00:37 and I'm gonna be speaking with sports reporter Sam Pohl
00:40 about Brighton's 2-1 loss at Manchester City.
00:43 But first, here are your top stories from across the county.
00:46 A good Samaritan was assaulted by a man
00:49 she tried to help in East Sussex, police have said.
00:52 Sussex police are investigating the assault
00:54 on a woman in Kenilworth Road, St. Leonard's,
00:56 which happened at around 7 p.m. on Friday, October the 20th.
01:00 Police said a man was heard shouting
01:01 and a woman approached him to check he was okay
01:04 and agreed to ask her neighbor
01:05 if he could use their bathroom
01:06 and give him a glass of water.
01:08 Once he had used the bathroom,
01:09 he followed the woman and assaulted her
01:11 before making off towards the seafront, officers added.
01:14 Police said the suspect is white, six foot tall,
01:17 aged between 30 and 40, thin,
01:19 and his front bottom teeth are missing.
01:21 He was also wearing dark-colored jeans and a baseball cap
01:24 and was carrying a brown backpack, police added.
01:27 Detectives are appealing for anyone
01:29 who may have video footage
01:30 which could help identify the suspect to come forward.
01:33 A Sussex town has been labeled as the place
01:36 with the most charity shops in the UK.
01:38 Eastbourne has been described
01:39 as a haven for discount shoppers by ukphonebook.com,
01:43 with the majority of charity shops
01:45 in the BN21 postcode area
01:47 being located along Terminus Road
01:49 as well as the nearby Grove Road.
01:51 Robin Osterley, who is the chief executive
01:53 of the Charity Retail Association,
01:55 said charity shops play a vital role
01:57 in attracting footfall to local high streets
01:59 such as Eastbourne's.
02:00 Hailsham Bonfire Society's Guy Fawkes
02:04 and Festival of Fire celebrations took place on Saturday.
02:07 The event was in Hailsham Recreation Ground
02:09 and the town centre from 7.30pm to 10pm
02:12 and was the town's 418th Guy Fawkes celebration.
02:16 Thousands of runners also took on
02:18 the Beachy Head Marathon at the weekend.
02:20 The marathon was on Saturday along with the Ultra Marathon,
02:23 which saw runners take on the traditional marathon route
02:26 followed by a 10K run
02:27 with a total distance of approximately 52.6km.

02:38 as he gives us an insight
02:39 into Brighton's loss against the champions.
02:41 I've got sports reporter Sam Pohl with me here
02:47 and we're going to be talking a bit more
02:48 about Brighton's loss on the weekend against Manchester City.
02:51 So Sam, what did you make of that performance?
02:54 - I would say it's the old cliche,
02:56 kind of game of two halves.
02:57 The first half, the champions came out completely
03:01 out-thought, out-fought.
03:03 The City goal was really their goal.
03:06 After seven minutes by Alvarez,
03:07 kind of put Brighton on the back foot.
03:10 And then obviously getting the second, Haaland,
03:13 it kind of led them to dominate the game more and more.
03:17 They just dominated possession.
03:19 Brighton didn't really have a sniff that entire first half.
03:21 But then something must have clicked,
03:23 Zerby must have said something during the halftime break
03:25 because second half, they were a completely different side.
03:27 I think the changes as well definitely helped.
03:30 Fatih coming on definitely made the difference.
03:32 And the goal he scored as well was very well taken.
03:36 And they looked at the end,
03:37 they looked like they were going to snatch a point,
03:39 which against the current champions
03:41 would have been an excellent result.
03:43 But yeah, you can't really say it's a bad result
03:46 against obviously the team that won the treble last year.
03:49 Two ones, quite a respectable result.
03:52 But in the manner of their first half performance,
03:55 you could say it could have been about four or five,
03:57 but the way they caught it back,
03:58 I think it's a pretty decent result for the Seagulls.
04:00 - Yeah, I guess that's the thing,
04:01 despite how good Zerby and Brighton
04:04 might have organised themselves for this game,
04:06 when you're coming up against the current treble winners,
04:09 two one doesn't actually sound that bad,
04:11 although any loss for Brighton this season
04:13 is going to feel pretty disappointing.
