00:02 - Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:19 My name is Jacob Pannins.
00:20 I'm a reporter for Sussex World.
00:22 And I'm gonna be speaking with sports reporter,
00:24 Frankie Elliott, about Brighton-Hove Albion's
00:26 first game of the season against Luton.
00:28 But first, here are your top stories from across the county.
00:31 The family of an Eastbourne artist who died
00:38 after a collision with a car in the town
00:40 has paid tribute to a true gent, according to police.
00:44 Police said Andy Forrest, 75, died
00:47 after he was in a collision with a car
00:48 which failed to stop as he used a zebra crossing
00:50 in Upton Road at around 7.50 p.m. on July 26th.
00:55 Officers explained that an investigation was launched
00:58 and six men, aged between 24 and 27,
01:01 were arrested on suspicion of offenses,
01:03 including causing death by dangerous driving,
01:06 conspiring to pervert the course of justice,
01:08 and assisting an offender.
01:09 They've all been released on bail
01:11 while inquiries continue, according to police.
01:14 Mr. Forrest's family said he was an accomplished artist,
01:16 musician, and published author
01:18 with a wide circle of friends in the Eastbourne community.
01:21 Police said their investigation is ongoing.
01:24 The fire service has revealed that they believe
01:25 a major fire that broke out in Hastings Town Centre
01:28 on Thursday, August 10th, was accidental.
01:31 East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said
01:33 crews were called to Waterworks Road just before 12.40 p.m.
01:37 and firefighters from Hastings, Bexhill, Rye, and Eastbourne
01:41 attended the industrial building.
01:43 Residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed
01:46 and to avoid the area.
01:47 Police in Eastbourne are urging business owners
01:49 to check their security following a number of burglaries
01:52 in the town over the past week.
01:54 Owners have been asked to identify areas
01:56 that may be vulnerable to forced entry,
01:58 to check doors and windows are closed,
02:00 and alarms are set before closing and leaving their site.
02:04 The historic town of Rye in East Sussex has been voted
02:07 as one of the most peaceful places in the UK
02:09 to live or visit.
02:11 The medieval town, known for its quaint cobbled streets
02:13 and charming shops, was placed at number seven
02:16 in the top 10 list of the most peaceful towns
02:19 in a survey commissioned by Ice Headshop.
02:22 An index was created by compiling a seed list
02:24 of peaceful locations while looking at variables
02:27 including crime rates, Instagram hashtags,
02:30 population, and peaceful outdoor activities.
02:33 Airborne returns to the Sussex coast this weekend.
02:37 The famous free air show starts on Thursday, August 17th
02:40 and runs until Sunday, August 20th.
02:43 The world famous Red Arrows will be performing
02:45 on all four days and hundreds of thousands of visitors
02:48 are expected to attend the event on Eastbourne's seafront.
02:52 Make sure you tune in next week as we will have footage
02:54 and interviews from the famous event.
02:56 Now let's hear from sports reporter Frankie Elliott
02:58 as he brings us all the latest from Brighton and Hove Albion.
03:01 (upbeat music)
03:04 So I've got sports reporter Frankie Elliott with me here
03:08 and we're gonna be talking a bit more about the latest news
03:11 from Brighton and Hove Albion.
03:12 So there's been a major development
03:13 with a huge transfer, Frankie.
03:16 - Yes, finally.
03:17 Moises Caicedo, Brighton's midfielder, talisman,
03:20 and best player for the last 18 months
03:23 at the Amex Stadium has finally left the club
03:26 in a British record transfer fee as well.
03:29 So it's a huge story for Brighton
03:32 and for British football overall.
03:35 So 100 million pounds is what Chelsea have spent
03:38 as an initial fee in bringing Caicedo into the club.
03:40 And then on top of that, an additional 15 million pounds
03:43 that will be spread over the next couple of years
03:45 being paid to the Albion.
03:47 So 115 million pounds overall.
