00:00 I would move heaven, hell and earth to get to you.
00:05 You wouldn't be safe anywhere if I attacked you.
00:10 And that's not bullshit. That's true.
00:13 I've went up to a lot of people.
00:16 You could pull a gun on me. I'm mad at you.
00:19 I'm comfortable with that.
00:22 You'd have to shoot me instead of me.
00:25 And if you don't kill me, you're stupid.
00:29 And you'd be afraid not to kill me because at our next meeting,
00:33 I will kill you.
00:56 In 1991, the American HBO channel interviewed Richard Kutlensky,
01:01 a raggedy-dude called "The Ice Man", for a special show on the American Undercover.
01:07 How many people have you killed?
01:12 Approximately.
01:25 More than a hundred.
01:27 After a life of killing, Kutlensky is finally arrested by a double agent,
01:36 equipped with a micro-emitter.
01:40 Are you willing to go on a contract?
01:44 If the price is right, I'll talk to anybody.
01:48 Yeah, but how the fuck do you put it together?
01:51 There's always a way. There's a will, there's a way, my friend.
01:55 Richard Kutlensky is one of the most dangerous criminals
01:59 that there has ever been in this country.
02:02 He murdered by guns, he murdered by strangulation,
02:07 he murdered by putting poison in the food of his victims.
02:10 He did all of this at the same time while living a normal,
02:15 flaccid family existence.
02:17 His wife, his children, they were all unaware of his criminal activities.
02:21 Yet, we are faced with evidence of grisly murders.
02:28 In 1986, the New Jersey Intervention Force against Organized Crime
02:36 set up a mouse trap in front of Kutlensky's house.
02:39 The men went in five to neutralize him and pass him the handcuffs.
02:44 The killer is 1.95 meters tall and weighs 136 kilos.
02:48 The Ice Man has finally arrived at the end of his career as a master of crime.
02:53 Richard Kutlensky knows he will never get out of prison.
02:58 He has nothing to lose.
03:02 He also raises the veil on those years when he was a killer on the account of the Gambino,
03:07 a family of the mafia.
03:09 He speaks of events that made him what the police called the Ice Man.
03:15 I hated my father.
03:23 If I could have, I probably would have killed him.
03:29 Probably would have felt good about it.
03:32 My father would beat me just for nothing.
03:37 I just had to look at him.
03:40 It's through this impersonal feeling I have towards people.
03:43 When I die in front of my eyes.
03:45 I love my people.
03:47 I love my father.
03:50 When a loudmouth person is like me, I go to the quarter.
03:54 I don't need more.
03:57 I don't need more.
03:59 One evening, in a bar, a loudmouth makes the mistake of insulting Kutlensky,
04:05 at the age of 18, and to do it in public.
04:08 A few hours later, the Ice Man gives him the opportunity to return the money from his room.
04:14 I came out of this bar, I saw him sleeping in his car.
04:21 I said to myself, "I got you little sucker, it's gonna be your party."
04:26 "I'm gonna light you a fire."
04:29 And I did.
04:31 I got my bottle, some gas, and I threw it in his car.
04:36 And he was screaming in the flames.
04:47 And burning.
04:49 I'll burn.
04:54 And I could tell that I was burned.
04:56 I walked out of the car, and I could hear, I could hear his screams.
05:01 It was just me, I didn't like this guy.
05:08 What did he do to you?
05:10 He made me a pig.
05:13 [Music]
05:16 At 25, Richard Kutlensky can kill with cold blood.
05:32 From now on, he wants to be paid for it.
05:36 There is money to be made in the murder on order.
05:41 To show his abilities, he gives an audition in front of Roy Dimeo, a mafia boss.
05:47 He said, "Well, I would expect you to join us."
05:53 "What I expect from you is that if I tell you to whack someone, you do it without any question."
06:00 So I said, "Well, I could probably do it."
06:09 "And he?" "What do you mean?"
06:11 "Can you do it or can you do it?"
06:12 "Do you think you can do it?"
06:15 "Yes, I think I can do it."
06:17 He told Freddy to go get the car.
06:21 He got in the back seat, and Freddy was driving.
06:27 We drove some place, I don't know where, it was New York.
06:31 And we were sitting there for a while.
06:37 We arrived at the destination.
06:39 We waited a little bit, and from far away, we saw a guy coming towards us.
06:44 He was walking his dog. Roy said, "Well, take this guy down."
