00:15 I'm joined as always by Dave Hepburn. Dave, how are you doing? You all right?
00:18 Good morning, Graeme. Doing well. Yes, I'm in Edinburgh right now and the sun's come
00:21 out for the first time in about two days. So everything's looking a bit brighter. It's
00:26 good. It's good.
00:27 That intro, by the way, is ingrained in my head. I say it just randomly at times during
00:31 the day. I don't know if anyone noticed that.
00:33 You do say it exactly the same time every time. It's very impressive. It's very professional.
00:36 You're always professional.
00:38 Taglines. What can I say? It's not a bigger week as it was last week with Barbie and Oppenheimer,
00:46 admittedly, but I think we're coming up to that time where the good stuff's coming because
00:51 summer's kind of dying off, even though the sun is out even in Glasgow today. We are starting
00:56 to see that die down a little bit and then people want to go in the cinema. So people
01:00 tend to go for the just after summer blockbusters and then leading up to sort of September time,
01:06 October time, you get your horrors and yada, yada, yada. So it's great.
01:09 However, we're in, I think it came out in August technically because, or maybe, no,
01:13 it was July, end of July. There is a horror film that's came out this week. And as always,
01:18 we are going to do reviews of films we've seen this week. Now, the film we're going
01:21 to talk about, if you're interested, is going to be Talk to Me. But before we do, Dave,
01:25 have you seen anything else at the cinema?
01:28 Well, not really, because I don't think anyone has, because there's Barbie and Oppenheimer
01:32 who have taken over every single screen, and that's great. There's no problem with that.
01:36 But who's going to release a film at the same time as Barbie and Oppenheimer? You're not
01:40 going to get many bums on seats. So what I did do is I went to see Barbie again for the
01:45 second time, and I can review it very, very shortly for a second viewing. So I got different
01:51 things out of it the second time around. I tend to go into films now without reading
01:54 any reviews, which may be bad of me, considering I work for a newspaper. But I like to know
01:59 nothing about films, so I read nothing about Barbie beforehand, although I realise that
02:02 it's had mixed reactions and certain controversial opinions from controversial people. So after
02:08 I'd seen it for the first time, I read everything about it, and I read what Piers Morgan was
02:12 saying about it, and what all of the lunatic fringes on either side of the political spectrum
02:18 were saying about it. And going back to see it after reading all of those is quite an
02:22 interesting experience, because all the way through, you're kind of ticking things off,
02:25 where you're going, "No, that kind of review's wrong, just wrong. I mean, it isn't a matter
02:29 of opinion. It's wrong because this is what Greta Gerwig has done here." And you say,
02:32 "Well, she did this," which means that is not the case. You're wrong, Piers Morgan.
02:36 You're wrong about it just being a toy advert. You're wrong about it being a feminist diatribe.
02:40 These things just aren't true because Greta Gerwig is too clever for that. I think she's
02:44 worked out all of the things that would be said about it negatively in advance, and I
02:48 think she's put things into the film to really make sure that none of those hold any water.
02:54 And I think it's a far cleverer film than I realised the first time, and it's definitely
02:58 worth a second view, as I think Will Oppenheimer and Lou Ford seem to be, which I might do
03:03 this week too. But there's very little out of the cinema, and good for Talk To Me for
03:07 coming out at this time, because it's this counter-programming that they talk about,
03:12 that they say, "Well, even though there's big films out in the cinema," because you
03:16 still want Mission Impossible out in the cinema too, so there's three massive blockbusters,
03:19 but what if, A, you've seen all of those and you want to see something different, or you're
03:23 one of the people who just are not interested in seeing these big blockbusters, what do
03:27 you do? You put a horror film out, seems to have done the job, so it's doing very good
03:30 box office, which again is great to see. Like we keep on saying, fantastic to see people
03:35 going to cinema, and even with these big films out, there's still room for other films in
03:39 cinema. So I feel more people are going to cinema, they're enjoying the cinema, they
03:43 might not have been back for a wee while. They've gone to see Barbie, they've gone
03:45 to see Oppenheimer, going, "Wait a second, going to cinema's great, we've forgotten
03:48 how much fun it is going to cinema. We're going to get a cinema card, we're going to
03:52 get that, we're going to go to cinema more." So I think genuinely, the whole Barbie/Oppenheimer
03:57 thing will actually benefit other films and benefit cinemas, and I think it's looking
04:02 like it's in route to health now, which is great news for us, and for cinemas, and for
04:05 everyone else.
