00:00 Wow. It's a movie! It's a movie about a doll!
00:07 Whoopi Goldberg is clapping back at Barbie movie haters.
00:10 On Tuesday's episode of The View, the 67-year-old talk show host responded to criticism the
00:15 film got from conservatives, including Senator Ted Cruz, Ben Shapiro, and more.
00:21 Even before it did big business at the box office this weekend, a wave of conservatives
00:28 were bashing Barbie. Here are some of their complaints.
00:33 I quickly learned this isn't a kids movie after all, because the left has given Barbie
00:39 a complete feminist makeover.
00:41 They're trying to kiss up to the Chinese Communist Party because they want to make money selling
00:46 the movie in China.
00:47 I find it upsetting when material that is based on children's IP and marketed to little
00:52 girls actually ends up being angry feminist claptrap that alienates men from women, undermines
00:58 basic human values, and promotes falsehood all at the same time.
01:02 Wow. Wow.
01:03 It's a movie! It's a movie about a doll! I thought y'all would be happy she has no genitalia
01:14 so there's no sex involved, Ken has no genitalia so he can't be too...
01:20 It's a doll movie! And you know who... the kids know it's colorful and it's Barbie. They
01:30 haven't lived through what the adults have lived through. So when they're seeing this
01:34 movie, that's not how they're looking at it. The kids are looking at it as a Barbie movie.
01:39 You guys, I want you all to tell your daughters why you're not taking them to see the Barbie
01:45 movie. I want you to explain to them what's wrong with Barbie.
01:49 Whoopi then showed off how much she loves Barbie as she put the doll on part of her
01:53 wardrobe for the day. Now look, I love my Barbie.
01:58 Get a close-up. Oh my gosh.
02:05 It's a doll movie, guys. I'm shocked that that's what's freaking you out these days.
02:09 The Sister Act stars co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin chimed in, noting that several of
02:15 her friends from both political sides went to see the highly anticipated film over the
02:20 weekend.
02:21 I also just aspire to have like the time and energy to get worked up over a doll movie.
02:25 Like it reminds me of the Bud Light, you know, scandal or whatever. Is there not something
02:30 more important going on in the world to get super passionate about? But it is, to Joy's
02:34 point, it kind of shows how the right-wing influencers are actually out of touch with
02:38 actual Republicans. Every girlfriend of mine, Republican and Democrat, lined up this weekend
02:42 to see it. There were memes, people were dressing up to go see it. It's fun. Greta Gerwig's
02:47 brilliant. But also, I'm so taken by some of these right-wing men who have all these
02:53 thoughts on masculinity. Like somehow the Barbie movie is going to make them feel emasculated.
02:57 No, caring so much about it is honestly the most emasculating thing I could think about.
03:02 I think the last guy's voice is masculine.
03:03 Wasn't that Ben Shapiro? Because if you're sitting there and you flipped it on a head
03:06 and it was...
03:07 He looks like he should be in a Barbie movie.
03:09 The Greta Gerwig-directed film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, killed it at the
03:13 box office over its opening weekend, raking in $162 million, which was way ahead of its
03:20 original $90 million prediction, and has achieved a total global success of $337 million. The
03:28 film also made history as the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.
03:34 Access Hollywood chatted with Greta at the Los Angeles premiere earlier this month, and
03:38 she opened up about some of the biggest misconceptions about Barbie after giving her opinion on some
03:43 of the fans' theories.
03:44 I love that you're channeling Barbie Pink tonight. Are you channeling a specific Barbie
03:49 as inspo?
03:50 Yeah! Director Barbie! I'm Director Barbie, that's right!
03:51 Director Barbie is the greatest Barbie that I've ever seen. I need to know. I don't know
03:58 if you're on TikTok, I don't know if you're familiarizing yourself with the fan theories,
04:02 but there's a lot of theories going on, and one of them is that America Ferreira is wearing
04:07 black and white all over the press tour because it's like the reverse of the Wizard of Oz.
04:12 Like when Barbie comes to the real world, it's neutral. What do you think about this?
04:15 Well, first of all, I have to say, traveling the world with America and Margot, they just
04:20 both look so incredible every day. So, all of it, I'm always like, "You and you! What's
04:27 going on?" But, I mean, I will say, America is amazing in the movie. She might be bringing
04:33 a dose of reality to Barbie, so we'll see.
04:37 That teaser we didn't know we needed. Okay, I love. I know you talked about when you were
04:41 growing up, your mom wasn't really a huge fan of Barbie. So, I just wanted to know, what
04:46 do you think the biggest misconception is about Barbie, and how are you really changing
04:49 that with this film?
04:50 Yeah, well, I guess since the time I was a little girl, I knew about Barbie and I knew
04:56 the arguments against Barbie in the same breath. I knew the whole thing. And I think mostly
05:01 just that, like, you know, the icon that Barbie is, what's interesting about her is her complexity,
05:09 not her perfection. And I think that's what we try to really dig into with the movie.
05:14 I love it. Last question. Fans are already calling for a Barbie 2 before the first one's
05:18 even out. That's how hyped up this is going. What do we think about that?
05:21 We gotta get this movie out. We gotta get it out. We're gonna see it in theaters, and
05:25 then I'll think about what's next. But right now, I'm just like, July 21st, baby.
05:32 Fair enough. And then this is such an all-star cast, but also so many cameos. Is there a
05:37 favorite cameo in the film?
05:39 Yes, but I'm not gonna tell you.
05:44 Secret, secret. Okay, love it. Thank you for your time tonight.
05:47 Thank you.
