Ross Taylor is drawing on some fond memories in Colombo as New Zealand prepare for Thursday’s second Test against Sri Lanka. The Blackcaps faced the same scenario in 2012 after losing the opening Test in Galle and rebounded to upset the hosts and level the series 1-1. Taylor scored 142 and 74 and was named player of the match as he lead his side to a memorable 167 run victory. (Video: New Zealand Cricket)

00:00 lost but you all were in the game throughout the match. Just talk us through about it.
00:04 Yeah I mean I think if you told us at the start of the day, at the start of the game
00:08 that we had to, we had a 260 run lead, I think we definitely would have taken it but you
00:13 know the way they were opening us, batted in that second innings, took the game away
00:16 from us and we were playing catch up from there but you know it's obviously disappointing
00:20 to start the Test Championship like that and obviously the series but you know PSARA is
00:25 a ground that we've had some success on in the past and hopefully we can replicate that
00:32 from a few years ago.
00:34 Last time New Zealand played here you scored 142, good memories here.
00:40 Yeah I think it's always nice to come back to a ground that you've had some success but
00:43 at the same time it's a different game and different set of circumstances but yeah obviously
00:49 being 1-0 down in the series we need to, you know hopefully we can get our first win in
00:54 the Test Championship but you know there's a lot of hard work and I'm sure Sri Lanka
00:59 will try their best obviously to stop us.
01:01 In goal we saw you had a clear plan of attacking the young left arm spinner Lassit Tambuldenia,
01:07 what was the thought process behind it?
01:10 No I think we're just trying to assess the wicket and you know both Sri Lanka spin us
01:13 ball very slowly and give it a bit of a tweak so you know everyone's got different game
01:18 plans and sometimes it's about just trying to put them under some pressure or just trying
01:23 to find areas to score and you know that was my game plan there and I'm sure we'll just
01:29 have to wait and see what the wicket is like here and play accordingly.
01:33 One more thing Ross, how's the team mentality after that game?
01:37 I mean we know how New Zealand are and how much they want to come back and win this game
01:43 so how's the team mentality coming into this game?
01:46 Yeah I mean obviously very disappointed to lose the game but you know we tried everything
01:51 and just weren't good enough but you know it's a new game in a few days time and you
01:56 know I'm sure we've been in this situation many times, been one nil down and come back
02:00 and played strong and that's all we can ask for is to come back, show that fighting spirit
02:05 that this team is renowned for and hopefully we can put this very good Sri Lankan side
02:09 under some pressure.