06:52 I said, "What? Who are you talking about?"
06:57 He said, "This guy, the one who is walking his dog."
07:05 So I got out of the car, I went towards the man, who was walking his dog like any other pecan.
07:12 As he passed me, I turned around and shot him.
07:18 Freddy and Roy stopped, I got in the car, and we left.
07:30 And that is how I got involved with Roy's business.
07:36 A brothel, called Gemini Lounge in Brooklyn, is a place where Roy Dimeo is kept.
07:51 It is a real horror house, where more than 100 people will be killed and cut into pieces, while Dimeo and his gang of thugs get rid of them.
08:00 After having done his test, Kuklinski soon became one of Dimeo's favorite fund collectors.
08:08 He passed orders that Kuklinski executed without asking any questions.
08:16 He wanted this guy to take care of me, but he wanted to talk to him first.
08:25 So, when I got to the place, I asked the man for the money.
08:35 He said he didn't have it, and Roy just had to wait until he got the money.
08:40 And that was that, he'd have to wait.
08:44 I said to the man, I told him, "You have to then talk to him, he wants to talk to you."
08:49 So, I dialed the phone, and he got on the phone, and I said, "He wants to talk to you."
08:58 So, he was talking to me, and I guess it worked, he was all right, because he's not folding his hands and talking back.
09:07 He said, "I know you did wait, he's in a frame of mind, don't worry about it, he wants to talk to you."
09:13 So, I picked up the phone, and he said, "Kill him."
09:16 So, I got on the phone, and I went.
09:22 I picked up the phone, and I went.
09:27 I am just a man working in difficult situations, of sorts.
09:41 I consider myself a man who does something because someone else is asking him to do it.
09:46 And they pay me well for that.
09:49 In the early 80's, things were starting to look bad for the Gambinos.
09:58 A vast investigation led to their boss, Paul Castellano.
10:02 As the pressure grew, the family became more and more concerned about potential witnesses.
10:10 One of them was a major problem.
10:13 It was Peter Calabro. The family was in charge, and it was Kuklinski who signed the contract.
10:20 On March 14, 1980, Kuklinski had been driving for hours on a snowy road in Saddle River, in New Jersey.
10:32 He was waiting for a call on his Tolkiwolki.
10:36 [Music]
10:42 I get a call, that they're on their way.
10:47 So, now they're coming.
10:49 And it's snowing.
10:52 The roads are very bad.
10:54 A lot of snow slipping by.
10:57 I was in a van.
10:59 So, what I figured is,
11:03 I was there at the last moment, so I changed my plan.
11:06 I decided to park on the right lane.
11:10 This would give me the advantage, because this way, when I get to my height,
11:15 he'd only have one lane left.
11:18 I go to the back of the van,
11:25 and I go out that door.
11:27 With my gun, of course.
11:32 So, I kneeled down, and I look under the van,
11:36 so I can see where he's approximately at.
11:40 So, I watch him come up to where he's almost at the front of the van, still up.
11:46 And as he's going by, I fire.
11:53 [Gunshot]

12:00 [Explosion]
12:01 I never knew the man.
12:03 I didn't know what face he had, or what he was doing.
12:07 The next day, I read that he was with the police.
12:10 But had I been told to do him anyway,
12:21 I suppose I would have done it anyway.
12:26 I don't think I would have refused.

16:23 They kept babbling.
16:25 And I fired.
16:32 I couldn't see anything because the windows were covered in snow.
16:39 When the shot went off, he was clearly blind.
16:42 I saw 36 candles.
16:45 My ears were ringing.
16:50 There was a hell of a noise in the car.
16:53 I couldn't hear, I couldn't see.
16:55 Then I panicked.
17:01 Because now I didn't know what was going to happen.
17:04 Anyway, I touched him back to the temple.
17:09 And as he moved back,
17:14 the second shot hit him under the chin.
17:19 When I finally saw something,
17:21 I reached for his pocket.
17:24 He had a roll of cash.
17:28 I took my $1,600 and I put the rest in his pocket.
17:32 I got out of the car
17:39 and walked away.
17:46 And that's
17:48 what happened one Christmas Eve in New York City.
17:54 The Ice Man kills with a bullet,
18:08 with a white weapon, with a Molotov cocktail and cyanide.
18:11 But he also likes to experiment.
18:15 He's a crossbowman.
18:17 With the crossbow, I shot him in the forehead.
