00:00 I'm so sick of Roman and the Bloodline.
00:02 Worst title run than Triple H's reign of terror.
00:06 Roman is genuinely getting to gender levels of repetitive at this point.
00:18 Breaking News!
00:19 WWE fans hate Roman Reigns.
00:23 Again.
00:25 After they hated him following Summerslam.
00:28 And after WrestleMania 39.
00:31 And the whole five years between 2014 and 2019.
00:40 Roman Reigns and WWE feel like they're taking more breaks than me and Megan when she was
00:44 just trying to figure out where she is in her life right now.
00:48 Which she apparently had to do by going on holiday to Crete with a couple of friends
00:51 and Tommy.
00:52 Why's Tommy there, Megan?
00:53 He's the only guy!
00:55 Roman took a month off after WrestleMania 39, missing Backlash.
00:59 He took two months off after Summerslam, missing Payback and Fastlane.
01:02 And following his defeat of LA Knight at Crown Jewel, Dave Meltzer has confirmed Reigns won't
01:07 be around for the rest of 2023 - where he's set to return for January 2024's Royal Rumble
01:14 build.
01:15 Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso and now LA Knight.
01:19 That's three separate runs in 2023 of Roman beating your favourite wrestler - who should
01:25 have arguably beaten him on the Premium Live event - with the exact same match and Bloodline
01:29 Interference finish.
01:31 To then go on holiday for at least a month.
01:33 As seen at the start of this video, WWE's Reigns booking has turned fans against him.
01:39 Maybe beyond a simple 'boo this heel' way, to a more negative 'I'm actually
01:45 sick of this and I'm going to stop watching' kind of way.
01:48 It's got a vocal portion of the fanbase asking, is Roman's title reign stale?
01:53 And the answer is yes.
01:56 Yes it is.
01:57 Thanks all for watching.
01:58 Make sure to subscribe to this video, see you next time.
02:04 But also maybe not.
02:07 Because business, business, business.
02:09 While building his Crown Jewel Yu-Yu Championship match against Roman, LA Knight used this very
02:13 fan resentment as motivation.
02:15 My assessment is everybody's sick of Reigns.
02:18 He's got about one title defence every three, four months.
02:21 What?
02:22 He's got six matches a year, and we're celebrating the fact that he's been champion
02:25 for 1,200 days?
02:26 You've got to be kidding me.
02:28 This revolution is going to walk in and release everybody from that tyranny with a new WWE
02:34 Champion.
02:35 Yeah, that didn't happen.
02:38 Because Roman reportedly won't wrestle again until January's Royal Rumble, that means
02:42 his 2023 in-ring year has wrapped.
02:46 Meaning we can verify Knight's claim.
02:48 He's wrong.
02:49 Roman defended his title way more in 2023 than every three to four months.
02:54 It's every 2.4 months.
02:55 Listen, there's about to be a lot of numbers here, and you can't go skipping parts of
03:00 the video because that's bad for the YouTube algorithm.
03:01 So to make good, I've included Luke Owen's disembodied head to keep you engaged.
03:06 Roman has wrestled a total of 11 matches for WWE in 2023.
03:10 Four of those were on house shows, where he either beat Rey Mysterio or Sami Zayn, and
03:14 the other seven were on Premium Live event.
03:18 He hasn't wrestled once on TV for the whole year.
03:22 Of the seven Premium Live events, only five of those had his YUMO Championship on the
03:27 line, with Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble, Sami Zayn at Elimination Chamber, Cody Rhodes
03:31 at WrestleMania, Jey Uso at SummerSlam and LA Knight at Crown Jewel.
03:35 Roman's other two Premium Live events were tagging with Solo Sakoa against Kevin Owens
03:39 and Sami Zayn at Night of Champions, and The Usos at Money in the Bank.
03:44 For those Premium Live event matches, Roman wrestled a total of 3 hours 20 minutes in
03:49 2023, of which an estimated 3 hours 17 minutes was taunting the crowd.
03:54 This gives Roman an average 2023 match time of… 28 and a half minutes.
04:00 Only 3 hours 20 minutes of title defending in a whole year?
04:04 Surely that's not enough?
04:06 Well, let's see how it compares to the other World Champion in WWE, and the one over in
04:11 AEW.
04:13 Roman got to a point where he'd won so many of the top belts in WWE, they had to make
04:17 a new one for someone else to have.
04:19 This was the World Consolation Weight Championship that Seth Rollins won on the 27th May.
04:24 In total, Seth has wrestled 83 matches on WWE TV, pay-per-view and live events up to
04:31 Crown Jewel, compared to Roman's 11 for the whole year.
04:34 Ten of those have been on Premium Live events, with eight of them defending his world title
04:38 - which he only won in May - which have happened across TV, every pay-per-view since him winning
04:43 it, and even one special on NXT.
