Nearly a million new homes will be built in southeast Queensland under a plan to accommodate a rapidly growing population. With six million people forecast to live in the region by 20-46 the state governments released its blueprint for unlocking housing supply. It means councils will have to amend their planning laws but not everyone's on board.

00:00 Building up, not out. The State Government wants 900,000 new homes built over the next
00:07 20 years. The draft South East Queensland Regional Plan aims to address the region's
00:13 booming population, expected to be home to more than 2 million new residents by 2046.
00:20 What we can't do is stop people moving here. And we can't stop the trend to smaller
00:25 households. We can't stop our ageing population. So we need to plan for all of those things.
00:32 To reach the target, 209,000 homes would be built in Brisbane alone, 107,000 in Ipswich
00:40 and 108,000 in Logan. Further afield, more than 150,000 homes are planned for the Gold
00:48 Coast, 120,000 in Moreton Bay and 80,000 on the Sunshine Coast. Fatini Fernandes has just
00:56 moved there. We purchased a place in Bligh Bligh to give our kids a better life. But
01:01 she says greater infrastructure will be critical. They would have to build better roads here.
01:07 One in five of the new builds are pegged to be affordable or social housing. 70% of the
01:13 new homes would be built in already developed urban areas, like here at Kirilpa Precinct.
01:20 Despite community opposition, the State Government has just announced it will approve plans to
01:25 remove height limits. Buildings here could reach up to 90 storeys. Other prestigious
01:32 areas also sure to face community backlash to increasing density. So we will be fighting
01:37 tooth and nail for as long as it takes to ensure that our height limits remain the same.
01:43 A final plan is due by the end of the year.
