00:00 I'm Oli Davis, this is the WrestleTalk News, and welcome to SummerFest week!
00:11 Yes, I still haven't forgotten that time Jeremy Piven got SummerSlam's name wrong.
00:16 It's been 14 years!
00:18 Why can I remember that but not the reason I came into this room?
00:35 Oh yeah Roman Reigns and SummerSlam plans.
00:37 I'm doing the news!
00:39 Saturday 5th August won't just mark the next chapter in the years-long Roman vs J
00:44 Uso Bloodline epic, it'll also be a full year since Triple H fully took over creative
00:49 control of WWE - following Vince McMahon gracefully stepping down after a long career of service
00:54 to professional wrestling.
00:55 Slash was forced out due to mounting allegations of sexual misconduct.
00:59 And that's how everything stayed.
01:01 He never came back to control things from the shadows after that.
01:05 Vince-interference aside, or Vince-terference, Triple H has overseen arguably WWE's greatest
01:11 run of premium live pay-per-view events in the promotion's history - with great matches,
01:16 awesome angles, and even B-level shows feeling unmissable, just like he did in NXT.
01:21 And the central part of that has been the epic Bloodline saga.
01:25 So what will happen at this Saturday's main event?
01:28 The Tribal Combat match for both the undisputed WWE Universal Championship - that name is
01:33 too long - and the recognition of the Tribal Chief between J and Reigns?
01:38 I think we all know what we want, obviously.
01:41 Let's cut out.
01:42 Sunglasses on, dance sequence with Too Cool.
01:45 Because Rikishi is teasing involvement on social media again.
01:48 Rikishi, who is The Usos' real-life father, Roman Reigns' first cousin, but not related
01:54 to Samoa Joe, has been posting cryptic messages since the faction first imploded at May's
01:59 Night of Champions, tweeting things like "enough" and a gif of the Godfather movie with the
02:03 caption "I'm gonna make him enough that he can't refuse.
02:07 These shows, I'm walking here."
02:08 He more recently said in an interview "I would have to go silent on that one" about
02:13 whether he'd be actually physically involved in the storyline.
02:16 But now he's shared fan art from KingGraphics12 on his Instagram story of Jey Uso wearing
02:21 the Tribal Chief Lay necklace, with Rikishi amongst the family members of Jimmy, Roman
02:26 and Solo behind him, with the caption "run it".
02:30 Blood drop emoji!
02:31 Which led to this excellent Reddit response from Dirty Bird - "The Tribal Cheeks has
02:36 spoken!
02:37 That is top punny!
02:39 Give me your best Rikishi Bloodline puns in the comments or should I say Rikishi Bloodline
02:44 bumps."
02:46 So how could this possibly influence the match?
02:49 Reigns was awarded the lay back at Hell in a Cell 2020 after beating Jey in an I Quit
02:53 match.
02:54 It was presented to him by his father Sika Anoa'i and Uncle Alpha, who were formerly
02:59 the Wild Samoans tag team.
03:01 This was the contextual underpinning of the Bloodline faction, one based on Samoan tradition,
03:06 family and alpha male dominance.
03:08 If Jey beats Roman to become the new Tribal Chief, perhaps he'll be awarded the lay
03:12 by his own father elder Rikishi.
03:15 The Tribal Combat stipulation requires permission from the family elders to take place, which
03:20 have been established as Alpha and Sika, and potentially Rikishi, so they have already
03:24 condoned Jey's challenge against Roman.
03:27 Jey even said it was their idea.
03:29 And the stipulation is no DQ, meaning outside interference can happen from Jimmy, Solo,
03:34 Paul Heyman, the elders of Alpha, Sika and Rikishi too, and maybe even Rock 'The Dwayne'
03:40 Johnson, who's been rumoured for a SamuSam appearance over the last two weeks.
03:44 But not you, Samoa Joe!
03:46 You are the only Samoan wrestler not to be related to any other Samoan wrestler!
03:51 Rather than feeling like the end of this year's long story, it's such an exciting one because
03:55 it kind of feels like it's just getting started.
03:58 There are so many possibilities to go down, with multi-layered characters and inner faction
04:02 relationships.
04:03 If you haven't listened to it already, I cannot recommend Paul Heyman's appearance
04:08 on the Rick Rubin podcast enough.
04:10 Link's in the video description below.
04:12 I didn't realise how few genuine interviews I've listened to with Heyman.
04:15 Sure I've seen him conduct in-character work shoot ones like he's inside the rope
04:19 store, but this confessional and candid chat with Rubin gives you a glimpse into the man
04:23 behind the Advocate or the Wise Man.
04:26 About halfway in, he really goes in-depth on the creative process of the Bloodline saga
04:30 and his relationship with Roman - it's genuinely one of the best wrestling interviews I've
04:34 ever listened to.
04:35 Up there with the Punker Mock Shoot podcast and the Simon Gotchenzo one.
04:39 But it's more of just a nice chat, as opposed to burying WWE in everything they stand for.
04:45 Anyway, there's so many possibilities you can go with the Bloodline saga, but here's
04:49 my pitch.
04:50 Roman beats Jey at SummerSlam through really dodgy means, choosing retaining his Universal
04:54 title over the dignity of the Tribal Chief role.
04:57 The Elders decide to strip Roman from the head of the table because of that, and bestowing
05:02 it on Jey.
05:03 Meaning you can run back Universal Champion Reigns vs Tribal Chief Jey at Payback.
05:09 How would you book the Tribal Combat match?
05:11 Let me know in the comments, where I'll be acknowledging people from outer generations
05:15 of Tribal tradition.
05:16 But before SummerFest, we had Sunday night NXT Great American Bash, which I'm about
05:20 to recap in one minute.
