00:00 Simone Biles is back in action.
00:03 The all-star athlete returned to gymnastics competitively on Saturday, and she made quite
00:08 the triumphant return at the Core Hydration Classic.
00:12 Simone scored first place in the all-around, floor routine, vault, and balance beam, and
00:17 finished third on the uneven bars.
00:19 The event, which was the qualifying competition for the 2023 U.S. Gymnastics Championships,
00:24 marked the first time Simone has competed since the Tokyo Olympics.
00:29 The seven-time medalist withdrew from the individual all-around final mid-event at the
00:33 Tokyo Olympics in June 2021, ending her chance to defend her title.
00:39 She later explained that she stepped away to focus on her mental health.
00:43 Since then, Simone has grown in her personal life, becoming an ambassador for mental health
00:47 awareness and getting married to her longtime love, NFL player Jonathan Owens, in May.
00:52 In April 2022, Access Hollywood's Scott Evans caught up with Simone, and she gushed about
00:57 wedding plans.
01:00 What do you want people to know about where you and him are now?
01:22 How you're feeling about getting ready for this big day?
01:24 Yeah, I feel like so far, like the wedding process has been pretty seamless, but now
01:30 it's getting towards like the stressful part.
01:33 I've already picked out like my dresses and stuff and I thought that was going to be-
01:36 Wait, you picked out the dresses?
01:37 Yes.
01:38 I picked them out so they're in production.
01:39 Okay, what is it like when you put it on?
01:41 You said it was perfection?
01:42 No, they're in production right now.
01:45 Okay, okay, okay.
01:47 So when you picked it out, like did you know?
01:49 Like how did you, tell me about the process.
01:50 Like if you're saying it's in production, have you put it on?
01:53 It was like, whenever I met Jonathan, like you had a feeling and you just went with your
01:59 gut and whenever I tried on the dress, like I had my maid of honor and my mom there with
02:05 me and we just all started bawling.
02:08 Like I just knew, like as soon as I saw myself, I just knew.
02:12 Really?
02:13 Yeah.
02:14 Everybody said it was a feeling, but I just never believed that stuff.
02:18 And then it happened.
02:19 I'm like, oh God.
02:20 This is the feeling.
02:21 This is, I think this is the feeling.
02:28 What was your mom's reaction?
02:29 How did she, what did she say?
02:30 Oh, she cried.
02:31 So did my maid of honor.
02:33 And that's just how we knew.
02:34 Yeah.
02:35 That's, I mean, I mean, if you need a, you can't ask for a better signal or sign than
02:39 that.
02:40 Right.
02:41 Now, what do you think?
02:42 Are you going to go big wedding?
02:43 You're going to go small, something intimate?
02:44 Are you going to, would you two end up eloping?
02:48 Would you be the two that would be like, no, I know we made all these plans.
02:51 Because we want to share our love that we have for each other with the people that we
02:55 also love.
02:56 So I think it'll be a good medium, small, medium.
03:00 I don't know.
03:01 Like it's one 20.
03:02 I don't think that's too big or too small.
03:04 I think it's a good size.
03:05 I think one 20 is a good size.
03:07 I mean, it's not, it's not a tiny wedding, but it was also not like, you know, we've
03:10 seen some right.
03:11 Exactly.
03:12 It's an area.
03:13 Cause I know my best friend, she's getting married and she has 14 groomsmen, 14 bridesmaid.
03:19 And I'm just like, you guys are insane.
03:21 What?
03:22 Yeah.
03:23 The bridal party is like 26 people.
03:25 Now here's my question.
03:27 When you have a best friend, that's also getting married around the same time.
03:31 Are you in each other's weddings?
03:32 Like does it, does that happen?
03:34 Or do you just, do you just attend like, nah girl, you good.
03:38 No, we're definitely in each other's weddings.
03:42 And we almost have the same timeline too of the dates.
03:46 So there'll be back to back, which is kind of crazy.
03:49 Short months, but kind of back to back, but most of our bridesmaids are the same.
03:53 So that's a plus.
03:54 So I think we're just going to do a combined bachelorette and all of that stuff.
03:58 Cause we have the same people.
04:00 So that is actually a combined bachelorette.
04:03 That's going to be fun.
04:04 That is going to be a whole lot of fun.
04:07 Listen, I, I want to know, um, and I want to respect your privacy, but I, I am, I want
04:14 to know what it was about Jonathan that you were like, I think you're my person.
04:20 You know what I mean?
04:21 We all watched him support you, um, uh, and competition.
04:25 We all watched him be this amazing partner to you on the sideline, right.
04:30 Um, from an audience, but like for you, like, what was the thing that you were like, I think
04:35 this is, he's the one.
04:36 Yeah.
04:37 I think it was how well we knew and understood to set aside athletics and be vulnerable with
04:46 each other as humans.
04:48 But I also think the pandemic gave us that option to do so because we weren't embedded
04:53 in our craft.
04:54 Um, so I think we just saw each other for who we were, but it was also kind of the same
05:00 thing, like a feeling we had, like whenever I first met him, we had, um, a game night
05:05 and just a little, like a glass of wine and it just, it just felt right.
05:10 We both vibed, we both understood each other.
05:12 And it was like, it was just really nice.
05:15 And his dog, whenever, as soon as I walked in, he just peed everywhere and he doesn't
05:20 do that.
05:21 But I think his dog even knew too.
05:23 And his dog just like, just started peeing everywhere.
05:26 He was so excited when he met me.
05:29 Um, so I just think we knew you just keep leveling up, huh?
05:33 You just can't help it.
05:34 You can't help it.
05:35 I guess so.
05:36 I mean, I think we're trying to make an impact for the younger generation.
05:40 So I feel like that's exciting.
05:42 Yeah, it's super exciting.
05:43 Tell me, tell me how this came to be right.
05:46 And the focus on skewing even a little younger, right with Atleta and this line.
05:51 I love the fact that you have said there's a, there's a group that we want to, we want
05:57 to affect as a group that we want to encourage and we can do it literally in the clothing.
06:02 Yes.
06:03 So for, for me, whenever I partnered with Atleta, obviously one of my biggest dreams
06:08 was to have my own collection.
06:11 We weren't sure which capacity that would be at, but then we were like, you know, you
06:15 guys have Atleta girls, let's target the younger generation because I think they need that
06:20 extra inspiration, that extra, that extra person to believe in them.
06:25 And so that's why in this collection, we've incorporated little love notes, which are
06:29 mantras that I've used that have helped me throughout my career, just as a daily reminder.
06:34 If they're ever feeling like they can't do something or they're having a down day, look
06:38 down where that daily mantra is on whatever article of clothing that you're wearing, find
06:43 that and find that inspiration.
06:45 So it's the little Simone on your shoulder.
06:47 And I think that's super exciting and I think it's super unique and that's how we're hopefully
06:53 going to touch those girls.
06:54 I love it.
06:55 It's, it is, it is beautiful.
06:58 The fact that baked into woven into directly in the garment itself, there are these messages
07:05 of love and the reminders that like you are worthy.
07:09 Tell me some of the affirmations that you included, some of the things that helped you
07:13 get through the hard parts in your life.
07:15 Yes.
07:16 So the main one, which I think is everybody's favorite is because I can, and I think kids
07:22 need to kind of believe in themselves a little bit more.
07:27 So that's one of the daily reminders.
07:28 We also have the floor is yours because at the end of the day, it is yours.
07:31 You go out there, you make a statement, you be yourself, you be vulnerable, you be courageous.
07:36 And the other one is just a daily reminder that no dream is too small or too big.
07:41 So you can achieve whatever you put your mind to.
07:55 (upbeat music)