04:45 Those title defences have a total duration of 2 hours, 43 minutes.
04:49 34 minutes fewer than Roman, though, making Seth's average title defence 20 minutes,
04:54 20 seconds long.
04:56 A whole 8 minutes shorter than Reigns.
04:57 But that might be because opposed to walking around the ring and yelling at the crowd,
05:01 Seth actually does moves.
05:03 Interestingly, WWE's booking of Roman is very similar to his World Champion counterpart
05:08 in AEW, MJF, with both promotions having lengthy World Championship reigns to make them mean
05:14 more.
05:15 Max, for instance, just became AEW's longest reigning World Champion in its history.
05:20 MJF has wrestled 20 matches this year, 7 of which were title defences, for an amazing
05:25 total of 4 hours, 16 minutes of in-ring time.
05:29 That gives him an average match time of 36 minutes, 30 seconds.
05:33 In-ring stats wise, MJF is the hardest working World Champion across the two major North
05:39 American promotions.
05:41 But it's a different story when you only take the first half of MJF's year.
05:45 He only wrestled 8 matches total, one of which went 37 seconds.
05:50 Only 4 of those were title defences, lasting 3 hours of in-ring time total.
05:54 A whole third of that being his 65 minute Iron Man match against Bryan Danielson, bringing
05:59 his average title defence match time to 25 minutes, 40 seconds.
06:04 Four minutes shorter than Roman's.
06:06 Of course, this all changed when CM Punk turned himself into a human pipe bomb to explode
06:10 AEW from the inside out.
06:12 More on CM Punk in a bit, CM Punk to WWE confirmed.
06:15 MJF turned babyface in July's Adam Cole storyline, and he's wrestled on an almost
06:20 fortnightly basis since, sometimes twice on the same show.
06:24 So there's an argument which both AEW and WWE have made that an effective way to book
06:29 a heel champion is by having them work a reduced schedule to get them more heat from modern
06:34 crowds.
06:36 Fans want to see fighting babyfaces, meaning the heel champion is defined by doing the
06:41 opposite.
06:42 That only works, however, if your world title dominating heel is building great babyfaces
06:47 for fans to get behind in their absence, and maybe not having Roman around has created
06:52 breathing space for new stars to break out.
06:55 Cody Rhodes, beaten by Reigns at Mania, has gone on to be a proven live ticket sales difference
07:00 maker and is reportedly the top merch seller in WWE for 2023.
07:06 And Jey Uso, beaten by Reigns at SummerSlam, has continued to rise despite his loss, with
07:10 Fightful reporting his merchandise has sold exceptionally well at live events.
07:15 That Roman feud made Jey a main eventer.
07:18 It's right there in his name.
07:20 Main event Jey Uso.
07:21 It's like my nickname, Big Penis Oli Davis, because I definitely have that 'why would
07:26 I keep calling myself that other one?'
07:28 And then there's LA Knight, easily WWE's biggest organic win of 2023.
07:34 In another time, under another head of creative, maybe WWE would've booked Knight to lose
07:39 over and over again and to be put in an emasculating relationship with Eve Torres.
07:43 But Knight was steadily pushed in Roman's post-SummerSlam absence, allowing him to become
07:47 a top merch seller in WWE alongside the likes of Cena, Roman and Stone Cold.
07:54 We know this because it's been reported by the hottest new Dirt Sheet scooper in all
07:59 of wrestling… CM Punk.
08:03 Yes, I will make all stories eventually about CM Punk.
08:07 As you can see in Punk's totally not loaded post on his Instagram comparing WWE and AEW's
08:13 merch sales for 2023, LA Knight is ranked at No. 5 for WWE, only behind Cena, Roman,
08:20 Stone Cold and Cody at No. 1.
08:23 Punk was posting this as a shoutout to his good friend Dan Howson, thanking fans for
08:27 keeping him in AEW's top 10 merch sellers of 2023 despite not being on TV.
08:33 But what Punk was actually doing was showing that Punk remains the top singles merch seller
08:37 in AEW despite only being around for a few months between suspensions and firings.
08:43 "Meeting with Phil Zack and Jack Tunney at the China Club, brother" is a reference
08:47 to BWE's report that Punk has been recently scheduled for a call with a few board members
08:53 in WWE.
08:55 Board members.
08:56 Leaving people backstage to believe he will be returning, with heavily speculation on
09:01 Survivor Series BOARD GAMES in Chicago on the 26th November as the date.
09:07 Fightful is reporting WWE is continuing to deny these talks are happening, which is exactly
09:12 what people planning a surprise CM Punk return would say.
09:16 Although Abu of WrestlePurist refutes this, and SRS claims Abu is well connected for this
09:21 information.
