Un professeur d'histoire bourru et mal-aimé dans une école préparatoire en 1970 en Nouvelle-Angleterre, n'a pas de famille et nulle part où aller pour les vacances de Noël. Il reste à l'école pour surveiller les élèves qui ne peuvent pas rentrer chez eux. Bientôt, il n'en restera plus qu'un - Angus, un bon élève mais très turbulent. Ils sont rejoints par la cuisinière en chef de Deerfield, une afro-américaine qui s'occupe des fils de privilégiés et dont le propre enfant a récemment disparu au Vietnam. Ces trois exclus vont former une famille improbable durant deux semaines.