03:49 That is now the British transfer record
03:51 which was previously held by Chelsea.
03:54 They broke it earlier this year in January
03:56 when they bought Enzo Fernandez for 106 million pounds.
04:00 So twice in one year, Chelsea have broken
04:02 the transfer record.
04:03 They've brought in Caicedo now on an eight year deal.
04:06 So he will be at the club until 2031
04:09 and he has now officially left Brighton.
04:12 So it's taken a while.
04:14 This story has been gathering pace
04:16 for almost two, maybe three months.
04:19 I mean, we first heard of Caicedo's desire
04:21 to leave Brighton back in January,
04:23 but this pursuit of him has finally ended
04:26 and Chelsea have got their man.
04:28 - And how do you see this with the board?
04:30 Do you think the board will be happy
04:31 to see that money coming in
04:32 or disappointed to see Caicedo leaving?
04:35 - Oh, they'll be delighted.
04:36 I mean, when they first were considering
04:40 having to let Caicedo go back in January,
04:42 as I said, when it was first spoken
04:44 about him leaving the club,
04:45 they would never have imagined
04:47 that they would be getting a record fee for him.
04:50 Just to put it into perspective,
04:51 the Amex Stadium, the cost of building that
04:53 and getting that up and running,
04:55 that was around about 150 to 200 million pounds overall.
04:58 So they've almost made that money back
05:00 just by selling one player,
05:01 let alone all the other sales of players
05:03 that we know about from previous years.
05:06 But they'll also be disappointed in some respects
05:08 to be losing one of the best players in the Premier League,
05:11 not only just in Brighton's club.
05:14 But when they look back on this now,
05:16 they'll see the fact they've got 115 million pounds
05:19 for this player who is yet to play
05:21 more than 100 career games.
05:24 They'll be laughing with that, I have to say.
05:26 - And what do you think about the fans?
05:27 Do you think they'll be quite disappointed to see him go
05:29 or think that's a fair enough price
05:31 and we can probably reinvest that better?
05:33 - I think they'll be feeling the same thing.
05:34 Again, there is that disappointment, of course.
05:36 You are losing one of your most important players
05:39 and one of the players that got you into the position
05:42 which Brighton are in now,
05:43 which is achieving things
05:44 that they never probably wished they,
05:46 never thought they could achieve, sorry.
05:48 But then they will see the fact
05:50 that the club has got over 100 million pounds
05:52 for this player.
05:53 And over the course of the last 10 years,
05:56 Brighton have found it very difficult
05:57 to accumulate more than 100 million pounds
06:01 in that whole entire span of selling numbers of players.
06:04 But now with one player,
06:05 they've got 100 million pounds
06:06 to reinvest back into the club.
06:08 And we know that Brighton are very good at investing there
06:11 and spending wisely on their playing squad
06:13 and getting players in on good deals for little money.
06:17 So they'll be able to use that money wisely
06:19 to reinvest into the squad in a number of different areas.
06:23 So I think Brighton fans have got a lot to look forward to
06:25 in a lot of respects
06:26 because of the fee that they've got for Kayseri.
06:29 - And obviously one of the positives
06:31 with the transfer rumbling on for so long
06:32 is it gives the club a chance to find a replacement.
06:35 It looks like Brighton have already identified their man.
06:38 - Yeah, I think that was one of the benefits
06:39 of this deal taking so long to come into fruition
06:43 was that Brighton had a lot of time to prepare.
06:46 And I think from what we've heard,
06:47 obviously Kayseri was sold late on Sunday night
06:51 after the first round of Premier League fixtures
06:54 had finished.
06:55 And already at the start of the week,
06:58 Carlos Belba, the Lille 19-year-old Cameroonian
07:02 who has been one of the most exciting players
07:05 in French foot from the last year or so
07:07 as central defensive mid,
07:08 he's been linked already with a move to Brighton
07:11 and they're hoping to complete that deal pretty quickly.
07:13 They've submitted a bid for around 16 million pounds.
