00:00 While the current dance alliance has wrapped up their seventh annual books
00:04 in motion program made to improve literacy in our youth through dance
00:07 with more than 30 performances by nine dance groups across the county. 23
00:11 abc's Ava Kirshner is live in studio to introduce us to one of those groups in
00:16 this week's books in motion spotlight. Ava. Yeah, that's right guys. The
00:19 current dance alliance just spent the last month performing in libraries and
00:23 telling stories through their choreography and the group were
00:26 shining a light on this week, kept it classic story wise and dance wise.
00:30 Bakersfield City Ballet is a pre professional ballet company that aims
00:40 to inspire and enrich our community through performances and foster a love
00:44 for the arts through dance. The Bakersfield City Ballet just wrapped up
00:48 their performances of Swan Lake, one of the most famous stories often told
00:52 through ballet. But despite the fact that the story is a classic, the
00:56 dancers still made it new again for books in motion. I think what's really
00:59 special about books in motion is that it's held in a library. So unlike in
01:04 our usual performances, we get to interact with the people and um
01:10 performances aren't really what you'd expect to see in a library. So I think
01:13 that just heightens the excitement in the room and just makes it so much
01:17 better by having dancers perform the books. It takes away the boundary of
01:21 having to read the words and lets the child experience the story. I love
01:26 books in motion because it gives them another way to interact with the book
01:29 instead of just having to read it and it gives them a chance to think about
01:33 it in other ways. The dancers telling me that readjusting one's perspective to
01:37 reading is the key showing that once you get behind the words, you can enjoy
01:42 the real story. I think a lot of people have a personal stigma against reading
01:46 where they think that if you read it will be boring. And so this kind of
01:50 shows that reading isn't boring and reading is so many other things than
01:54 just sitting down and looking at words. There's a whole story to go with the
01:59 words that you're reading. These dancers have been working hard performing
02:02 across Kern County libraries and worked even harder trying to teach me their
02:07 ballerina moves. Sit back and flutter. Yeah. Okay. I have not done ballet in a
02:12 long time actually. Now that I realize it, is that it? Yeah. Okay, cool, cool,
02:17 cool. I can do that.
02:19 Mhm.
02:19 High five. That was pretty good.
02:32 That was a fun one. The Bakersfield City Ballet performed in multiple
02:38 locations here in Kern County and they tell me they look forward to next year's
02:41 books in motion. As for our final spotlight, tune in next week to meet
02:45 the last groups of dancers who have worked so hard to bring the books to
02:48 life. Live in studio. Ava Kirshner, 23 abc News connecting you. Yeah, well she
02:54 was missing with the outfit. Yeah, just for several hats. She does a bit of
02:57 everything. She drinks ballet singing woman of many talents. All right.