04:14 - Absolutely, yeah.
04:15 Especially with the games in Europe as well,
04:18 they're going to try and give a good counter of themselves.
04:21 But yeah, they have the leakiest defence in the Premier League
04:24 so it kind of was put on full display again
04:26 in that first half.
04:28 The goal, as I can see, is what,
04:30 I wouldn't say avoidable,
04:31 but they could definitely have prevented it
04:32 before obviously the danger happened.
04:34 But like you said, it's a respectable result.
04:38 It could have been worse.
04:40 And I think they kind of had one eye
04:42 on this week's European fixtures as well.
04:44 The injuries as well to some key players as well
04:48 definitely didn't help them out.
04:50 But yeah, I think they have this eye
04:51 on this European tie.
04:53 - And you mentioned it, sort of Brighton's goal record,
04:56 you know, they concede a lot of goals,
04:58 especially for a team who are competing
04:59 near the top end of the table.
05:01 Do you see that as a concern?
05:02 'Cause I was talking to obviously Frankie Elliott
05:04 when he was here and he was saying that
05:05 does it just doesn't seem to care about clean sheets
05:07 and that's all right if you're outscoring the opponent,
05:10 but as somebody sort of on the outside looking in,
05:12 would that be a concern if you were a Brighton fan?
05:14 - I wouldn't say, I would say that the defence
05:20 probably was the, despite the result,
05:23 the defence was probably the stand up performance,
05:24 especially in that first half.
05:25 Lewis Dunk, he was the only one that seemed
05:28 to be properly competing against City's defence.
05:31 He seemed to hold Haaland in check
05:33 throughout that first half, despite the goal.
05:35 But against opposition like City,
05:38 you can't really expect anything less
05:41 than them tearing teams.
05:43 We've seen them score six or seven
05:45 against better opposition than Brighton.
05:48 So I suppose you can't really look at that result
05:50 as the marker, but I would say it's kind of concerning
05:55 when you're conceding two or three against teams
05:57 that are below them in the league.
05:58 But no, I wouldn't say it's concerning,
06:02 not against City, not against that result.
06:04 - Yeah, definitely.
06:05 And you've touched on also the injuries.
06:06 What players will Brighton be missing in the-
06:08 - So Soli March was taken off a stretcher.
06:11 It looks like he's gonna be out
06:12 for a significant amount of time,
06:13 which is a key blow for Brighton and the way they play.
06:16 Obviously he's been so integral these,
06:18 for however long he's been there.
06:20 And Welbeck also, he came off with a muscle injury as well.
06:22 He's kind of like the front pressing forward.
06:25 He kind of sets the tone from the front
06:27 and then he'll be a big miss.
06:28 Not as much with like Pedro coming in and that,
06:32 but he's a key loss.
06:33 Obviously you need depth as well,
06:35 as it's Brighton's first season in Europe,
06:37 you need to rotations and all that stuff.
06:39 So he'll be a big miss for the side.
06:42 - 'Cause like you said, obviously that depth
06:43 is gonna be a big concern.
06:44 Brighton had a lot of injuries
06:45 towards the end of last season
06:46 and had to, for example, put Kai Seder at right back
06:49 and stuff like that.
06:49 We know De Zerbi can be adaptable,
06:51 but yeah, that's must be the biggest concern right now
06:53 is that they've got almost twice the amount of fixtures.
06:56 - Absolutely, yeah.
06:56 And I think De Zerbi came out after the game
06:58 and said that there's too many games,
07:00 the injuries are piling up.
07:01 The team, especially of Brighton's financial stature,
07:05 can't compete against the big sides that like City,
07:08 like Chelsea, like United, that they can constantly rotate.
07:11 And these injuries to players like March and Welbeck,
07:14 they will add up,
07:15 they will potentially cost Brighton some points,
07:17 especially in the attacking areas as well.
07:20 It's good that they strengthened though in those areas,
07:23 like Fatih on loan and Pedro this summer.
07:27 But yeah, especially with these European ties,
07:28 it's gonna be tough for Brighton
07:29 to continue to put out these results.
07:31 - And you've just mentioned Fatih,
07:32 you said you were quite impressed
07:33 with his performance against Brighton.