07:17 They've already agreed personal terms
07:18 with the young midfielder
07:20 and they're hoping to get in a replacement ASAP.
07:23 So I feel that Brighton,
07:24 we know how well prepared they are for setbacks.
07:27 Obviously they've had many in the last couple of years
07:29 with players and obviously head coaches leaving,
07:32 but they've had a long time now
07:34 to prepare for Kayseri leaving.
07:36 And it looks like they've already got
07:38 somebody lined up to replace him.
07:39 So it seems as business as usual for the Albion.
07:42 - And obviously spending that money,
07:44 if it is accepted straight away,
07:45 they're still going to have around a hundred million pounds
07:48 left in the bank just from the Kayseri transfer alone.
07:51 How do you see them reinvesting that
07:53 over the coming windows?
07:54 - Well, I think judging by how Brighton
07:57 have progressed year on year,
07:59 they won't see one season in the Europa League
08:02 or finishing in the top six as almost good enough.
08:04 Now I feel they want to be competing
08:07 within that top six, top seven,
08:09 pretty much every season,
08:10 especially when they've got Roberto De Zerbi
08:12 in their ranks, one of the best managers
08:13 are currently going in European football.
08:15 As long as they have him,
08:16 he will have high ambitions and high targets.
08:18 So they will look at taking that money
08:20 and investing it year on year.
08:22 I think we won't see them spending, you know,
08:25 30 to 40 million on one player, say in January,
08:27 or even in the rest of this summer window,
08:29 they'll be looking to spread that money across
08:31 over say the next two, three transfer windows,
08:34 maybe even four,
08:35 because they want to see Brighton competing
08:37 at the high end of the table for this season
08:40 and doing well in the Europa League,
08:42 as well as the FA Cup and League Cup.
08:44 And then once this season ends,
08:46 but this time next year,
08:48 I'm sure they want to spend money again
08:49 on investing into the squad and improving it even further,
08:52 maybe even trying to compete
08:54 in qualifying for the Champions League.
08:56 So it's not simply a case,
08:57 and it never has been a case with Brighton
08:59 of a player is sold for X amount of money
09:01 and that money just goes straight into a new player.
09:03 It's always spread evenly across the,
09:07 you know, the rest of the playing squad,
09:08 very effectively as well.
09:10 And I'm sure they'll do that again
09:11 with a much larger sum of money now.
09:13 - And once they bring in the replacement for Caicedo,
09:16 do you see them making any more transfers this window,
09:18 or do you think they'll take their foot off the pedal
09:20 and wait until January?
09:22 - I think we'll see one more player arrive.
09:25 This Carlos Belva looks like he may be
09:27 their last acquisition.
09:28 Mohamed Kudus, the Ajax midfielder,
09:32 was another player they were heavily linked with,
09:33 but personal terms could never quite be agreed.
09:36 So it seems to me that the midfielder area,
09:38 they just want to sign one more player in that position.
09:41 I think they've got their man now.
09:42 I think they'll be happy with the size of the playing squad.
09:45 I can't see many other dealings being done
09:47 for the rest of this season,
09:48 because I feel that De Zerb is happy with his squad
09:51 and they've picked up where they left off anyway.
09:53 So I feel that, you know,
09:54 he'll be happy to see one more player through the door
09:56 and that will be it.
09:58 - And obviously with Caicedo and McAllister both leaving,
10:00 it completely changes the way Brighton look
10:02 in midfield at the moment.
10:04 But luckily we were able to see how Brighton could operate
10:06 without those two players against Luton on Saturday.
10:08 And that's something that we'll talk about in part two
10:11 about how they dealt with Luton,
10:13 a team newly promoted to the Premier League
10:14 and how the new look Brighton looked.
10:16 So make sure you tune into part two
10:18 as we discuss more about all that we've seen from the Seagulls.
10:21 Welcome back to part two of latest TV news.