18:21 Actually, I just wanted to see if it would work.
18:26 What was he doing at that moment?
18:31 He was looking at me.
18:33 Was he sitting down or were you standing over him?
18:36 No, he bent down to talk to me.
18:38 I pretended to ask him for my route.
18:41 I didn't know him.
18:44 I didn't know him.
18:46 Was this a contract, a verbal thing, a personal thing?
18:55 None of that.
19:00 What was it?
19:04 I just wanted to see if this thing would work.
19:08 You were experimenting on somebody?
19:11 That's it.
19:13 Did it work?
19:15 Did it?
19:18 What happened to his head?
19:21 Kuklinski is still looking for new methods of killing.
19:27 In the 1980s, he teamed up with a man named Mr. Softy.
19:34 This ice cream seller, who looks like a lunatic,
19:39 is actually an expert in explosives trained in the army.
19:42 A brutal and perverse killer.
19:45 Mr. Softy's name was Robert Prongay.
19:52 He was so used to moving around in a truck with ice cream,
19:55 Softy, hence his nickname.
19:58 He became friendly with Kuklinski and they became intimate.
20:09 It seems that it was thanks to this friendship that Kuklinski
20:13 learned to handle various poisons,
20:16 including cyanide.
20:19 He taught me a lot of things,
20:28 but he was completely crazy.
20:37 He read all kinds of books on destruction,
20:40 and all kinds of art, to destroy somebody.
20:44 He used to go around in a truck with ice cream, Softy.
20:50 That's how he'd spot people,
20:53 get the out-of-the-way tactics that were really effective.
20:57 Sometimes he'd even drive from the truck.
21:00 And he did sell ice cream?
21:02 Yes, he did.
21:04 He drove into his neighborhood and he sold ice cream to the kids,
21:08 and he killed one of their fathers.
21:11 On August 9, 1984, Mr. Softy was found dead
21:33 lying on the bench of his truck with ice cream.
21:37 He had been shot in the head several times.
21:42 I think Kuklinski killed Prange because he used him for his information.
21:59 He used him for his own.
22:01 He probably brought him with him,
22:04 Mr. Softy probably brought him with him in his contracts.
22:08 At one point he must have thought he was going to take the reins again.
22:13 He might have said to Kuklinski something he hadn't said to him before.
22:18 Whatever it was, I think it was Kuklinski who made the decision to kill him.
22:29 After Prange's murder, Kuklinski's services were rented out for an extremely dangerous contract.
22:35 No one else would be at risk.
22:38 There, in a dark nightclub,
22:40 the murder technique inherited from Mr. Softy will prove to be very useful.
22:45 It wasn't easy for me to approach him in a dark club.
22:55 It was really bad because the schedule was tight.
23:00 So I happened to be watching these people
23:10 and there was a couple of homos dancing and whatever.
23:16 And nobody was paying them any attention, no matter what they were doing.
23:21 Because people avoid paying attention to homos.
23:25 So the idea came to me to disguise myself as a gay.
23:32 But how in the hell was I going to do that?
23:36 A 136-pound gay man playing the crazy,
23:39 that's a little bit far-fetched.
23:42 So, I went to the extreme of far-fetched.
23:50 I found the craziest people you could imagine.
23:54 I mean, I went full-blown gay person.
23:59 I mean, I'm sure it's going to be pissed off at me.
24:02 I'm not saying it's bad, but...
24:04 I got this canary-o sweater,
24:10 and fire pants,
24:12 and elevated shoes, because I'm tall to be good.
24:16 And I got these thin shoes on.
24:19 I'm like a full-blown gay person.
24:22 I mean, I'm dancing.
24:24 And I got on this thing, and I'm doing this, like dancing.
24:30 And I got this thing, and they got these lights.
24:33 And I hate those lights.
24:35 I'm in a horror movie.
24:37 Man, I hate those lights.
24:39 You can't see anything, and it messes up my eyes.
24:42 So anyway, I'm trying to get close to this guy.
24:45 I'm doing this crazy thing.
24:48 I'm making a real swish.
24:50 That's what you would call it.
24:52 And I get up close to this guy.
24:56 And I bump into him.
25:00 But everybody's doing that.
25:03 And he had a heart attack.
25:10 Because I had hypodermic sera.
25:16 And when I bumped into him,
25:18 I popped him.
25:20 What was in this syringe?
25:26 That is a heart attack.
