00:00 Donors and staff at Leeds Donor Centre celebrated 20 years of saving lives on
00:05 Thursday the 3rd of August to mark the milestone anniversary of the day that
00:09 the Hedro Centre first opened its doors. NHS Blood and Transplant hosted a day of
00:15 celebrations as a special thank you to the city's loyal donors and dedicated
00:19 donor centre team for saving thousands of lives. Among those joining the
00:23 celebrations was donor Peter Ainsworth who recently made his 119th donation.
00:29 Salome Mee-Lin from Leeds depends on blood donors to stay alive as she has
00:34 sickle cell, an inherited blood disorder that can cause agonising crisis episodes
00:39 and serious or fatal long-term complications including organ damage and
00:43 strokes. The centre urgently needs more black donors as they are more likely to
00:48 have the blood type needed to treat the increasing number of patients suffering
00:52 from sickle cell disease.
