JADE CHIPPS, 31, has never met her husband outside of prison - but she has got a life-size cutout of him to keep her company at home. Jade first got the idea to write to an inmate after watching an interview with a woman who met her husband through a prison pen-pal website. With nothing to lose, Jade went to a prison pen-pal website for inmates based close by to her home, where she came across her now husband, Chris. Jade wrote to Chris, but initially didn’t hear back for nine months. However, after he did finally write back Jade was taken aback by Chris’ openness. From that point their relationship grew to speaking on the phone daily, until Jade decided to meet Chris in person. For Jade, it was love at first sight. She knew Chris was the one and only a few months later, Chris proposed. Despite Jade’s love for Chris, she didn’t immediately say yes to the proposal. She had to consider that Chris, who was serving 10 years for identity theft and burglary, wouldn’t be out of prison until 2024. However, Chris convinced her and in October 2018 the couple got married in Chris’ prison. The couple now speak as much as three times a day on the phone and before the pandemic, Jade would see Chris once a week, but now Jade can only see him once a month. However, Jade would advise others from pursuing an inmate relationship, as she admits it can be stressful. Once Chris is released the couple plan to live in the house Chris bought Jade and start a family together.
