00:00 The current dance alliance is hosting their seventh annual books in motion
00:04 program made to improve literacy in Kern County through dance 23 abc's Ava
00:09 Kirshner joins us live in studio this morning to bring us the books in motion
00:12 spotlight of the week. Ava. Yeah, that's right. Mike Aloha has three
00:17 meanings. Hello, goodbye and love. And the third option is the most
00:22 important in local dance group Aloha Entertainments performances. There's
00:27 double there. You can't catch me. My family is from Hawaii and so we were
00:33 able to find our Ohana, which means family here in our community with
00:38 several different people and being able to spread that Aloha spirit with our
00:42 dance. It's just the best way to express all of our Aloha and expressing
00:47 that Aloha is the main goal for these performers for the past 20 plus years.
00:53 The business has been family owned since 1997 and brings the pacific
00:57 island culture to Bakersfield with classes that they say anyone can join.
01:01 Our mission is basically to just share um the love of the culture through
01:08 song and dance from the pacific islands. We do a lot of hula and Tahitian and
01:14 we have drumming classes and dance classes for all ages. Aloha
01:19 Entertainment story that they perform at current dance alliances books in
01:22 motion is chicka chicka boom boom and it's choreographed in a way that helps
01:26 kids understand the story without the boundary of actually having to read it,
01:31 which the dancers tell me is their favorite part. I like that we get to
01:34 help like Children be able to understand I guess like books and like
01:38 other ways more than just reading. I like being able to help the students
01:42 with crafts and I like that when they're watching, they're not just
01:45 thinking about all the words on my books. They're thinking about the
01:48 different ways you can read it, not only in reading but in dancing to the
01:52 kids don't just think about the words and they just and I like how the just
01:59 get to learn how to dance hula. And speaking of learning how to dance, the
02:04 performer shared a little bit of that aloha spirit with me and it's called
02:08 an uli uli. And so this is one of our implements that we dance with for
02:12 multiple numbers that we have. So it's just a feathered gore kind of like a
02:15 baraka but cooler.
02:21 Yeah, amazing. Thank you. Okay. 23 abc is a proud sponsor of books in motion
02:31 and every week we will have a dance group spotlight showcasing the
02:34 organizations participating in the current dance alliance program to
02:38 follow along, tune in on air and online at turn to 23 dot com live in studio.