04:06 Yeah, I 100% agree, and I think what's interesting is, look, I know a lot of people go, "Oh,
04:11 rotten tomatoes, brrr." But I think it's worth its salt. You've got your reviews on
04:17 there, and you've also got on top of that, you've got things like the audience reviews,
04:21 and sometimes they can differ so much, and I think that sort of speaks volumes, I think
04:24 that's really good, it's something that I really like. And all those three films, so
04:29 Barbie's on 90% at the moment, then you've got Talk To Me's on 95%, and Oppenheimer's
04:35 on 96%, which, however way you swing it, means that there's three films in the cinema right
04:41 now that are borderline perfect across the board from audiences and also critics.
04:47 I think Mission Impossible will be up there as well, and I'm not sure exactly what the
04:51 rating is, but I expect it to be high 80s at the very least, if not just edging into
04:55 90s, because I've read very, very few bad reviews of Mission Impossible. So, excepting
05:01 Indiana Jones and Hunker Junker, whatever it's called, I mean, all these films have
05:05 really been hitting hard, hitting well, critically and commercially.
05:09 I've just checked for you, 96%, so there's actually four films.
05:13 So four over 90 in the cinema at the same time, when was the last time that happened?
05:16 Can't be for a long, long time, so yeah, good news.
05:19 Has it ever happened? Because I remember like, when Jurassic Park and all that came out,
05:23 but was there anyone else with it at the same time?
05:25 I don't know, I can't remember that many blockbusters coming out at the same time, because, I mean,
05:30 even Indiana Jones, a lot of people went to see Indiana Jones, that was only like three
05:33 weeks before these, so in the space of a month, really big films coming out.
05:38 And like I say, you'd have thought it might have been a slightly silly tactic, and they
05:42 should have maybe left it a little bit later to get more customers for any one of them,
05:46 but it seems to have worked, and it seems to be a critical mass of films getting people
05:51 into big screens and off their couches, because none of them can be streamed, which is also
05:54 the key thing as well, isn't it? So none of these are Netflix films, none of these have
05:58 done a deal with Apple or anything like this, and can be seen.
06:01 You can only see them on the big screen, otherwise you're going to have to wait for ages and
06:05 ages and ages.
06:06 Proper cinema. And I think it's been really good, like I've been really pleased, like
06:09 it's, I'm excited whenever I go to the cinema, so, but I'm a bit different with that, and
06:13 I think we're a bit different, hence why we have done this for about 4,000 episodes.
06:19 But there was an added excitement, like going to see Bobby Oppenheimer, and even talk to
06:23 me, like, I mean, I was meant to go see it on the Friday, I've got to be honest, didn't
06:28 really feel up for it from a mental perspective, so I didn't bother going to see it, and I
06:33 went to see it on the Sunday.
06:34 But I remember the Tuesday, it was actually the unlimited secret screening, and that really
06:38 frustrated me that I didn't bother going to the cinema for a secret screening, but does
06:42 that mean that next time there's a secret screening, I might actually go? Do you know
06:46 what I mean? Like, that kind of thing is like, I don't know, it feels like it's invigorated
06:51 stuff a little bit. I find the whole discussion around Bobby being anti-man, and I know everyone
06:59 has their own opinion and subjectivism and stuff, but like, I don't know if you can have
07:02 that opinion, because it's just not.
07:04 No, your death is, and I actually watched the film again, genuinely, the way Ken and
07:08 the Kens are treated, I mean, she makes it very clear, without going into too much, that
07:13 basically at the start of the film, Ken is treated awfully, he is treated very, very
07:17 badly, and at the start of the film, Bobby's almost the baddie at the start of the film,
07:20 and by the end of the film, she admits that she was treating Ken very badly, so one gender
07:25 was treating the other badly, but it was the opposite way round from the same world, basically
07:31 from our world, and then they made their way to a better position by the end of the film.
