00:00 Hi everybody, I'm Lori Gelman from Howdini.com and we're having a block party.
00:07 Make that a building block party.
00:09 Grab some hard hats and lots of colorful blocks and let your kids turn your dining room into
00:13 a construction site.
00:15 Just make sure they don't try to build with these blocks because these are the cakes.
00:19 Now all we need is a little help from our friend Leif Hansen for the Betty Crocker Kitchens.
00:23 Hey Leif.
00:24 Hi Lori.
00:25 I hear we're going to do some building but where's your hard hat?
00:27 No hat needed.
00:28 Really?
00:29 Okay.
00:30 This is a nice soft cake.
00:31 Okay.
00:32 But it looks fantastic.
00:33 So we're going to make some building blocks and you start with a 13 by 9 inch cake and
00:38 you want to make them level.
00:39 So we're going to trim off the dome and we can set that aside because we're not going
00:45 to need it anymore.
00:48 And then we're going to flip it over because this is the baked side and there's not as
00:51 many crumbs on it so when you go to frost it, it's going to be a lot easier.
00:55 Okay.
00:56 We're still going to crumb coat though, right?
00:57 We are going to do a crumb coat.
00:58 Okay.
00:59 And you can do it in lots of different sizes.
01:00 So what I recommend is cutting it into three equal sized strips and then some blocks are
01:05 square so you just can cut one of them in half.
01:08 So Lori, if you pass me that plate, I'll show you how to do a crumb coat.
01:11 You bet.
01:12 And we should mention that you chilled this cake after you baked it for about half an
01:16 hour, right?
01:17 Yeah.
01:18 That'll firm up the cake and that way you'll have less crumbs also.
01:19 Okay.
01:20 Okay.
01:21 So I'm going to take some blue frosting and spread a nice thin layer on top and it can
01:30 extend over the sides a little bit.
01:33 And why do you crumb coat anyway?
01:34 A crumb coat is basically just a thin layer of frosting that seals in all of the crumbs
01:39 because if you went ahead and you have all these cut sides, they tend to crumb up a lot.
01:43 So when you apply your frosting, you get crumbs in it.
01:47 So you don't have to be too fancy with the crumb coat.
01:49 No, as smooth as you can get it, the better.
01:52 Well, I came in early this morning and I crumb coated one for you so we can just swap.
01:57 Thank you.
01:58 Okay, so now we'll do our final coat.
02:00 Great.
02:01 Okay.
02:02 These colors are so great that you have.
02:05 Well, to get really vibrant colors, you can use gel colors.
02:08 It's a more concentrated color than the liquid ones that you can get in the grocery store.
02:13 So what I did is I applied some frosting to the top and then I'm going to go around and
02:17 finish the sides and that will create a little lip around the top.
02:22 Okay, so now this lip is formed and I'm just going to come in and scrape it off towards
02:28 the center of the cake.
02:31 You're using your offset spatula but you can use a knife.
02:36 So now we have to build the little connectors and we're going to do it with marshmallows.
02:41 Oh, second to cake, my favorite thing in the world.
02:44 Well, as you well know then, marshmallows are a little sticky.
02:47 So a great trick is to use scissors that have been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
02:52 And they just cut right through like butter.
02:56 So now we're going to frost them.
02:57 Just insert a fork into the side and then you take your little offset spatula.
03:02 Okay, I have that.
03:04 Put a little frosting on top and then you go around the sides and you just move the
03:11 fork around as needed.
03:13 And there's going to be a little spot that you don't get but we'll fix that once we
03:16 get on the cake.
03:18 And then once you have it frosted, you just slip it onto the cake and then you can just
03:23 touch it up a little bit in the spots that you might have missed.
03:27 Okay, and then we'll have four on this side.
03:31 How's this?
03:32 That looks right.
03:33 You want to put it all the way down.
03:34 Okay.
03:35 There you go.
03:36 And now nudge it off.
03:37 Great.
03:38 Okay.
03:39 Excellent.
03:40 All right, I'm ready.
03:41 Okay.
03:42 You ready?
03:43 I'm ready.
03:44 Okay.
03:45 So you just touch it down and then push it off.
03:48 Great.
03:49 That really looks great.
03:52 Are we going to put it on with the rest of it?
03:53 That's a great idea.
03:54 Okay.
03:55 Okay.
03:56 So I just slip a big spatula underneath.
03:58 And then put it down.
04:01 I'll take my little spatula just to nudge it off.
04:05 Ta-da!
04:06 This looks so great.
04:08 Anybody would love to have this at their party.
04:09 Thanks Leigh.
04:10 Thanks Lori.
04:11 Who doesn't love a building block party?
