00:00 Welcome back to New Rockstars.
00:01 I'm Hector Navarro, and this is a breakdown
00:03 of the official final trailer for Blue Beetle,
00:06 coming to theaters August 18th.
00:08 Before we jump into all the Scarab-y goodness,
00:10 I want to remind you that New Rockstars
00:12 is now three channels.
00:14 This main channel for Easter egg breakdowns,
00:16 the deep dive for special film analyses
00:18 from your favorite and mine, Mr. Eric Voss,
00:20 and the break room, where you can find
00:22 our secret invasion after show inside Marvel.
00:25 Hey, I'm on that too, cool.
00:26 Subscribe to all three and support our network
00:29 with a Skrull-inspired shirt from nerdriot.shop,
00:32 unless you yourself are a Skrull,
00:34 in which case you should still get one
00:35 to throw people off your trail.
00:37 Let's get started, here we go.
00:38 (upbeat music)
00:39 - Okay, on flight.
00:42 Let's do this.
00:43 - Yeah!
00:46 You gotta force it to come out.
00:50 What are you?
00:51 - You're a genius.
00:53 - I know, but what I say?
00:55 - No, no, no, no, no, no!
00:56 (explosion)
00:59 (roaring)
01:01 - In the opening of the trailer,
01:03 we see hero Jaime Reyes, played by Xolo Maridueña,
01:06 his uncle Rudy, played by the legend George Lopez,
01:09 and Jenny Cord, our hero's potential love interest,
01:12 played by Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezini,
01:14 Jenny being related to the villain
01:16 of the movie, Victoria Cord.
01:18 Jaime is rocking some color appropriate attire
01:21 and trying to get himself to fly,
01:22 as one would if they learned they were bonded
01:25 to an alien super suit.
01:26 We can also see a beetle shaped statue
01:28 on the railing nearby.
01:29 Gotta surround this movie in all kinds of beetles.
01:32 After some inspiration from Theo Rudy,
01:34 rocking what is probably a Virgin Mary tattoo,
01:37 we get to see an extremely cool,
01:39 slow motion blue beetle activation.
01:41 And then we cut to.
01:42 (dramatic music)
01:44 - Did you know what was gonna happen to my brother?
01:46 When you stuck him with this world destroying thing?
01:49 - It's called the Scarab.
01:51 I had no idea it would activate.
01:55 - He has to choose you.
01:56 - So how do we get it to un-choose me?
01:59 (dramatic music)
02:02 - Host acquired.
02:05 - Who said that?
02:06 - Systems tracking, three, two.
02:08 - It's gonna be okay.
02:09 - All tail, baby.
02:10 - I was down when they see him.
02:12 - One day earlier, which gives us some idea
02:14 how much time might pass for this superhero origin story.
02:18 We may see Jaime have to become the blue beetle
02:20 fight for his family in a matter of days.
02:22 Then another shot of the sci-fi advanced looking
02:25 Palmera City skyline with some missable details
02:28 you might have missed.
02:30 Ace chemicals on the left, an ad for Axe body spray
02:33 saying power up with blue, so look out for that.
02:35 Real world product placement maybe.
02:37 An ad for a ramen temple opening soon.
02:39 A LexCorp building that doesn't quite get to finish
02:42 spelling out its letters, which technically gives us
02:45 our first mention of Lex Luthor
02:47 in this new DC Universe franchise.
02:49 Cool, new Superman actor David Cornswet
02:52 is probably gonna have to deal with that guy.
02:53 Then Kord Plaza in all its purple glory.
02:56 A little boat advertising PC coffee,
02:58 maybe a Ford truck ad, so look out for that.
03:00 Real world product placement probably coming soon.
03:03 And some signage for a business called Yogi Yoga,
03:06 which I feel like some characters in this movie
03:07 might benefit from after dealing with all this trauma.
03:10 Next shot is the inside of Kord Plaza
03:12 with some more missable details
03:14 like images of the movie's villain, Victoria Kord,
03:16 played by Speed Racer's mom, Susan Sarandon,
03:19 surrounded by kids with the word humanitarian above them.
03:22 A reminder that, just like in our world,
03:23 a billionaire's philanthropy work is usually used
03:26 to cover up the more shady stuff they're doing.
03:28 Too real!
03:29 Plus we also see some examples of Kord tech,
03:31 like their version of a VR headset
03:33 or a Google Glass type of product.
03:35 Kord may be the DCU's version of Apple,
03:37 but you know, evil, or I should say more evil.
03:40 We then see a great closeup of the Scarab,
03:42 as Jenny tells us it's called,
03:44 hooked up to what's probably a bunch of Kord equipment
03:46 as they're trying to study the alien tech's capabilities.
03:49 Theo Rudy sports an EMC chain around his neck,
03:52 which, knowing his anti-fascist ideology,
03:54 may stand for everything must change, which is dope.
03:58 - Oh baby.
03:59 - Stop, stop, stop!
04:00 - Host overreacting.
04:01 - Overreacting?
04:03 - No!
04:04 - You kidnapped me!
04:05 - I'm gonna hit you with that gun on me.
04:07 - Threat approaching.
04:09 Engaging host protection.
04:11 - Dig it like a Jew, dog.
04:12 - Whoa!
04:13 - And when we get in mode,
04:14 I'ma jog it like a coochie.
04:15 - Whoa!
04:16 - Threat eliminated.
04:18 - Trying on them!
04:20 - Like we've seen before,
04:21 we get to re-experience the glory
04:23 that is the Scarab suiting Jaime up for the first time.
04:26 And once that cheeky alien tech voice kicks in,
04:29 we learn that she's got a real personality too.
04:31 - Stop, stop!
04:32 - Host overreacting.
04:34 - Overreacting?
04:35 (laughs)
04:36 - Host overreacting, classic, that's great.
04:38 One other thing we wanna make sure to point out
04:40 is the brilliant little sound of amazement
04:42 that Jaime lets out while his suit
04:44 is slicing through the city bus.
04:46 (siren blaring)
04:48 It's just a great acting choice, or writing choice,
04:50 or whoever's choice it was deserves all the praise
04:53 because it's hilarious.
04:54 (siren blaring)
04:55 Also, right after this moment,
04:57 we get a shot of a little brown kid in the bus
04:59 looking up to see the superhero.
05:01 And we're sure this moment was very purposeful,
05:04 reminding us how little we've seen
05:06 Latino superhero main characters in big projects like this,
05:09 and how much Jaime Reyes and his story means to us all.