07:37 There's actually nothing controversial or anti-man about that, and it's a very odd stance
07:41 to take, and I do think the majority of people who have that opinion have not seen the film,
07:46 I think that they've seen a clip of the film. It's like one of these things, I've seen the
07:49 trailer and I think it's anti-man, and you go, well, you can't determine that from the
07:52 trailer, you have to go and see the film, but most of them haven't.
07:55 And if it is, is that a bad thing?
07:58 Well, I mean, no, not necessarily, not everything has to be pro-man or treat men with equality,
08:05 you can have a funny film that doesn't, however this doesn't, and that's the thing, you couldn't
08:09 criticise it for it, if there's any argument, there's no intellectual argument that it is
08:13 anti-man in any way, shape or form.
08:15 There is bits that are funny, like the bit where he said he didn't even like the patriarchy
08:19 when he found out it wasn't about horses, men and their horses, but if people are getting
08:25 offended by that, I mean, come on, how thin is your skin?
08:28 It's people wanting to be offended, and they've decided to latch onto this, and they've become
08:32 offended by it. And some people are taking offence at Oppenheimer now as well, people
08:36 just like taking offence at stuff, but it's best to ignore them, I think, and not give
08:39 them any more alternate publicity, which is why actually we shouldn't even be talking
08:43 about it, and I started this, and I shouldn't even talk about these people, who needs to
08:46 hear the words 'Piers Morgan' anywhere? Nobody.
08:50 Yeah, yeah.
08:52 My fault.
08:53 As a trainee journalist, and now as a fully formed one, I don't mind having a controversial
08:57 opinion, he is the least inspirational journalist I've ever come across in my life, and I don't
09:03 really care if he's offended by that, which he probably will be, because he probably thinks
09:07 he's on the walk leftist, loving Barbie, pink wearing, I don't know, who cares? I'm not,
09:14 for the record. But rant over, we're here to talk about films, not people that aren't
09:19 in films, good films. Talk to me, about 'Talk to Me'.
09:24 Yes, I will talk to you about 'Talk to Me', you see, this was always going to be confusing,
09:29 wasn't it? Well, 'Talk to Me', for those who don't know, it's a film that, if you think
09:33 about the plot, it's about teenagers getting possessed by dead people via a very kind of
09:41 weird thing where somebody, a clairvoyant's hand has been sealed in ceramics, and if you
09:49 shake the hand and say 'Talk to Me', you see the dead spirits, you see the dead person.
09:55 They don't shake it like all of them.
09:57 Well, they kind of, no, they do shake it, they kind of shake it like this.
10:01 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
10:08 Oh, talk to me, mate, mate, talk to me!
10:11 What I'm saying is that the set up is clunky at best, I mean it really is.
10:16 I think it's good. No, I think it's good.
10:18 Yeah, I don't know, where's, yeah.
10:20 Because it's got like levels that, look, we're going to get into it here, it's got like levels that have been elevated, right?
10:25 Yeah.
10:26 Like, in that elevated horror.
10:28 Thank you very much, Scream.
10:30 But I think at the same time, like, when it comes to the actual film itself, I thought it was clever having the idea of like an embalmed hand.
10:37 Like, it's kind of old school practical special effects, and I like the fact that, because when they touch the hand, for people who haven't seen it,
10:44 and we'll not give it away, and I think it's quite hard to, whilst we can also explain a lot of the stuff.
10:48 Yes.
10:49 And if you've seen the trailer, which you most likely have.
10:51 It's in the trailer, yeah.
10:52 Yeah, when they touch hands, they kind of go, and go backwards, and they make this kind of gargling noise,
10:58 and there's a moment where you're like, are they going to choke?
11:01 And it happens every time where people go, are they going to choke?
11:04 And that adds extra suspense to it.
11:07 I think it's very much down the line, you know, of, and this is big praise for, I mean, we've got to remember,
11:13 this film's made by two people called Raka Raka, who are big YouTubers.
11:17 Yeah, they're guys called Danny and Michael Philippus, who I've not heard of yet.
11:22 Yeah, because I'm not a YouTuber guy, and it is quite interesting, so I only found out that it was done by YouTubers.
11:28 So for those who don't know the basic plot, it's about a group of kids who basically get addicted to letting dead people into their bodies,
11:35 and they get a kind of high from it, and even though the experience is unpleasant, afterwards they feel kind of giddy with excitement,
11:41 and, you know, it's basically like a drug.