09:22 Along with a potentially returning Randy Orton from out of nowhere, and BWE reporting "a
09:26 couple of surprises" in store, WWE have the luxury of not even needing Roman around
09:32 over the Winter.
09:33 Oh yeah, we were talking about Roman Reigns.
09:37 Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE's merchandise sales are setting
09:42 all time records.
09:45 Merchandise has never been higher.
09:47 Ever.
09:48 Not in the Attitude Era, not in the Hulk Hogan era.
09:51 Never as high as it is now.
09:54 Roman is the catalyst.
09:56 The industry we love and follow isn't called the wrestling let's put on the best artistic
10:00 performance for a reason.
10:01 It's called the wrestling business.
10:04 Where wrestlers and storylines are judged to be successful based on how much their fans
10:08 - or morally dubious kingdoms - pay money for them.
10:11 This is traditionally measured via live event tickets and merchandise sales, which remain
10:15 the real canary in the coal mine for a promotion's up or down trends, but in more modern times
10:20 has come to include long-term overarching TV rights fees, broken down into weekly TV
10:25 ratings and aforementioned deals with morally dubious kingdoms.
10:29 So if fans really are sick of Roman Reigns and the bloodline and the template of Roman's
10:33 speeches always being the same ref distraction interference cheat to win, why has 2023 for
10:40 WWE kept on going from strength to strength to strength in TV ratings, live event tickets
10:47 and merch sales?
10:48 Fightful has reported WWE officials have been very happy with TV ratings this year, specifically
10:53 talking about Roman's show SmackDown and his Bloodline segments.
10:57 Roman's thousand day title celebration episode on the 5th June and the Tribal Court episode
11:02 on July 7th were two of the highest rated SmackDown episodes in three years, sometimes
11:08 topping all of Network TV for the week in certain demos.
11:12 The Crown Jewel go-home episode of SmackDown on the 3rd November pulled in 2.25 million
11:16 viewers, making it the highest for its time slot.
11:19 Not bad for a show taped a week in advance.
11:22 If Roman's repetitive title reign really isn't working, you would expect these numbers
11:26 to be down year on year.
11:29 Using the old adage of a reigns in tide, Romans all ships…
11:34 Um, a Romans, a Roman in…
11:39 A rise…
11:41 A rising Roman lift…
11:43 I'm trying to say a rising tide lifts all boats…
11:52 Going by WWE's 2023 business metrics, live events, merch sales and TV ratings, the elevated
11:58 Roman tide stays high even when he's not around.
12:01 It's all about momentum.
12:03 WWE is, to use a Zoolander quote, so hot right now.
12:06 And Roman Reigns is its blue steel.
12:09 Which is why it isn't just SmackDown that's increased in ratings.
12:13 Both Raw and NXT have been up consistently throughout 2023 on their 2022 numbers, and
12:18 a TV viewership landscape where everyone else is in decline.
12:21 AEW, for instance, has seen its 2023 Dynamite and Rampage viewership mostly down on the
12:27 same time in 2022.
12:29 The same pattern can be seen in WWE's house show ticket sales, which are events that aren't
12:35 broadcast on TV.
12:36 The Hollywood Reporter writes WWE has set all-time attendance figures in 57 cities across
12:41 the world in the first half of 2023.
12:45 This is an incredible turnaround from WWE's spiralling house show business in 2019, and
12:50 its total shutdown in the pandemic.
12:52 Roman Reigns has only wrestled on four of these live events this year, so his lack of
12:57 appearances don't appear to be a negative factor.
13:00 Yes, a portion of fans, many of them you and I, have grown bored of Reigns never being
13:04 around.
13:05 And when he is, it's the same repetitive, uncreative match plus interference finish
13:10 we've had for several years.
13:11 But maybe what works for a wrestling hot period for mainstream casual fans is star power.
13:18 Which Roman has more of than anyone else currently active.
13:22 And not overexposing that star power is a key to preserving it.
13:26 So expect WWE to keep riding Roman's rising tide.
13:30 Paul Heyman said after WrestleMania 39 that we're only in the bottom of the third inning.
13:35 That makes it near a nine year long story.
13:38 Start mentally preparing yourself for Cody not winning at WrestleMania 40 either.
13:43 But what do you think?
13:44 Is Roman Reigns' title reign actually bad for WWE?
13:47 Tell me!
13:48 Of course it is!
13:49 I can't take Jimmy interfering anymore, Oli!
13:51 I can't do it!
13:53 In the comments down below.
13:54 And also let me know what you think about this more deep dive into a wrestling news
13:57 story format too.
13:58 As I tried out something a little different today.
14:00 If you liked it, share it around.
14:02 Roman's done all bad, though.
14:03 He's had some great rivalries.
14:05 Go watch our countdown of 10 of the best ones on partsFUNknown.
