Use Eye Shadow to Color your Hair

00:00 What I'd like to demonstrate today is when I was just recently in New York, the biggest
00:10 buzz word was colour.
00:11 So it was all colour, colour, colour.
00:13 I just recently returned from a trip in India and what I found was the women were colouring
00:17 their hair with coloured powder.
00:19 So I think that colour is a really great thing but you can't really have it every single
00:23 day of your life.
00:24 So what I'm going to show you today is a thing that's called colour pigment.
00:27 Now you can just use eye shadow normally and what I'm going to do today, I'm going to colour
00:32 Jade's hair completely pink.
00:34 Now the thing, Jade would love to have pink hair but she doesn't want to have pink hair
00:37 every day and what the powder does is it gives it like an amazing texture.
00:40 So all you have to do is just take a bit of powder in your hand, rub it into the palm
00:45 of your hand and then place it on top of the hair and actually rub it into the hair so
00:50 you get this really amazing texture plus this amazing colour.
00:54 And I think the best thing about it is that it just rinses out in water.
00:58 So you get this great texture without having to sit in the salon for four hours.
01:03 So firstly we used a bit of anti-gravity because we wanted to get a bit of anti-gravity in
01:07 the hair to make it stick.
01:08 So I've done that secretly without you even seeing it because I didn't want to sit here
01:12 with a hairdryer and dry the hair.
01:13 So section the hair off, always start at the top of the head.
01:17 I always find it's better to get everything onto the top and the front first and then
01:20 you can sort of fudge the back sort of later.
01:23 So just smooth it through the ends, rub it through.
01:26 You get a bit dirty but you'll be fine.
01:29 So what we're going to do is concentrate mainly at the top and work our way down.
01:34 Just do it section by section.
01:35 Just pinch a little bit, put some in the palm of your hands.
01:38 You see it's quite sort of iridescent.
01:41 You can use orange, you can use pink, you can go crazy if you want to.
01:45 You can mix your colours in.
01:46 I think that having your hair coloured like this is a really big investment but just colouring
01:52 it pink for the night or for the day is a really good thing for clients and it gives
01:55 the hair an incredible texture that you've never really sort of seen before because it's
02:00 a much drier texture and you can blow dry it afterwards as well to get more of a softer
02:05 look as well.
02:06 So I did it for Vogue magazine just recently in India and if you look closely you can see
02:12 we just put it just in the part line of the hair so there's a definite sort of orange
02:15 part because we wanted to sort of emulate what they did in India.
02:20 In India what a woman does is she puts that orange stuff in her hair once she's married.
02:25 So it was like a wedding sort of thing but we're using hot pink because we don't really
02:28 want to offend anybody.
02:31 So this is pure pigment.
02:34 Now we just keep working that through the hair.
02:43 Grab into the palms and work that into the ends of the hair.
02:51 So this is not for Mrs Brown who just wants a little bit of softness, this is for someone
02:54 who wants a very dramatic look.
02:58 Okay, so we're getting this right through Jade's hair now.
03:02 I think the trick is to wipe your hands over the hair so don't go running your hands through
03:06 the hair because you don't want to break up the powder too much.
03:10 The more, the thicker you put the powder the more iridescent the colour is.
03:14 Now if you're feeling that you want it a bit more pastel-y you can blow wave the hair afterwards
03:18 which gives it a nice pastel look and means you've got less product falling out everywhere
03:23 as well.
03:24 So it can be a bit of a problem if you're wearing a white suit to have pink hair so
03:29 you want to try and blow wave that out as much as possible.
03:31 So I find that when I'm working I like to run my hands over the hair and around the
03:36 hair.
03:37 Don't really go through the hair because when you're going through the hair you're
03:39 taking away your natural texture.
03:41 So just be mindful that you're not really doing that and make sure the hair is completely
03:45 dry before applying the powder purely because you don't want the powder to get any brighter
03:51 and if the hair is wet then the powder is going to be a lot brighter but also will make
03:55 it a lot more natural.
03:56 So it really depends on what look you're going for.
03:59 I don't believe this is a natural look and we're not really trying to be natural here,
04:02 we're trying to get a rough sort of punk, Zandra Rhodes I think would be the original
04:08 person who wore pink hair all of her life and I think she still has pink hair.
04:12 She's about sort of 60 and looks amazing but you know it's high maintenance so this is
04:16 a low maintenance way of changing your clients and getting a great texture in the hair that
04:21 you haven't really seen before.
04:23 I think that if you have a look in the magazines there's a lot of this dry dusty look coming
04:27 out in the magazines so I think that clients like to have it but they don't really want
04:32 to have it every day of their lives because now women are expected to have great jobs,
04:38 look really professional, have children and look amazing all the time but you can't really
04:43 wear this to the office because it's going to send out the wrong message but you want
04:46 to wear it on the weekend where you do want to send out the wrong message.
04:49 So we're just going to apply a little bit more around the front.
04:55 You can see it's got a great texture to it.
04:59 This works on the lighter heads of hair as well so make sure if you're choosing a brunette
05:04 you need to make sure that you are not going to see as much colour obviously.
05:10 Again this is a one night thing, it's not for every day.
05:14 I think that this would be quite tedious to do every day.
05:16 What do you think?
05:17 Jade, would you do it every day?
05:19 No.
05:20 No.
05:21 But Jade likes it because she's nice and young and she likes it to look different.
05:24 Jade being a professional model means that she can't have too much of a crazy look but
05:28 she still wants to have a good time.
05:31 And she still wants to look great when she goes out but she doesn't want to look like
05:33 a model every time she goes out.
05:35 Because there's that model uniform where the girls just wear black jeans and they don't
05:39 look like models when they go out because otherwise too many boys talk to them.
05:44 For some people it could be an advantage.
05:49 But for me it's about changing your clients all the time and giving them new textures
05:53 and new looks that look sort of cool and groovy.
05:55 So I think that's about it.
05:57 I think that we've done it now.
05:58 What do you think?
05:59 And you can see we can get it really quite messy and chunky but it's a very sexy look.