07:34 - Absolutely, when he came on, he made the difference.
07:37 He was quick, he was direct,
07:39 he gave City's full-backs absolute torrid time.
07:42 It's, for a player that's come from Brighton,
07:46 you can, come from Barcelona, sorry,
07:47 you can definitely see that they're kind of like,
07:50 or tiki-taka football.
07:52 He's so quick with his feet, he's quick with his movements,
07:55 he's sharp with his runs.
07:57 And it's so, it's kind of like night and day with March,
08:01 'cause March will look to cut in rather than use his pace.
08:03 I think Fatih was so direct.
08:05 He's such a game changer
08:07 and he makes a world of difference, I think.
08:09 And it'll be interesting to see
08:11 if he starts against Ajax during the week,
08:14 how much of a difference he will make.
08:15 - And you also mentioned there was one player
08:16 you weren't too impressed with.
08:18 - No, I don't mean to be harsh on a 37-year-old,
08:22 James Milner, but yeah, he, against Jeremy Doku,
08:25 it was, he lost at sea.
08:29 Doku, they were just,
08:30 City were attacking down that left-hand side,
08:32 Doku was making him look very much a 37-year-old.
08:36 Yeah, all the play was going through,
08:40 but he held his own to the end there.
08:44 Doku didn't score, the crosses that he was putting in,
08:47 he was kind of restricting him to the back post,
08:49 but he was just consistently beating him
08:51 time and time again.
08:52 And I think that was the main weakness for Brighton,
08:57 that game.
08:58 - Yeah, I guess with a player like James Milner,
08:59 it's kind of double-edged sword in the fact that,
09:01 you know, you've got that age and that experience,
09:04 which is so beneficial for a young inexperienced,
09:06 in a side that, you know,
09:07 hasn't got a lot of experience in Europe, for example,
09:09 but then at the same time,
09:10 you've got a 36, 37-year-old's body,
09:12 although he's probably fitter than we are,
09:13 but still, you know, when you're up against a Pirate,
09:15 it's going to be really tough.
09:16 - Absolutely, yeah.
09:17 And I think one of the key things about City
09:19 is the pace and the wings.
09:20 I think James Milner, unfortunately,
09:22 not that he ever had it,
09:23 but I don't think he would have the pace
09:25 to deal with most wingers in the Premier League anymore.
09:28 Yeah, it was very evident with Doku's performance
09:30 that they were targeting that left-hand side,
09:34 trying to get balls into our Rezin Harland.
09:36 But, I mean, he's a professional, he's what we need.
09:39 It's good cover as well,
09:40 because Lamptey's out of the minute as well,
09:42 and it's just another injury.
09:44 So you're kind of being forced to,
09:46 like, you're disturbing his hands,
09:47 being forced to play Milner right back at this point.
09:49 So he didn't make a fool of himself,
09:54 if you know what I mean.
09:55 He put a shift in,
09:56 but that's kind of all you can expect from James Milner.
09:59 You can't expect him to be the outstanding player at 37,
10:02 at a position that he's not really natural at.
10:04 So yeah, well, Brighton are definitely looking forward
10:06 to when Lamptey come back to fill in as a right-back.
10:09 - Yeah, and yeah, looking forward, obviously,
10:10 they got a couple of games,
10:11 and losing 2-1 at Man City,
10:13 I don't think there's any team in the world
10:14 who'd be overly disappointed with losing 2-1 at the Amex,
10:16 but make sure you tune in to part two of latest TV news,

10:21 about Brighton's upcoming Europa League fixture against Ajax,
10:24 as well as their Premier League game

10:41 I've got sports reporter Sam Poll with me here,
10:43 and we're going to be talking about
10:44 Brighton's upcoming Europa League fixture against Ajax,
10:47 as well as their weekend fixture
10:48 in the Premier League against Fulham.
10:50 And we're also going to be looking
10:51 at some of the Sussex sides that are still in the FA Cup,
10:54 as we approach the first round proper.
10:56 So Sam, how do you see the Brighton-Ajax game
10:58 going on Thursday?
11:00 - I can see it's a definitely winnable game for Brighton.
11:03 Ajax, they're in turmoil at the minute.
