00:43To clarify the timeline
00:45talagang inspectors talaga tayo
00:47Just to clarify the timeline, 'no
00:48here's my notebook, I'm taking notes
00:502018 naging kayo?
01:01We do get a lot [of letters]
01:02and it's pretty hard to sort and filter out
01:06kasi you want to help everyone
01:08and it's gotten to a point na we have asked
01:14other people for help in sorting
01:20kasi it takes a lot of emotions.
01:23Especially for me, I'm very empathetic.
01:26and I'm just like "Oh my gosh, I want to reply
01:28to every single one
01:29even if we won't feature them in the podcast
01:32and if I did that I think I wouldn't be able to do anything else
01:35But we do get to feature the
01:41most interesting ones on our podcast.
01:44Just recently we did one about
01:47a girl who was getting strange text messages
01:50and she thinks it's from her ex-boyfriend's
01:52current girlfriend
01:54and they are creepy text messages
01:57and she sent us receipts.
01:58Nakakatakot yan.
02:00Etong April lang, nag-message
02:01Don't look inside your closet now tapos may wink
02:04Ok, I haven't even read the other ones
02:07This is stressful!
02:08Natatakot talaga 'ko
02:10Kawawa naman
02:12After accepting his friend request
02:13I got another cryptic text
02:15hours later saying napaka-*bleeps*
02:23I'm so happy that you blocked him
02:25parang "Uhm, actually super happy kami
02:27pero medyo psycho siya ah
02:29You know how Pinoys love teleseryes
02:33We just, we live for the drama
02:35I think it's an escape
02:37and to hear that other people
02:39are having problems
02:41probably worse than
02:42what we're experiencing right now
02:44It's a little calming
02:46So in trying to solve other people's problems
02:48you kind of forget your own
02:50and you feel like you helped
02:52and it makes you feel better.
02:59You know, like in any endeavor
03:01that relates to creation,
03:03any form of creation
03:05I think consistency is always number one
03:07My tip is you have to enjoy it
03:10parang assume that the first 10 episodes
03:13absolutely no one will listen
03:15and you still have a blast
03:17Kasi if you can't do it for 10 episodes then
03:21most probably you're not that into it pala
03:25My tip rin and that's a good tip
03:28especially kasi that worked for us
03:30We just had fun
03:31and we're very lucky
03:33that we had a great community
03:37that came out of it
03:38but if you do want to grow your listenership
03:41I would advise to think about your
03:45like what your podcast is gonna be about
03:48and just keep asking yourself 'so what?'
03:50Kasi if you want to write,
03:52if you want to talk about
03:53let's say, food
03:54So what? Well, food is great
03:57So what?
03:57And then you build what you really want
04:00the podcast to be about
04:01you keep asking 'so what?'