25:29 Richard Copley,
25:43 Richard Kuklinski is a cold-blooded killer.
25:46 There's no doubt about that.
25:48 And many people think that's why he's called the Ice Man.
25:52 But the police have another reason to give him this sobriquet.
25:56 Because to blur the tracks,
26:00 he sometimes puts his victims in the freezer for long periods.
26:04 Causing confusion about the time of death.
26:08 This was notably the fate of a certain Louis Masguet.
26:13 He did too good a job on this body.
26:16 He had been leaving the body in the freezer for more than two years.
26:21 He then took the body out and dumped it.
26:25 Where it was found before it had been completely thawed out.
26:30 So when the medical examiner does the autopsy
26:33 and opens the body up,
26:35 he finds ice inside the body.
26:40 On a warm summer day,
26:44 the medical examiner says,
26:46 "There's something wrong here.
26:48 This guy could have died in a few days."
26:52 Once Louis Masguet's body was half-thawed,
26:58 the crowd began to gather around Kuklinski and his boss, Roy Dimeo.
27:03 Under pressure, Dimeo began to panic.
27:09 The family feared he would crack and come to testify against them.
27:12 In their minds, there was no doubt.
27:15 He had to be eliminated.
27:18 In 1983, Dimeo's body was found in a car trunk.
27:25 He had five bullets in his skin and the death was a week away.
27:29 Some think that Kuklinski could be the killer.
27:36 Do you know anything about this murder?
27:38 Dimeo?
27:40 He outlived his services.
27:47 He was running the wrong way.
27:55 Apparently, everyone thought he was going to the police.
28:01 What did you feel when he was killed?
28:06 I was all broken up.
28:19 No, I'm just kidding.
28:23 What?
28:25 I got a bridge for you. I wasn't broken.
28:27 That was my attempt at levity.
28:31 But I thought at that time that it could not have been a good guy.
28:37 If somebody had to die that day, he had chosen his day.
28:43 During the next three years,
28:51 the New Jersey Office for Organized Crime Repression
28:54 focused its efforts on Kuklinski.
28:57 This one felt overwhelmed and began to eliminate
29:00 anyone who could reveal his criminal activities.
29:04 If he gives you "my friend", you have trouble.
29:09 Yesterday's friends quickly become tomorrow's enemies.
29:13 One of his friends, turned into an enemy,
29:16 was his partner. His name, George Maliband.
29:21 Georgie boy.
29:24 Yeah, yeah.
29:27 I liked him.
29:29 Actually, yeah, really liked him.
29:33 One of the few people I ever really liked.
29:38 But Maliband has bad habits.
29:44 He accumulates gambling debts that rise to several thousand dollars.
29:48 Kuklinski is a guarantor for him,
29:52 but advises him to pay.
29:54 That's when Maliband makes a fatal mistake.
29:57 He threatens Kuklinski to take his family if he doesn't cover for him.
30:02 Which really struck a nerve.
30:08 It upset me, but I was trying not to show it.
30:11 I thought he was saying that because he was nervous,
30:15 he was just unblocking.
30:17 Apparently, it was just more serious than that.
30:21 [Music]
30:23 The Ice Man can't help but forget that Maliband threatened his family.
30:28 A few weeks later, he begins to consider removing him.
30:32 We got in the van,
30:38 and I said to George,
30:41 "George, you really think what you're saying,
30:45 when you talk about taking my family,
30:47 to put pressure on me?"
30:49 He said,
30:52 "That's the only way
30:56 I could get you to do what I want you to do,
31:02 is to hurt your family."
31:04 I said, "But that's the stupid thing that you're saying.
31:07 You don't know how badly my family represents me,
31:10 and you should realize that I'm going to take it very badly."
31:12 He said, "No, you're not going to take it very badly.
31:16 You'd be afraid that something would happen to your family."
31:20 I said, "You'd be very wrong about that, George,
31:26 because I'm going to put a stop to that.
31:29 There's a very good reason I'm going to put a stop to that right now."
31:33 And I shot him five times.
31:37 [Gunshot]
31:38 I could see him, as he was right next to me,
31:40 because he was right in the middle of the van.
31:42 We were sitting in the van,
31:44 me in the steering wheel,
31:46 little George in the passenger seat, like this.
31:49 The bullets went bang, bang, bang,
31:55 and again, bang, bang.
31:58 I could see the material behind his jacket as these things...
32:06 Actually, they made little marks on it.