11:05 They're somewhere around the 17th,
11:07 one point above the relegation zone.
11:09 They've just got rid of their manager at the minute.
11:10 They seem to be a club in free fall,
11:12 not what we would expect from Ajax,
11:14 one of the legends of the Dutch game.
11:16 Yeah, Brighton probably should put them to the sword
11:21 with the way they're doing it.
11:21 I know some injuries are obviously going to hold Brighton back,
11:24 but the way with Ajax are going at the minute,
11:26 yeah, Brighton could score two or three.
11:29 Yeah, the Ajax, their team's been gutted as well,
11:31 not what we would expect from a team
11:34 that's been to a Champions League semi-final.
11:37 Yeah, I can see Brighton, with Brighton at home,
11:40 I can see the crowd at the Amex getting behind the boys
11:43 and just, yeah, it's a game that they need to win as well.
11:47 So that could give the Brighton extra incentive
11:49 to score two or three.
11:50 So I reckon it might be a big result.
11:53 - Yeah, definitely.
11:54 Like you said, Ajax aren't in a great position right now.
11:55 And it's also really important Brighton start
11:57 getting some points on the board as well.
11:59 - Absolutely.
11:59 It's not been the start that Brighton wanted.
12:02 Obviously with a draw and a defeat,
12:05 it's not been the best start,
12:06 but they've got a very winnable game
12:08 coming up against Ajax.
12:09 Not that you would have predicted that before the group,
12:13 but yeah, it's a game that they need to win.
12:15 It's a game that they probably should win
12:18 to keep their European hopes alive.
12:20 - Yeah, definitely.
12:21 And it's going to be a tough one,
12:22 but like you said,
12:23 it looks like Ajax aren't the best at the moment.
12:25 Brighton could score some goals,
12:26 but then like we mentioned in the first half,
12:28 Brighton might also concede a few goals as well.
12:30 - Absolutely.
12:31 I mean, with European fixtures,
12:33 the bright lights, they can shrink a few players.
12:36 Obviously Brighton,
12:37 they've got the leakiest defence in the Premier League.
12:40 They've leaked a few goals so far.
12:41 I think it's five in two games in Europe.
12:45 So with the team like Ajax as well,
12:47 they're obviously an experienced European side.
12:50 They've been going on for tens of years now.
12:53 Yeah, it could be a tricky one for the defence to sort out,
12:58 but I can see Brighton pulling out a victory.
13:00 - Yeah, definitely.
13:01 And obviously following that loss at home
13:02 against Athens, the draw away against Marseille,
13:05 although that will be seen as a positive, still no win,
13:07 but yeah, they're going to need some points
13:08 if they want to progress to the knockouts.
13:10 - Absolutely.
13:10 Yeah, the Brighton, when it was drawn,
13:13 I think Brighton were predicting,
13:14 not necessarily for it to be an easy ride through this group,
13:17 but definitely to pick up some more points,
13:20 especially against AEK Athens.
13:21 You would have thought that would have been
13:22 like the gimme of the group,
13:23 if you know what I mean.
13:25 Obviously it was a tough result, that first game,
13:27 but obviously it's the first ever time in Europe.
13:29 You kind of expect those nerves and jitters going in,
13:31 but as they slowly get more accustomed to midweek football,
13:34 you can kind of see Brighton
13:36 kind of build up that momentum as well.
13:37 De Zerby, I'm sure, will get them prepared
13:39 the way he wants to play
13:40 and hopefully pick up the results
13:42 they need to progress to the knockouts.
13:44 - And obviously then they've got Fulham
13:45 on the weekend at home.
13:47 How do you see that one playing out?
13:48 - I can see Brighton, again,
13:51 it's another tricky fixture for them.
13:54 Fulham are one of those teams that,
13:55 on their day, can beat anyone,
13:57 but I can see Brighton bouncing back, obviously.
14:01 Their defence is still very leaky,
14:03 but Fulham aren't really necessarily known
14:05 for their attacking options.
14:05 I think it's going to be more of a grind it out,
14:08 nil-nil, one-nil.
14:09 I think someone's going to nick a goal somewhere,
14:12 but especially after the city result,
14:14 Brighton will obviously take the positives
14:15 from that second half.
