Local Musician Wheelwright on His Southwestern Sound

  • last year
Wheelwright brings a southwestern sound of pop and grunge from the sprawling desert city of Phoenix, AZ. None of his songs are idealistic. No light without darkness, no laughter without at least some suffering, no thoughtfulness without some recklessness. Learn more at https://wheelwrightphx.com

00:00 All right, Tequila Corrido is a local tequila company
00:03 supporting artists with their artist showcase.
00:06 And this month they are featuring Will Wright,
00:09 who is actually Arizona native,
00:11 but I guess we can't say you're really here
00:13 'cause you have been traveling all over performing.
00:17 So it's kind of like a treat to have you in tonight.
00:19 - I'm so happy to be in town.
00:20 - For an awesome performance.
00:21 And actually it's gonna be two,
00:22 well I say nights, for me, night time is like four o'clock,
00:26 but even though that's happy hour for people.
00:28 - That's it.
00:29 - And so, especially if you're having this,
00:31 you gotta bed early.
00:31 (laughing)
00:33 But this is awesome.
00:33 So you're this week's artist and you're performing where?
00:37 - At the top of Hotel Palomar.
00:39 There's a new bar called Eden up there.
00:40 - Yes, so we've actually done that bar on our show.
00:44 - Oh, awesome.
00:45 - And what's really cool,
00:46 it's actually a bar with cocktails more than food,
00:49 which is really neat.
00:50 So the tequila fits perfect in there.
00:52 And that's awesome that you teamed up with them,
00:53 they teamed up with you to do the series to bring music
00:56 'cause that's what you gotta get back to.
00:57 Singer songwriters out there performing up close.
01:00 So you're gonna do a little acoustic for tonight.
01:03 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:04 - It's gonna actually be streaming too,
01:05 even though we might have some warm temperatures.
01:06 - That's it.
01:07 - But I will say up there, it is cool.
01:08 Have you been up to the bar before?
01:09 - I haven't, this is my first time.
01:10 - Is it?
01:11 Oh my goodness.
01:12 So it's actually right by the pool,
01:13 which is really nice.
01:14 It's beautiful up there.
01:15 And I mean, it's gonna be nice.
01:16 And what's really cool, the sun sets on the other side,
01:19 so it'll be nice and cool when you start to play.
01:21 - Love it.
01:22 - Which is really nice,
01:23 but the drinks and everything will be good.
01:24 I understand they're gonna be having
01:25 a little bit of tequila up there to enjoy, right?
01:28 - Sounds like it.
01:29 (laughing)
01:30 Yes, sir.
01:31 Yeah, lots of tequila, corrido.
01:33 And it's funny, when you talked about teaming up
01:35 with music and tequila,
01:36 corrido is actually a style of song
01:38 in like the folk music of Mexico.
01:40 So they're fully invested in the whole music thing.
01:43 It's pretty cool.
01:44 - That's why you always see,
01:44 when you get a bottle, this pic right here.
01:47 And of course, the owners are big
01:49 into supporting the communities,
01:50 big in supporting music and artists and everything.
01:53 So that's gonna be awesome.
01:54 - All right, what time do you start playing down there?
01:56 - I'll be on at four.
01:57 - Four o'clock?
01:58 - Yep, and the first hour will be streamed
02:00 on Tequila Critto's Instagram.
02:02 - That's awesome.
02:02 - We'll be going live, so.
02:03 - Live, wow.
02:04 - So plug in.
02:05 - And you're gonna also,
02:06 I mean, what's really cool too,
02:07 it's like, neat with you,
02:08 you're gonna be talking with the audience,
02:10 you're interacting with people,
02:11 'cause people have questions and talking
02:12 and different things like that about your songs and stuff.
02:15 And so, how long you been writing?
02:17 - I don't, you know, that's a tough question to answer,
02:19 'cause I've been doing it since I was a little kid,
02:21 but I've been doing the music thing professionally
02:24 for about 10 years now.
02:25 - Yeah, 'cause you come from a long line of musicians
02:27 in your family, right?
02:28 - I come from a long line of cowboys.
02:32 - Oh, is that what it is?
02:33 - Yeah, but I'm the only one
02:35 that can carry a tune in my family.
02:36 But, you know, my family were all real cowboys,
02:41 and I'm more of a road cowboy,
02:42 a Willie Nelson style cowboy out on tour all the time.
02:46 - That's awesome.
02:46 All right, where can they find you?
02:49 - Instagram is great.
02:50 You can find me at Wheelwright.
02:52 I got a website, wheelwrightphx.com.
02:55 - Nice, all right.
02:56 You're gonna play for us.
02:57 What are you gonna play for us?
02:58 - I'm gonna play you a song called "Sympathy."
02:59 - All right, here he is, ladies and gentlemen.
03:00 Catch him tonight over at EDA Bar.
03:03 It's Will Wright.