06:33 military-looking Arctic installation,
06:35 probably built by Accord Industries,
06:36 complete with their own version of the Las Vegas I-Orb.
06:39 Sweet!
06:40 This actually brings us to a great shot
06:42 with some folks you may recognize.
06:43 Susan Sarandon, as Victoria Cord,
06:45 is in the middle, of course,
06:46 looking super cool in her Arctic gear,
06:48 with two great actors flanking her on either side.
06:51 On screen left, we've got Raul Max Trujillo,
06:54 we saw earlier in the trailer
06:55 attending some fancy schmancy party,
06:58 as Conrad Karapax, aka the Indestructible Man,
07:02 here rocking a really badass-looking poncho,
07:04 probably covering up some cool tech of his own.
07:07 Check out his hand!
07:08 And on screen right, we've got Harvey Guillen,
07:11 who you may know as Guillermo
07:12 from the What We Do in the Shadows series,
07:15 and who you may have heard as the voice of Perrito
07:17 in Puss in Boots, The Last Wish,
07:19 the best movie of last year,
07:20 here playing Dr. Sanchez,
07:22 a scientist working with Victoria Cord and Cord Industries,
07:25 himself rocking a very cozy-looking jacket and hat.
07:28 We have a feeling that he may be
07:30 the type of scientist character
07:31 who realizes the error of his ways
07:33 and turns on the bad guys,
07:35 because how can you ask audiences

08:01 between the villain and our hero, Blue Beetle,
08:03 but you may have missed some of the detailing
08:05 of the bad guy's armored suit.
08:07 It looks like we've got at least two versions of Karapax,
08:10 with one looking a bit more like an exoskeleton,
08:12 that's the one taking on Jaime as he yells,
08:14 "You got the wrong guy!
08:16 "I'm a nobody, I swear!"
08:17 And another shot of a more fully-armored Karapax,
08:20 maybe reaching his final form of the indestructible man.
08:23 We think taking place after that pretty gnarly shot
08:26 of wires and cables inserting themselves
08:29 into Karapax's arm and body.
08:30 We think we're gonna get Kord siphoning
08:32 some of the Scarab's power into this armor
08:34 and giving us a Red Beetle version
08:36 of the good guy, Blue Beetle.
08:38 - I have an arsenal at my disposal.

08:57 glowing in the Blue Beetle's weaponry,
08:59 symbols that may be the alien Reach's language,
09:03 also cleverly looking reminiscent
09:05 of Earth-Egyptian hieroglyphics,
09:07 tying in some of that sci-fi history of the Reach

09:48 that Jaime has to being the Blue Beetle,
09:50 because the alien Scarab has attached itself to his back
09:54 and it doesn't look exactly comfy.