14:16 The way they came back,
14:17 the way they turned it around
14:19 against the treble winners,
14:22 they will take their positives
14:23 and hopefully do it at home as well,
14:25 which again, at home,
14:28 it's going to prove a huge factor for the team,
14:31 with obviously the fans getting behind them.
14:32 And I can see, yeah, one-nil.
14:35 I can't see it being the most glamorous of games,
14:37 but I can see Brighton probably snatching a result.
14:42 - Yeah, definitely.
14:43 I think Brighton will be going into the game
14:44 feeling like their favourites,
14:45 and Brighton, I mean Fulham, sorry,
14:47 would probably be pretty happy with the draw.
14:48 I mean, coming to the Amex is something
14:50 that no team in the league
14:51 is going to be looking forward to this season,
14:53 but I guess Fulham is one of those teams
14:55 you need to be beating
14:56 if you want to be challenging for Europe again.
14:58 - Absolutely.
14:59 I mean, Brighton,
15:00 it's been a kind of up and down season for Brighton so far,
15:03 especially with the fixture congestion with Europe
15:05 and obviously the injuries that are coming in.
15:07 So it's kind of been up and down,
15:09 but for a team like Brighton
15:12 to aspire to be a consistent team in Europe,
15:15 they need to be beating teams like Fulham
15:17 on a regular basis and convincingly as well.
15:19 I think, and with the attacking options
15:21 that Brighton have, obviously,
15:22 with Fatih, Dhingra, Khatoma,
15:26 you would expect them to put on a performance
15:27 against a team that you'd expect Brighton,
15:30 with European aspiration,
15:31 should deal with handily.
15:34 - Yeah, you'd hope so.
15:35 And yeah, it'd be good to get those points on the board
15:37 following that loss.
15:38 And obviously looking forward,
15:39 first round proper of the FA Cup,
15:41 who were the three Sussex teams
15:42 we've got still in the competition?
15:43 - So we've got Horsham,
15:45 we've got Crawley,
15:46 and we've got Worthing going through.
15:48 There's a marquee match up Horsham,
15:51 getting the away tie against Barnsley,
15:53 who are currently third in League One.
15:55 So it should be an excellent day for the fans,
15:56 for the supporters, for the team as well.
15:58 The only question mark is it's on a Friday night,
16:02 which for a non-league team like Horsham,
16:04 kind of is a bit of a death sentence,
16:06 to be honest.
16:07 Obviously with players being part-time as well,
16:09 they're gonna be, I think they're missing
16:10 five or six players from what I'm hearing
16:12 due to work commitments.
16:14 So it's gonna be not Horsham's full strength side
16:17 against a team that was in the Premier League
16:19 not so long ago.
16:20 So you can only hold out hope for a team like Horsham,
16:24 but I have a feeling it might be a bit of a
16:27 one-sided contest to say the least.
16:29 And then you've got Crawley away in Notts County as well.
16:32 Another big fixture,
16:34 I think Crawley have been drawn against
16:36 League Two opposition.
16:37 I think the past three or four rounds of the FA Cup,
16:40 it's gonna be a tough game for them,
16:43 obviously with Crawley struggling as well in the league
16:45 after a defeat against Crewe at the weekend.
16:48 But they'll be looking to continue the cup run,
16:49 obviously in the third round you get bigger opposition.
16:52 So hopefully they'll be sticking around
16:56 and hopefully getting that big tie.
16:57 And then you've obviously got in the third fixture,
16:59 third Sussex team, you've got Worthing at Atherington Town,
17:03 which is in Derbyshire.
17:05 So it's a team that is at their level.
17:08 So they will definitely see it as a winnable fixture.
17:12 I think it's the first time that Worthing got
17:14 into the first round proper since 1999 as well,
17:16 which is an excellent achievement for them.
17:19 And obviously drawing against teams of a similar level
17:22 with them, they haven't,
17:23 unfortunately in Worthing's case,
17:25 unfortunately in Portman's case,
17:26 they haven't been drawn against a team like Barnsley,
17:28 the professional outfit that you would expect
17:30 to turn up on the day and beat them.