11:44 It's basically like a drug for them.
11:45 So it is, like you say, it is a kind of elevated horror, which is kind of about addiction.
11:48 It's also about grief, because one of the kids has lost their mother in tragic circumstances,
11:55 and ends up speaking to somebody who may or may not be her mother via a kid who's taken this drug/become possessed.
12:03 So it's interesting that it is made by YouTubers, and actually when you realize that afterwards, it makes sense,
12:08 because it does have that kind of feeling of that.
12:11 There's lots of bits of people sharing videos, which means that people want to get involved in it,
12:17 and that's how the protagonist ends up going to a party.
12:20 She sees this stuff happening on YouTube, and it's interesting.
12:23 I was looking into it, and apparently there's a trend with young people,
12:27 I'm going to sound very old here, but young people, teenagers,
12:30 taking videos of their friends having bad trips on psychedelic drugs, and putting it up online,
12:37 which just sounds the most horrific thing ever.
12:39 Why would kids want to do this?
12:41 So I was watching it going, this is a bit far-fetched.
12:43 Why would you do this to your friends?
12:45 Why would you want to make idiots of them while they're having an experience which could be really, really dangerous for their health?
12:51 But apparently kids actually do this stuff.
12:53 - Yeah, I mean... - Yeah, it's remarkable.
12:56 We're going very, very deep here, but I believe there was a trend of people filming themselves after they'd taken,
13:03 I won't name the drug, but a very out-there drug, and they were filming themselves,
13:08 and that became a bit of a trend.
13:09 So there is a link to it, because the YouTubers that have made it are called, their YouTube name is RakaRaka.
13:16 Never heard of them, but again, I'm not out of the YouTube world.
13:19 I have my own YouTube channel, but I'm not in the YouTube world.
13:23 I don't know, to me, Jake Paul was a boxer before he was a YouTuber, if that makes sense.
13:27 I know who KSI is, because he has a drink that's actually quite nice.
13:31 I'm not going to name his name.
13:34 But I've never heard of them, but they have over a million followers or something,
13:40 so they've obviously got a decent backing.
13:42 But I quite like that, it's a YouTuber, you know.
13:44 I know a lot of people say content creation and stuff like that is damaging real filmmaking and stuff like that,
13:51 but I thought it was really fresh.
13:52 I thought the take on it was fresh.
13:54 I agree.
13:55 The thing is that old people like KSI make it, "Oh, YouTubers, blah-di-blah-di-blah."
13:59 The fact is that there's always been a history of people who made adverts and music videos
14:05 ending up basically making films.
14:07 So you look at all of the old-school directors who've done that.
14:11 Ridley Scott started off doing that, as did his brother.
14:14 So it's kind of the new version of making music videos.
14:17 Who makes music videos anymore?
14:18 So people do YouTube instead, and that's how funders for films consider calling cards.
14:24 It's obviously worked very well here, because it's a really, really entertaining film
14:27 and I think we both recommend anybody sees, just as long as you've got a relatively strong stomach.
14:32 It's got some fairly gory bits, and not to give away the really brutal scenes,
14:36 because that would spoil it, particularly the bit with the dog.
14:39 Oh, man.
14:42 That, oh my God, that scene.
14:46 It's quite strong.
14:47 It's quite something.
14:48 It's unlike anything I've seen before, I think.
14:50 And it's gore.
14:53 I'm not going to give away the scene.
14:55 And it's not about a dog dying or anything like that, so don't be put off if you worry about scenes.
14:59 I don't like seeing things like that either.
15:01 It looks fine.
15:02 I mean, actually, the dog seems to have rather a nice time.
15:04 Yeah.
15:09 But it's one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a cinema.
15:12 I went to see it with Ashley, and Ashley loved it, loved it even more than I did.
15:16 And at that moment, I looked at Ashley like that, and Ashley was going.
15:22 Yes.
15:24 Oddly, it's actually -- when you've seen the film, or if you've seen the film, you'll understand that's actually not a gruesome horror thing.
15:32 It's just random filmmaking that actually makes you feel really uncomfortable and adds to the suspense.
15:37 It does.
15:38 And the intense anxiety about it.