05:23 One take.
05:24 Timer.
05:25 One minute.
05:26 After Team Bunch of Babyfaces beat Meta 4 on the pre-show No Am Da No and an opening
05:31 Cody Rhodes narrated video about Great American Bash, the show opened on the family beating
05:36 Gallus to become the new tag team champions, finally giving D'Angelo gold in NXT.
05:41 Roxanne Perez overcame being beaten up in front of her hometown family to defeat Blair
05:45 Davenport.
05:46 This will presumably build her for a title shot.
05:48 Gable Steveson had an awfully booked in-ring debut against Baron Corbin, which ended in
05:53 a double countout because of brawling.
05:55 The crowd booed Steveson so much, chanting 'you're not Angle' - clap clap clap - they
06:00 actually sometimes cheered Corbin.
06:02 That's how bad this was.
06:04 They cheered Baron Corbin.
06:06 Dirty Don retained his North American title against Wesley and Mustafa Ali, thanks to
06:10 Rhea Ripley, hitting a Riptide on Lee through the announcer's table.
06:13 Tiffany Stratton retained the women's title against Tia Hall when Andre chased her in
06:17 his towel.
06:18 And the main event was a genuine match of the year contender as Iliad Dragunov beat
06:22 the crap out of both himself and Carmelo Hayes.
06:25 Hayes won thanks to Trick Williams interference.
06:47 But don't expect to see Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks join in developmental anytime
06:51 soon as it looks like their long-term future is with AEW.
06:55 The Elites of Maker, Hangman Page and the Bucks all have their AEW contracts reportedly
06:59 expiring at the end of 2023.
07:02 They've apparently been negotiating new deals for months, with no confirmation of
07:06 their long-term future.
07:07 This suddenly seemed up in the air following the 19th July Blood and Guts match, after
07:11 which Kenny cut a promo saying they'll "stick together", but not saying whether
07:16 that would be in AEW.
07:18 Dave Meltzer is now reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that while the Elite themselves
07:22 have stayed tight-lipped on what that means, sources in WWE feel the chances of them getting
07:27 Omega has gone cold, so they do believe he's staying with AEW.
07:32 This has changed since several months ago, where WWE reportedly had the impression they
07:36 had a good shot at Omega in 2024.
07:39 Looking at the latest match announcement for this week's special 200th episode of Dynamite,
07:44 you can see why Omega and the Bucks are likely staying with AEW.
07:48 Omega to face Team TNA with Jeff Jarrett.
07:52 Elsewhere in AEW, we covered the story of veteran women's wrestler Luffyzo angrily
07:56 tweeting about an unnamed person in the promotion stopping her from getting signed.
08:01 Speculation had Britt Baker as the 'talent with too much power' after a similar incident
08:05 with Funderosa.
08:06 Sean Ross Sapp confirmed there was truth to the tweet, but couldn't name who it was
08:10 about specifically.
08:11 PWInsider have since followed this up, clarifying Baker is not involved in this story.
08:16 The next major AEW show is the huge All In event at Wembley Stadium in London on the
08:22 27th August.
08:23 But unless you're one of the 77,000 people who've bought tickets to be there in person,
08:28 nobody knows how everyone else around the world is going to watch it.
08:31 Thankfully for people outside the M25, F4WOnline have confirmed that Comcast is set to air
08:37 All In as a pay-per-view with a $50 price tag, and it'll also be aired in movie theatres
08:42 across the state like a normal AEW pay-per-view.
08:46 Many commentators, though, think this is a business error for two reasons.
08:49 Firstly, because there'll be a second AEW pay-per-view all out the week after, meaning
08:54 fans might have to choose which show they fork out for unless they want to spend $100
08:59 in 8 days.
09:01 And secondly, with such an impressive crowd, there was an argument this should go on free
09:05 TV to get as many eyeballs on AEW looking like a major league promotion as possible,
09:10 treating All In more like an advert than a pay-per-view.
09:14 Not that we're struggling for free AEW content on TV, as the Saturday episode of
09:18 Collision saw an excellent tag title match, and CM Punk finally reveal what's in his
09:23 bag.
09:24 No, not Erick Rowan's spider.
09:25 No, not the WWE Spinner Belt.
09:27 It wasn't even Gwyneth Paltrow's head.
09:30 Fight Club spoiler.
09:31 It was the AEW World Championship he never lost.
09:34 Which he's referring to as the real World Championship of AEW, on the anniversary pretty
09:38 much to the day of Bobby Heenan doing the same angle for Ric Flair in the WWF.
09:44 Reference!
09:45 Punk had spray painted the belt with the new Twitter logo out of respect for Elon Musk's
09:49 branding superpowers.
09:50 That, or it was the Straight Edge X, who knows.
09:53 Ricky Starks, who is currently a heel, became the first challenger setting up a match for
09:57 this Saturday's episode of Collision to be refereed by Ricky the Dragon's Steamboat.
10:02 It'll be a very interesting episode ratings-wise, as it's the first to go head-to-head with
10:07 a WWE Premium Live event of SummerSlam.
10:10 The previous month's Money in the Bank was on earlier in the day because it was in the
10:13 UK.
10:14 MJF, meanwhile, has stuck to his recent babyface guns - not just being gracious in tag title
10:19 defeat and keeping his Adam Cole bromance going, but also by putting over FTR and AEW
10:25 in a post-match promo off-air.
10:27 Perhaps we're building to a face MJF vs heel Punk undisputed title match.
10:31 We'll have a full podcast review of Collision on the WrestleTalk Podcast channel later today,
10:35 so subscribe over there to watch that.
10:37 But in the meantime, who are 10 WWE stars Vince McMahon won't let Triple H push?
10:43 Watch on to find out!