17:31 So in Worthing's minds, in their team's minds,
17:34 they can expect, well, in their minds,
17:36 they can expect a result to get through
17:38 to maybe the second round
17:39 and then maybe face a team like Barnsley
17:42 or Portsmouth in the next round.
17:44 And hopefully they get it at home as well
17:45 for that big crowd, that big FA Cup fixture
17:48 that we know we all love.
17:49 - And it's fantastic to see three Sussex teams thriving
17:51 and hopefully they will get through.
17:52 And as a Horsham lad yourself,
17:54 you're going up to Barnsley.
17:55 How excited are you for that?
17:56 - I'm looking forward to it.
17:57 It's a shame it's on a Friday night.
17:59 Yeah, I think it's a quarter to eight kickoff.
18:01 There's going to be a four and a half hour journey
18:03 for me to get there.
18:05 I'm looking forward to it and it should be a great day
18:07 out for the fans.
18:08 Obviously Barnsley, a big club in England,
18:10 should be a great away day.
18:12 I know I took the fortunate or somewhat unfortunate trip
18:15 to Carlisle a couple of years ago.
18:18 And again, that was a great day for the fans.
18:20 Horsham made a great account of themselves in that fixture.
18:23 And I think they'll do it as well again.
18:24 I mean, Horsham, since I've grown up,
18:26 they've had a great success in the FA Cup.
18:29 I mean, I was there when they played Swansea
18:31 in the second round.
18:33 Yeah, it was a great day out for the fans.
18:35 And just hope the Hornets can pull out on the day.
18:38 - Yeah, I guess that's the thing with the FA Cup,
18:39 when you get to these rounds
18:40 and the smaller teams are playing the bigger teams,
18:42 that's what you're relishing all season.
18:44 That's what you're waiting for.
18:45 The league almost doesn't matter.
18:46 And it's so interesting to see
18:47 because fans of non-league clubs can't get enough
18:50 of the FA Cup, but Premier League and Championship teams
18:52 almost kind of throw it to the wayside a little bit.
18:54 - Yeah, absolutely.
18:55 It kind of, people talk about like the magic of the cup
18:59 in a way, but with bigger teams like say United or a Barnsley
19:03 if they was a Horsham Brighton or Crawley Brighton
19:07 or Worthing Brighton even, I mean,
19:09 that'd be a great day out for Sussex.
19:10 Obviously they're playing the Sussex Senior Cup,
19:12 which is kind of the lesser competition.
19:14 They kind of bring out their youth teams,
19:15 but, oh, FA Cup, ITV on the telly at night.
19:18 It'd be brilliant.
19:19 - It'd be fantastic.
19:20 And obviously looking at Brighton and the FA Cup,
19:22 how do you think they're going to try and tackle
19:24 that competition, obviously,
19:25 while also being in the Europa League?
19:27 - Oh, it's going to be a tricky one.
19:29 I think, obviously we spoke about earlier
19:31 about how rotation is going to be key, I think,
19:33 with the team, especially with all the injuries
19:36 that are piling up, obviously.
19:38 They've got the Carabao Cup as well, FA Cup
19:41 and the Premier League to deal with and Europe.
19:44 So it's going to be tough for De Zerbis
19:46 to manage these teams.
19:47 You kind of, it kind of depends on the draw
19:49 because you can kind of, if you get like a lesser opposition,
19:52 like a League Two or a non-league club,
19:54 you can afford to rotate.
19:57 But if they get drawn against one of the big boys
19:59 in the Premier League, I don't know,
20:01 you kind of have to put it as the lesser competition
20:06 in a way because you've got Europe,
20:07 which I think is going to be Brighton's main goal
20:09 this season, and then obviously the Premier League
20:11 to try and get back into Europe this year.
20:14 So yeah, I think rotation is going to be definitely key
20:16 for De Zerbi and his team.
20:18 - But we saw a scene with De Zerbi in the past as well.
20:19 He wants to prioritise every competition.
20:22 I was at the game at Chelsea when they got knocked
20:24 out of the League Cup and he was absolutely devastated.
20:26 - True, yeah.
20:27 It's one of those things, obviously,
20:29 any successful manager wants to win everything they're in.
20:32 I, as a kind of a pessimist and a pragmatist myself,
