LiverpoolWorld's Will Rooney and LondonWorld's Rahman Osman give their post-match verdict
Transcript
00:00 Full-time here at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool's opening fixture of the 2023/24 season and ended a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
00:06 Amir with Rahman Ospun, who's our correspondence for London Wales, our sister title.
00:12 Pretty entertaining for a 1-1 draw, would you say Rahman?
00:16 Two goals cancelled out, Chelsea were probably the better side but overall maybe a point a piece was a fair result.
00:24 Yeah, it was. And even if you're a pro Chelsea, you'll see in the end Chelsea would feel a bit let down that they couldn't get three points.
00:33 That Michailo Modric ran through at the last minute, should have finished it.
00:39 But there was a time Liverpool were on top, especially the first 20 minutes.
00:42 Mo Salah's goal was a touching goal. In other times that could have been given.
00:47 And there was a time where Levi Cole just couldn't leave with Salah.
00:50 I don't know what Pochettino did in the dressing room, but in the second half it was all Chelsea.
00:57 And they also did get away with that. Liverpool did get away with that Ben Chilwell goal that was called for an offside.
01:08 In the end, so many talking points. But one thing is clear, both teams do need a holding midfielder.
01:14 Yeah, definitely. I mean, Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool and then Mo Salah, you say, had that goal cancelled out.
01:20 That seemed to spark Chelsea, didn't it? For their rallying cry.
01:24 But as you say, you mentioned both teams need a defensive midfielder.
01:27 Obviously both clubs have been locked in battles for both Brighton's Moses Casedo and Southampton's Romeo Lavia.
01:34 Both managers spoke at the pre-match press conference.
01:36 Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea boss, said that he still wants players in.
01:40 He didn't comment on any players like he did at his pre-match press conference.
01:45 And Jürgen Klopp said that he would comment on it. Everybody said that usually what Chelsea want, they get.
01:51 So maybe that hints that Casedo and Lavia are both coming to Stamford Bridge.
01:56 If you had to predict, Rahman, what's going to happen with those two, would you say that Casedo is looking the more likely and Lavia maybe is more all to play for?
02:03 Mate, Chelsea have been following Casedo for three months and wouldn't pay £100 million.
02:08 And then Liverpool come from nowhere and offer to pay more than £100 million in an auction bid.
02:14 That's one of the best you've ever seen in Premier League history.
02:17 And I've never seen a transfer like this.
02:19 A player clearly saying, "I want to join this A club."
02:25 Despite his club agreeing terms with another club.
02:28 I don't know how it will end. I don't know where Casedo is.
02:32 But it's interesting. Chelsea firmly think they will do it.
02:36 Yesterday a fan saw Baghdad Iqbali here and he asked him about the deal.
02:41 He said, "We're still working."
02:44 Sources say that Liverpool, as of today, still have that agreement.
02:48 And Chelsea's feeling was that because the player said he wanted to join Chelsea, they might be expecting that Liverpool walk away.
02:56 Liverpool haven't walked away from the deal.
02:58 And it's interesting. Let's see what the next 48 hours will say.
03:02 I think it's going to be an interesting time.
03:04 Liverpool principal owner John Henry was here watching on.
03:07 Chelsea's on the top. I'm sure in the Stamford Bridge Boards room it might have been a tense atmosphere.
03:13 That's to say they exchanged a few hellos.
03:18 But they didn't want to be giving too much away.
03:20 Premier League Liverpool end the first game of the season 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
03:25 Thanks very much for watching us.