10:31 I've got sports reporter, Frankie Elliott with me,
10:34 and we're going to be talking
10:35 about Brighton's first game of the season against Luton.
10:37 What did you make of that result and performance?
10:40 - Oh, well, it was business as usual, almost for Brighton,
10:42 you know, picking up from where they left off last season.
10:44 I think there's a lot of question marks going
10:47 into the season in regards to how Brighton would play,
10:50 obviously coming off the back of their best ever season
10:53 as a football club and losing two
10:54 of their best ever players in Alexis McAllister
10:57 and Moises Caicedo.
10:58 How could they cope?
10:59 How could they manage?
11:00 And they answered those questions by saying very,
11:03 very easily, very effectively.
11:05 Four goals scored, which is always a great return.
11:08 A goal conceded, but from the penalty spot.
11:11 So, you know, almost nearly there
11:13 with a clean sheet as well.
11:15 They, you know, they dealt with what could have been
11:17 a very tricky first game against a side that were,
11:20 you know, wanting to prove themselves in the Premier League
11:21 for the first time in 30 years.
11:23 And they brushed them aside
11:24 with quite a bit of ease as well.
11:26 So, yeah, it was job done for Roberto de Zerbi
11:29 and it showed that they, you know,
11:31 they mean business this year, Brighton.
11:33 - And although Caicedo hadn't technically been sold
11:35 by this point, he wasn't in the matchday squad,
11:37 obviously McAllister's not around.
11:38 A new look midfield for Brighton.
11:40 How did they deal with that, you know,
11:42 new set up in the middle?
11:43 - Well, they had, they still played the 4-2-3-1 formation.
11:48 So they still used the two central defensive midfielders.
11:52 This time they used Pascal Gros,
11:53 Brighton's longstanding versatility man.
11:57 He was played centre mid for a lot of last season as well.
12:01 When, you know, a lot of players had to be moved around
12:03 due to injury and such forth.
12:05 He came into that role again on Saturday,
12:08 did it brilliantly.
12:09 And he was teamed alongside Brighton's new signing,
12:11 Mo Dahoud, the young, sorry, the German midfielder
12:14 who came in from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
12:16 And he looked to slot in really, really effectively
12:19 into the Brighton team.
12:20 He's a very silky player, very technically proficient.
12:23 He'd shown that many a time
12:25 when he'd been playing in Germany.
12:27 And under de Zerby's heavy possession-based style of football,
12:32 he seemed to take to it like a duck to water.
12:34 So that was a great addition alongside one of Brighton's,
12:37 you know, most trustworthy players.
12:39 They really helped keep Brighton ticking
12:41 and helped keep Roberto de Zerby play the style of football
12:44 that he wanted to play without his two most,
12:47 well, his two best players from last season.
12:49 - And obviously alongside Dahoud,
12:51 James Milner, Adrian Adringer,
12:53 and Hal Pedro made their competitive debuts for Brighton,
12:57 what did you make of their performances?
12:58 - Yeah, it was, well, James Milner,
13:00 we always know what we're gonna get with him.
13:01 It was playing it right back,
13:03 which has now become his more preferred position
13:05 later on in his career.
13:07 He looked effortlessly brilliant as he always does.
13:10 He's always reliable,
13:11 always seems to be miraculously fit
13:13 for someone who's 38 getting up and down with a lot of ease.
13:16 And Adringer as well,
13:18 it was great to see him come on in the second half.
13:20 I think he's gonna be a really important player
13:22 for Brighton this season,
13:23 because with the new rule changes
13:26 of more minutes being played at the end
13:28 of both the first half and second half,
13:30 when he comes on in the game in the last 15, 20 minutes,
13:33 like he did against Luton,
13:35 he has a real opportunity to capitalise
13:36 and take advantage of some tied defences
13:38 for an extended period of time that he'll be on the pitch.
13:41 And we saw that on Saturday
13:43 when he managed to grab himself a goal.
13:44 So it's good to see him hit the ground running
13:46 after his lone spell away last year.