15:41 Yeah, yeah, because some of the things that are said, again, I'm not giving away, but people kind of lose control of what their inhibitions would be
15:48 and end up speaking truths that they would not otherwise want to speak, which is then amplified by the fact that it's being videoed
15:55 and is available for anybody to see online, which did actually make me feel very, very disturbed.
15:59 So I was just thinking about the things that I've done that I would not want to be videoed and broadcast to millions around the world,
16:04 including this very vodcast.
16:09 Apparently now it's on TV as well.
16:11 It's on TV as well, yeah.
16:13 I went, "Oh, I want to get my hair cut," the other day.
16:15 This is revealing off ever so slightly. People can tell my hair's a bit shorter.
16:19 And when I walked in, the guy went, "I saw you on the telly the other day."
16:23 It was this.
16:24 We're on, I believe it's Shots TV now.
16:27 Shots TV, yes.
16:29 So if you want to watch it on a bigger screen, which I wouldn't recommend because it's me and Dave.
16:32 Massive, like 52-inch screen, that's what you want.
16:36 Don't do that. Don't watch us big, our big silly faces on a big screen.
16:39 Just watch it on a small screen, it's fine. Do it on your phone, which is a lot easier way.
16:43 But yes, we are on, we're TV stars is what we're saying, basically.
16:48 We are YouTubers now.
16:52 But Talk Me was good. I loved it.
16:54 I thought it was a great, great film.
16:57 I give it a nine out of ten.
16:59 I would agree.
17:00 I think you can tell by the way that we're speaking.
17:02 It's like we're excited about it.
17:06 Like we're getting giddy and excitable and talking about it.
17:09 And it will not surprise anyone that I'm like an absolute horror nut.
17:13 And I was quite excited beforehand because obviously I wrote about when it was coming out and stuff like that.
17:18 You know, the article of when it was released, what it was about.
17:21 And I've seen like a lot of reviews from, because it was at Sundance Festival,
17:26 which is where there was a bidding war between Warner Brothers, I think, and A24.
17:32 And that was an A24 film, but it was released by Altitude, I think, in the UK.
17:37 However, distributed, sorry, by Altitude.
17:40 But it is like an A24 film, basically, which is obviously big.
17:43 But I think there was a big bidding war after how well it went down at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
17:50 So I was quite excited about it.
17:52 And then I seen one person had commented that it was, what did they say again?
17:56 They said that it was the scariest horror movie of the last decade.
18:00 Now, that's what our topic of conversation is today.
18:03 Long story short is Talk Me is really good.
18:05 Whether you're a horror fan or whether you're not, I think it will offer a lot of questions,
18:09 a lot of intrigue, a lot of excitement.
18:11 It will gross you out a bit.
18:13 It will also make you excited.
18:14 It will make you jump.
18:15 It's a great film.
18:17 But the statement being it was the scariest horror film of the last decade.
18:21 Now, we've wrote an article on this.

18:31 horror fan, great journalist, great person, has also done, you know, 200 words or so
18:37 on whether this is the scariest movie of the last decade.

18:47 It's a big, big statement.
18:49 Now, that was in my mind when I came out of the picture and when I went into the picture.
18:57 And when I left, I couldn't say it wasn't.
19:00 I'll give more of my opinion on it.
19:03 I couldn't say it wasn't.
19:06 But I've decided it's not.
19:08 [Laughter]
19:10 But that's such high praise because of that.
19:14 But Dave, what we're going to do is first and foremost I want your opinion on if it
19:18 is the scariest film of the last decade and if not, how far away it is.
19:23 And then we're going to pick our top three scariest films of the last decade for Horrorhead.
19:28 So if you want to go see Talk to Me and then you think I want something scarier, that if
19:32 we do think there's things that are scarier than it, Dave, we can also recommend what
19:36 they are.
19:37 >> Yes.
19:38 >> So firstly, is it the scariest horror film of the last decade?
19:42 If not, how far away is it from being that?
19:45 >> Well, you see, I did not find it scary.
19:47 I think a lot of horror is kind of subjective and I think it's down to taste and also what
19:50 you're scared of.
19:51 People are scared of different things.
19:52 I mean, some people could be afraid of being buried alive.
19:55 And a very poor film about being buried alive will still be about someone being buried alive
19:59 and it will be very scary to people.
