00:02 - Welcome in and start us off here with Saquon
00:06 because I was kind of scratching my head
00:09 with this announcement of, hey, he's happy, he signed.
00:14 Wait, wait, what?
00:15 What are your take on this?
00:16 - Yeah, it was surprising to see him agree to a deal
00:20 with the Giants for just the restructured one year,
00:23 just based off some of the comments he had made before.
00:26 It sounded like he was willing to take his hold out
00:28 at least closer to the regular season, if not into it.
00:32 But all of a sudden he did a 180
00:33 and now he's back with the Giants.
00:35 He seems happy and it seems like he's gonna be
00:38 on the field in week one.
00:39 Now, I don't know if the Giants
00:41 with the additions they made to the contract,
00:43 they added some incentives.
00:44 There was a $2 million signing bonus
00:46 and I think they increased the overall contract value
00:49 by up to $900,000 with some incentives.
00:52 So maybe that was enough for Saquon Barkley to say,
00:55 all right, well, they're at least giving me a little more
00:57 than the franchise tender.
00:58 So that's good enough for me.
00:59 But it was certainly strange,
01:01 just given the way that everything had unfolded,
01:03 it seemed like we were heading towards
01:04 maybe a running back revolution of sorts
01:07 with their Zoom call that everyone had
01:08 with Jacobs and Barkley potentially holding out.
01:11 And now all of a sudden Barkley's back, Barkley's happy.
01:14 And it seems like their issues were a thing of the past,
01:17 but I don't know what to make of it exactly.
01:19 But all I know is the Giants fans should be very happy
01:22 he's gonna be back on the field.
01:23 - He never pushed the envelope,
01:26 which is what made it so strange
01:28 because unlike another running back,
01:31 the former Raider, I'm gonna say there,
01:34 he made it very adamant.
01:35 Barkley always seemed like a deal was imminent,
01:38 then the deadline came and nothing.
01:41 And it just seemed like, oh boy, this is gonna get ugly.
01:45 But apparently that $2 million signing bonus
01:48 is really upfront, not having to wait for game one.
01:53 It sounds like maybe that was the difference
01:55 'cause everything else seems to be in line
01:57 with the franchise tag.
01:58 - Yeah, I really think getting that money upfront
02:02 made a difference for him because the franchise tag,
02:04 as I understand it, was valued at 10.1 million.
02:08 And the deals that Barkley had been discussing
02:10 were to make him the highest paid running back in the league
02:13 at about 15 million a year.
02:15 I believe there was reporting that the Giants were saying,
02:17 we'll give you 13 million a year, but not 15 or 16 million.
02:21 And in the end, he ends up settling for a deal worth
02:24 up to what seems to be 10.1 to 11 million.
02:28 But that upfront money, I think,
02:29 does make a big difference.
02:30 And you see that a lot with contract negotiations now.
02:33 If guys can lock in that guaranteed money,
02:35 they're happy to take it.
02:37 That's the beauty of NFL contracts,
02:38 or maybe not the beauty to some people,
02:40 but they're not fully guaranteed.
02:42 So the structure is the most important thing,
02:44 not the total value of it.