13:49 And then Jal Pedro, a very, very exciting player
13:52 to have in that Brighton team.
13:54 I'm sure fans are very excited to see him
13:57 playing this season.
13:58 He worked really well with Danny Welbeck.
13:59 The combinations between them two seem to be effortless.
14:03 He gave them a new sort of dynamic in attack,
14:05 playing as a number 10.
14:05 He was a bit more athletic and a bit more tricky
14:08 than say McAllister was in that position last year,
14:11 or someone like Adam Lallana,
14:12 who's obviously a lot quicker than him.
14:14 So he gives them a new edge to that attack,
14:16 which helped them create a lot more chances
14:18 than we were used to seeing from Albion last season.
14:21 He grabbed himself a goal as well from the penalty spot,
14:23 a very well-deserved goal.
14:25 So I think there's more to come from the young Brazilian.
14:28 - And what did you make of Luton Town,
14:30 obviously playing their first game in the Premier League?
14:32 - Yeah, I mean, obviously the result doesn't look great.
14:35 A 4-1 defeat, that looks like you've been hammered.
14:38 And there's no shame in losing 4-1 to Brighton nowadays,
14:41 because especially at the Amex Stadium,
14:42 they're one of the best teams in England.
14:44 So I don't think they should be too disgruntled by that.
14:47 I think what they've got to see is the fact
14:49 that a lot of these players
14:50 that started for them on Saturday,
14:51 that was their first ever game of top flight football.
14:54 A lot of them have experienced a lot of championship football,
14:56 but most of them have played a lot of League One football.
14:58 So it's a big step up.
15:00 But they've got to see it from a positive side
15:02 that they were 2-1 down with five minutes to go.
15:05 Obviously they got a goal with 10 minutes to go
15:06 to make it 2-1, but they were only a goal behind
15:08 with five minutes to go.
15:09 So they were in the game, very much in the game.
15:11 They were set up well, their shape was very, very good.
15:14 I could see how they'd got to being promoted
15:17 to the Premier League with the squad they had
15:18 because of their shape and organisation
15:21 and a clear plan to get the ball up directly
15:24 to the two attackers as quickly as possible.
15:27 However, they just lacked that little bit of quality
15:28 and composure, which cost them
15:30 at least two of their goals on Saturday.
15:34 And I think some tired legs for the first game of the season
15:37 and the intensity that Brighton play at
15:38 meant that they just managed to get away from the end.
15:40 And that's why the scorelines looked so damning
15:43 and probably a little bit harsh on Dutton.
15:44 They were very much in the game
15:46 for most of that 90 minutes.
15:49 So it'll be disappointing for them
15:51 and it may be a bit of a harsh reality
15:53 to the brutality and the high level of quality
15:55 in the Premier League,
15:56 but they'll have to take away from it
15:58 that they were in the game for most of that fixture.
16:01 And if they look at it from the perspective
16:02 that Brighton are one of the best teams
16:03 they'll play this season,
16:04 they'll look at other fixtures coming up
16:06 against lesser teams and think they've got a chance
16:08 of picking up some wins.
16:09 - And looking forward, Brighton have got Wolves away
16:12 on Saturday.
16:12 How do you see that game playing out?
16:14 - Well, it's another game
16:15 that Brighton will fave themselves for.
16:17 Obviously Wolves have had a very, very difficult summer.
16:20 No money has been spent on any players.
16:23 They've lost their,
16:24 what I feel is their world-class manager
16:26 in Julian Lopetenghi.
16:28 So they've lost their star striker in Raul Jimenez
16:31 and also their star centre mid in Ruben Neves.
16:33 So a lot of outgoings, not a lot of incomings,
16:36 and a lot of worry around Wolverhampton Wanderers
16:39 at the moment, especially their fan base
16:41 are very concerned about keeping their Premier League status
16:43 for this year.
16:44 However, their first game of the season
16:46 against Manchester United at Old Trafford,
16:48 they played very, very well.