20:01 I think, and as some of you were talking about before, is that I think there's -- you can
20:05 have a very good horror film that isn't necessarily scary.
20:08 I don't think all horror films have to be scary.
20:11 I think maybe the best ones are perhaps.
20:14 I think this is a really, really good horror film.
20:17 But for me it's not.
20:18 I mean, I was looking at the horror films the last ten years and we've talked about
20:21 this before as well, how many great horror films there have been in the last ten years.
20:25 And actually one or two of my choices, ones that came close, are almost ten years old
20:29 now.
20:30 Some are about 11 or 12 years old.
20:32 But there's an embarrassment of riches there.
20:34 I would not put this in the top 40, believe it or not, of scariest.
20:39 Now, is it in my opinion one of the top ten or 15 best horror films?
20:44 I think it is.
20:45 It's just that it didn't personally scare me.
20:47 Like I didn't have nightmares.
20:48 I didn't come out of the cinema being disturbed.
20:50 Particularly there were some scenes that ghosted me out, slightly freaked me out.
20:54 But I wasn't going to have nightmares about it.
20:56 And I do sometimes have nightmares about horror films.
20:58 And those do tend to be the best ones.
21:00 There are also horror films that I come out of and go, that was amazing, that was terrifying.
21:04 I never want to see that again.
21:06 That was genuinely scary.
21:07 And I didn't even maybe even enjoy it that much because it was so scary.
21:11 And this I will definitely watch again.
21:13 Like I am looking forward to seeing it again because I think there's a lot going on there
21:16 which I'll see for a second time.
21:18 And I think it will bear up to repeated viewing.
21:20 So, no, for me, it's not even close.
21:23 But again, I would say part of that is that I'm not really freaked out by the kind of
21:28 possession-y, ghost-y type things so much, I don't think.
21:33 And also I thought it was funny enough.
21:36 Because it is very funny as well, which we've not mentioned.
21:38 But it is a very funny film.
21:40 And I think the moments of comedy kind of punctured for me any kind of building dread.
21:46 And again, that isn't a bad thing.
21:48 I think a lot of people like that.
21:50 A lot of people don't want to be stressed out for a film.
21:52 And I didn't find it stressful at all because it was quite funny.
21:54 And it was a bit silly as well.
21:56 And some of the practical effects, while good, I found quite funny as well.
22:00 Because there's lots of really gory stuff of bits hanging out.
22:04 And I found that kind of funnier rather than scarier.
22:08 But again, I don't think it matters.
22:10 A lot of my favourite horror films don't scare me.
22:12 Something like Phantasm doesn't scare me.
22:14 Something like Original Fear doesn't scare me.
22:16 It's just I think a really good horror film.
22:18 So not for me, but I still think it's a great film.
22:21 But not as scary as the ones we're going to talk about.
22:24 >> You don't know I'm not putting it in my top three?
22:28 >> Because -- oh, you might do, actually.
22:30 You said it isn't the scariest.
22:32 It could be in your top three.
22:34 Am I right enough, actually?
22:36 Is it in your top three?
22:38 >> Yes.
22:40 >> It is!
22:42 It is the job for you.
22:44 >> I'll explain why.
22:46 It's going to go second, right?
22:48 So it's a bit weird.
22:50 But the reason why is -- so Elevated Horror for me can be particularly scary.
22:58 So without going too deep into it, I don't think I'm in a minority of people here to say that I have quite bad anxiety.
23:04 Which is not great.
23:06 So I think Elevated Horror does connect to stuff like anxiety, grief, depression.
23:10 It concentrates on all those kind of things.
23:12 Midsomers is a big one.

24:34 Whether she killed herself or whether she didn't.
24:36 And that tortures the girl quite a bit.
24:38 But it makes her kind of weird to her peers.
24:40 And there's a bit at the start where they say, like, oh, why do you have to invite her?
24:42 She's so weird.
24:44 And then when she offers to touch the hand, they're like, oh, hey, this idiot wants to do it because no one really likes her.
24:46 So there's even the element of, like, you know, I feel like an outsider.
24:48 I feel like a bit of a loner.

25:36 Sometimes I can get away with the gory stuff and it's fine.

25:44 And even though it's very unlikely to happen in the way that it happens in the movie, it is possible for someone to go absolutely manic.
