00:03 - The Stellar Awards are one of gospel's biggest nights
00:06 and definitely the biggest award show of the genre.
00:09 So I sat down with one of the hosts of this year's show
00:11 to talk about what we can expect when we tune in.
00:14 What's up Kern County, it's Ryan Nelson
00:15 and you are watching Kern Living.
00:17 On today's episode, we have a gospel icon.
00:20 I say he's a legend,
00:22 but he goes by the name of Jonathan McReynolds.
00:24 Jonathan, how are you?
00:25 - I'm good, brother.
00:26 How you feeling, man?
00:27 - I'm doing great because we're here
00:28 and we're talking about the Stellar Awards.
00:30 Now this is a show that I've been seeing for years
00:32 and a ton of our viewers have watched it as well.
00:34 And you are one of the hosts this year.
00:37 How does it feel to host such a big award show?
00:39 - I know some legends and I'm not one of those.
00:42 And so it was an honor to hang out with them and see them.
00:47 It is a big family reunion for us.
00:49 You know, we all have our careers
00:51 and we go different places.
00:52 And so this is an opportunity
00:53 that we all kind of come together.
00:55 You have Kirk, Israel, Ty, Tasha, Travis,
01:00 everybody in one building.
01:02 And it's always just an amazing experience.
01:04 Then you got Shirley Caesar, Pastor Shirley Caesar somewhere
01:08 and Dr. Bobby Jones somewhere.
01:10 And so it's just always just a wonderful occasion.
01:13 And it was my absolute honor to host it.
01:15 I was one of my best friends in the world,
01:18 Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
01:19 It was really fun and just an incredible night all together.
01:23 - Absolutely.
01:24 What can we expect from you and Tasha together?
01:26 - Oh, we're gonna, well, first of all,
01:27 everybody could tell that we were friends.
01:30 'Cause I mean, just the way we're talking to each other
01:32 and some of the jokes that we're telling,
01:34 you know, us even singing together a little bit,
01:38 you know, just having fun.
01:39 It's gonna be fun.
01:40 Make sure y'all watch it.
01:41 Comedy, great singing.
01:43 And in my opinion,
01:45 we were like some of the best dressed hosts
01:48 Stellas has ever had.
01:50 - Woo, okay.
01:51 Now that's saying a lot.
01:52 Recently on your social media,
01:54 I saw that you had a picture with Israel.
01:56 I'm gonna lift it up 'cause you can't really see too well.
01:58 Israel, Kirk Franklin, Ty Trigger.
02:00 Wouldn't you like to just hang out
02:01 with some of these greats in the gospel?
02:04 - Yeah, man, it's an honor.
02:06 You know, in gospel and in music at large,
02:10 you know, these are some legends.
02:11 And, you know, there's always a little bit
02:15 of imposter syndrome that a lot of us artists have.
02:18 And it's kind of mind boggling
02:22 when you get accepted into the family
02:26 and even into like the inner circle of these people
02:29 that you have called legends.
02:32 You know what I'm saying?
02:32 You think of as people who,
02:34 they're the ones who created music.
02:36 By the time I got born,
02:38 these are the people that already decided
02:40 what music was gonna be.
02:42 And I had to learn how to be them first
02:43 before I could ever learn how to be myself as a musician.
02:47 And so that's been such an honor to hang with them,
02:50 to know them, to text them,
02:52 to talk to them.
02:53 I've had the honor of not just them,
02:55 but I mean, you got to think,
02:56 you got a Pimberlail out there,
02:57 you got a Smokey Norfell out there,
02:59 you have Stevie Wonder out there,
03:00 you have, you know, India,
03:03 you have so many people out there,
03:06 Tom and people that taught me music.
03:08 Before I decided to make Jonathan McReynolds type music,
03:13 they taught me music, period.
03:15 And so it's just such an honor, man,
03:16 just to see them, to know them,
03:19 and to join in the triumph
03:22 and honestly the fight of being an artist,
03:25 being an artist type.
03:27 And, you know, all of that is just incredible.
03:29 And it's just a family to have all those brothers around.