16:49 They were very unlucky not to come away with a point.
16:52 They should have come away with the victory.
16:53 Obviously that controversial penalty
16:56 that wasn't given for them in the last 10 minutes,
16:58 they definitely deserve to be given that.
17:00 And if they put the ball in the back of the net,
17:02 they would have easily come away with the victory,
17:04 but they didn't come away with the victory.
17:06 And so Brighton will be going into that game
17:07 still as clear favourites.
17:08 It's away from home, it's at Molineux,
17:10 which is obviously going to be more of a tricky tie
17:13 for Brighton than if they were playing at the Amex.
17:17 But they will also be, I would say,
17:20 the difference between the two sides at the moment
17:21 is that Brighton are finding the net
17:23 very with ease at the moment.
17:24 They scored four on Saturday and last season,
17:27 especially towards the second half of the season,
17:28 Roberto Deserbi really managed to get them ticking
17:31 in the forwards lines and goals seem to come
17:33 quite effortlessly at times.
17:35 Whereas Wolves, very well set up,
17:36 new manager Gary O'Neill knows how to organise
17:38 his teams defensively.
17:40 They won't be giving many chances away,
17:42 but it's that ability to score goals,
17:44 which really hinders them.
17:45 And it hindered them on Monday against Manchester United.
17:48 And I feel it will hinder them against Brighton on Saturday.
17:50 - Yeah, we definitely noticed that, didn't we?
17:53 At Old Trafford, Wolves were creating quite a few chances,
17:56 you know, couldn't you hit the post?
17:57 And, you know, they could have had two or three
17:58 on another night and, you know, that kind of lack of,
18:03 I don't know, that lack of instinct in front of goal
18:05 to get those, you know, to score for your team
18:07 is something that Brighton fans are too used to
18:10 over the last few seasons,
18:11 that being clinical in front of goal.
18:13 - Absolutely.
18:14 I mean, Brighton, yeah, you know,
18:15 let's not forget before Roberto De Zerbi was appointed,
18:18 that was, you know, Albion's main concern
18:20 was they used to create a lot of chances.
18:21 They used to play very, very well under Graham Potter,
18:24 but can never really find the back of the net.
18:25 And at the end of the day,
18:26 if you don't find the back of the net,
18:28 you can't win games of football.
18:29 And so Wolves are very much in that situation now.
18:32 They have been, so they have a side that's very,
18:34 like I say, very well organised.
18:36 They have a very strong midfield
18:37 and lots of willing runners in,
18:39 on the wide areas and up front.
18:41 They played very, very well, but didn't score a goal.
18:44 And they're coming up against the Brighton side,
18:45 like I said, who have managed to really
18:48 get themselves ticking in that sense under Roberto De Zerbi.
18:50 They're creating a lot of better chances,
18:52 better quality chances and taking them as well.
18:55 So if, you know, Wolves don't, you know,
18:57 get ahead in that game or don't have a good start
18:59 and Brighton managed to get that first goal,
19:02 you'd feel that Brighton will go on
19:03 to win that game quite comfortably.
19:05 - And if you were De Zerbi,
19:06 would you be making any changes for the Wolves game?
19:09 - I wouldn't see so.
19:10 I mean, these first couple of games,
19:12 they've got a week's break in between them.
19:15 They played very, very well on Saturday
19:17 and I'm a true believer that if you're,
19:20 if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
19:21 And right now at Brighton, it is, you know,
19:23 it's very much working efficiently.
19:25 So I wouldn't see any changes from Roberto De Zerbi
19:28 for this Saturday.
19:29 - And what would you say for a score prediction
19:31 for the Wolves game?
19:33 - Well, I still, like I said,
19:34 I still feel Wolves are not clinical in front of goal.
19:37 I don't think that's gonna change against Brighton.
19:39 So I'm gonna go for a two nil Brighton win.
19:41 - Yeah, I think I'd go for the same.
